It's matter of attitude. In the UK we used to have two very distinct groups of freshwater anglers. Coarse fishermen and game fishermen. Game and coarse describe the eating quality of the fish not the skill of the anglers. Coarse fish being generally regarded as inedible by the British (in comparison with readily available sea fish) meant 100% catch and release of coarse fish has been the norm for a century. Game fishermen would generally kill anything they caught (probably because they paid a lot of money to catch it.) Then in the 1970s and 80s a lot of coarse fishermen started fly fishing, as stillwater trout fisheries, reservoirs, old gravel pits and ponds stocked with non-indigenous rainbow trout were created all over the UK. Killing everything is moronic when you can catch ten suicidal two pound plus (1 kilo) fish in a day, and more and more catch and release became the norm, usually compulsory over a specified bag limit. Old game anglers started fishing the new fisheries, as sea trout and salmon fishing in particular declined to a waste of time and money, and some new fly anglers started fishing more traditional trout rivers. The catch and release mentality of the coarse anglers spread to the point that, in most of the UK, the kill everything dinosaurs are now pretty much extinct. Killing a big native brown trout or grayling would be about as acceptable as drowning a Labrador puppy.

This is an essential piece of film, that demonstrates clearly how things can be done differently, pioneering and shifting the point of view more and more to what works best for the fish. I'd recommend that anyone interested in our sport view this, take stock and apply some of these ideas locally. Inspired work, harmony with nature becoming more and more a real thing, with science, observation and data backing it all up.

People can say what they will about America, our President, our guns our fat citizens, but I think it is without argument that we have the best model for public land and wildlife conservation. Fun fact; did you know almost all the funding for state and thus local fish and game agencies is raised through the purchase of hunting and fishing licenses, as well as a small tax on firearms and other equipment? Great film 👍 #keepitpublic @NYCook 📷

I agree. I live in UK...and here if you wish to hunt, you must do so on a private estate and pay ridiculous amounts of money to be guided and even walk their land. And as far as fishing goes...£200 day is not uncommon on a river. Hence why they have so many man made lakes here to fish. England is probably why hunting and fishing is considered such a "high class"* sport. It's awfully expensive and reserved for mainly the rich. This why you guys out there in America have a fair, conserving and all involving system. Which in return gets obeyed and respected (mostly). And do fight for your public lands...no other country really has them, they are all privatised and ridiculous.

Great point Zach. Many people are unaware of the "north american model" of fish/wildlife management. The federal taxes through Dingell-Johson (Sportfish Restoration Act) and Pittman Robertson Acts were absolutely CRITICAL to fisheries/wildlife conservation as we know it.

Very well done, and thankful for the English subtitles. I really like the point he makes at 12:50 as well. As an American living in Germany, there are a lot of different rules to follow that are particular in Germany which is one of the reasons I started an English speaking channel about this.

Yes our rules very hard, especially here in my home in Baden Württemberg and Bavaria. Here, most things are generally interpreted much more strictly than in the rest of the country. What is allowed in one state may be prohibited in another.

I'm from Canada and I've done Catch and Release fishing all of my life. I'm going to be moving to Germany this summer and I didn't realize that catch and release was illegal there. One of the things I learned from this video is that fish are really slippery! I'm hoping to be able to volunteer with one of these projects when I get there if there are any nearby to me.

Well done gents and good luck with the project. Maybe more public awareness is needed that CnR isn't necessarily cruelty. And perhaps regulations that cover barbless hooks, long handled landing nets, smaller flies, stronger tippets etc. Not ideal but maybe have to start slowly to get both public image as well as regulations to change.

Excellent video. Thank you for adding to the quality of this interesting debate. My personal feeling is the sea trout anglers should be taking fish between 40 and 50 but not over and it should be capped at 1 or 2 fish per day. To not keep a 45cm sea trout but then kill a 60cm doesn't make good population sense. The bigger sea trout (which are usually female) carry far more eggs than the smaller ones, and as such are more valuable to keeping the population going. If we lived in a world where there was no shortage of fish, I would be happy to not C&R. However the reality is that there are too many angers and not enough fish. I do not agree with stocking unless it's into a barren river/lake where there used to be fish. Stocking where wild fish exist is detrimental to their survival. C&R allows us to have more anglers, so more people have access to fishing and it also teaches care of our fish and wilds. People won;t protect ht they don't know about. So the more people that have an intimate relationship with their local river/lake are more likely to fight to keep it healthy.

Great video. It is a sad situation for you guys. There are plenty here in the UK who want to try to stop fishing. But if it wasn't for the fishing clubs then the rivers in this overpopulated island would be a lot worse than they are now. Managing rivers is the anglers duty.

Mfg

In Finland you must release all natural born trouts in southern part of the country. This has been the case last 2 years since our trout populations have been really weak in many places. All the hatchery born trouts have been cut from the adipose fin.
