Wonderful playing!! The last mouvement is so difficult. He made it sound very easy indeed. I played with him the flute and harp concerto by Mozart in several concerts. The last time was at The Royal Festival hall in London with Yehudy Menuhim conducting. A fantastic expirience for me. Shall always remember it!!

My dad Fritz Henker accompanied J.P.Rampal to the U.S., concert tour, playing with him as German Bach soloist. My dad wrote me in his letter to me . Long time ago. Bach music rocks !

@@@henkerfastwalker, Yesterday was the 20th death anniversary of Jean Pierre Rampal. Very pleasant to listen to such music. I am a great admirer of JS Bach, his sons, and Jean Pierre Rampal. Which instrument did your father play as a soloist?

Incredible performance. The last movement Rampal plays with such fire, his articulation of the 16th note passages are beyond belief. Amazing.

Indeed there is fire. And yet - it still sounds to me as if Jean-Pierre Rampal is stumbling across a great deal of notes, when showing off by playing the final movement as fast as possible. Which unfortunately makes his flute playing in this movement sound frantic and unprecise ... and in certain passages also a bit sloppy. The first two movements are not bad, though. I bought this LP record in the late 1970s, and I loved listening to it back then. But with so many other interesting and different performances of C.P.E Bach's D minor flute concerto being available today, this one is no longer my favorite recording.

This concert was an inspiration to pursue my career as flutist. After all this years I discovered this instrument was meant to me, I feel comfortable with, it's sounds good to me, I think I loved the flute all my life without notice that.

The sons of J.S. Bach exemplify Harold Bloom's "Anxiety of Influence" theory to compelling degrees, even as Johann Christian stood rather further from his father's shadow, by reason of having been born last. That caveat said, this relatively-early work of CPE's is masterly, and masterfully-performed, here. Rarely before or afterwards did CPE integrate the styles living and breathing around him as effectively as he did in this work. Alas!

Thanks for sharing this recording. Gives Rampal a chance to show his mastery of articulation and speed. It's very clean and precise and a good example of the potential of how fast flutists can articulate with ease. I like to warm up on this piece playing it in 8 different keys! Just kidding!

Unfortunately, this performance now sounds very much of its time - dated, and very unlike how the work would performed today. Whilst there is some fine flute playing, the ‘modern’ instruments have smoothed over a lot of CPE’s spiky originality - the work has been turned into something that it is not. The original/authentic instrument versions are more preferable and give a better feel of the true character of the composer and his music, whilst modern orchestras today - if you prefer them - play with much more period performance awareness.
