One of the best traits with Yamaha is they track better allowing you to carry speed. Especially on chop heading up to large jump faces, and with deceleration bumps into turns. Also lean angle bumps coming out of turns. No bike will track like a yz

Pipe, ecu mapping, a mild porting and head work with good fuel will make it just as good as anything on the market in terms of power.. and porting and head work isn't very expensive, exhaust isnt too outrageous if you don't go with titanium or find a dentless used system, just repack the slip on. It turns great but I don't like the suspension, the shock in particular but it can be changed.

Appreciate the honest review. The majority of riders, whether they will admit it or not, are C class level. The majority of "dirt bike tests " we see are by expert/int/pro riders. These tests rate the horsepower and equate that with "fast" and that is just not accurate, unless a bike is seriously down , like 15% or more.( none are) A few ponies here or there just don't matter unless you are a national caliber racer. What makes a bike fast to the average rider is everything about the bike. Is it comfortable, does the suspension work for you, are the bars correct and the right width, footpegs etc? I agree , if you buy a bike this season , get the color/brand you support. They are all amazing.

My fastest dirtbike experience by far is a 2004 KX250. Even if they dynoed it at 43hp back in the days it definitely feels like it has 4x the power of my dt125r which has about 18hp. The freaking kawi feels like a 2008 zx10-r (which I've also ridden). Even with long ass gearing 15/46 (stock 13/49) it wants to spin the rear on 5th gear and when it catches grip it pulls a wheelie. Way too much power unless for shits and giggles 😁

Not only is the bike loud but it’s not even a good loud. It sounds like crap!!! I put a PC pipe on mine and it helped a little. It also doesn’t help that the air filter is right in your lap so it intensifies the sound even more. Honestly I don’t know that I’d own another bike. It’s the only bike I’ve ever owned as a adult so I have nothing to compare it to. I love it.

Wait til you ride behind one with an fmf pipe. The stock mufflers fairly quiet. Damn Yamahas obnoxiously loud lol that’s for sure. Earplugs are a must. I came off ktms. It is a bummer to have to buy stuff but ya know what it could be worse. Could be a ktm and you could need kit suspension to get the bike to feel anywhere near as good as the kyb stuff on that 250. Each bike has its things they need. Try -5 -5 pegs. Helped my arm pump @6’2. helps your knees move to a spot they can grip a bit better and opens the rider triangle for a larger guy. I run a 999 bend bar. Forward mount flipped rear. Probably doing a wing seat myself soon I run them on everything else. Lol. Also grip tape is your friend. That’s helped a lot with staying in the correct position on the bike.

I'm sure the suspension comes with 'packing' oil and the manual states to have it serviced after 5hrs? I had mine done at 20hrs and the guy said any longer and my shock body would've been toast. There was just foam left in there! Bike is night and day better now!

As a taller guy, gripping is difficult. My boot gets hung on the frame every once in a while. It makes you sit on the tank to ride it which is amazing. Once you get the right map on it, it barks. I hated the map from the factory and switched to a passive/aggressive map. Ive been in love with it after i figured the app out.

need more info to suggest answers. like how long might it take to put 100 hrs on a dirt bike. cuz if only two years, than know the 150 will be so much cheaper and easier to maintain. next, are you thinking of riding tighter trails where you seldom get to 4th gear?... if so the 150 will be happier in that condition as well as feeling way lighter when changing directions quickly. are there big hills in your area that you can hit at high speeds? is there soft or sandy soil that can be deep and boggy? then you may prefer a 250F as they last longer in high load conditions like sand and mud. a 125 or 150 that's always using full power in sand will loose power in only 20 hours and need a top end rebuild to freshen it up. the 150 is a nice step up from a 125 and is easier to ride, but best not to limit yourself to a Euro brand to get a 150. the YZ2125 is a great bike to learn on. it's quick if you keep the revs up and is friendly for beginners. consider buying any old used 125 to get a taste for what you want without spending so much. then while out riding, try some buddy's bikes and see how you like modern 4 strokes. just don't get a 450. it's not good for beginners. but the better answer to all the above, is neither... get a trail bike with old school 4 stroke power like a TTR230 or CRF230. if you are under 5.8' and really want the best start in the off road experience, make it the Kawasaki KLR140RF with its 18/21" wheels. its cheap brand new and is way more fun than most bikes if the trails are fairly smooth and a little bit tight, because its low and light and super easy to pick up, but still capable for an adult. once you get used to the dirt then go back to this question of what to get in terms of more performance. it's about having fun and being happy, not feeling cool and trying to fit the mold.

good catch on the footpeg mounts! That's actually a big deal to me as I'm taller and the one of the reasons for staying on yamaha for my next bike is that the rider triangle is supposedly better for taller riders so higher footpeg platform not really appealing. I don't really worry about loss of low end as I don't really like arm jerking torque rolling through corners. It would be cool if you could do a follow up on using the mapping. The other thing I'm really curious about is how much engine braking can be tuned out rolling through corners. Great review!

Yamaha notoriously builds bikes with small rider triangles. This bikes no different. It’s better than the old chassis but it’s still cramped for big guys. I’m 6’2 and every single mod I’ve had to do has been related to rider triangle. -5 -5 ti pegs, bars. It needs a wing seat, idk what to do about footpeg mounts yet but -5 -5 helped.

All reasonably fair assessments. As a smaller rider, I don’t really notice how difficult it is to actually squeeze with your knees, but I can see it being a problem for bigger guys. My last three bikes have been KTM group with the most recent being the 23’ generation…this YZ dollar-for-dollar is a better value compared to them. You’ll pay 2k more and will be left wanting to drop another $1,000 for suspension.

Every ktm I own ended up with kyb conversions and highly worked shocks or kit shocks and kit forks. I love the 22 chassis 4 strokes and I love my 19 tx 300 (carb model) but it requires kit suspension for me to be able to keep the same pace as anything blue. Lol. I sold my fc450. Kept my 2ts and bought a yamaha for my moto bike, kept my 300 for my worcs bike. 😂😂😂 Sometimes the wallet and your choice in suspension dictates what bike you buy 😂😂. I figured with what kit suspension would cost me I can fix anything “wrong” with the Yamaha.

For real. Like others said in the comment thread too, for anyone other than fast intermediate/A/Pro-Expert, just go ahead and pick which color plastic you like best because it’s not likely you’ll shave 20 seconds off a lap time going from one to another. Suspension-wise though, it’s hard to beat the blue ones as their baseline setting works really well across multiple skill levels and terrain.

extra loud or not, everyone needs to be wearing ear plus when on any dirt bike. you will have less stress, ride faster and... wont go deaf. find an ear plug that is firm and does not bother your ears (practice when not riding to make sure they don't itch or bother). the key to ear plugs is to put them way way in, let it set a minute, them tug them out to where its more comfortable and you can still hear a bit more. it's about 1/3 back out. cut off the outer 20% of any ear plug you use in in a helmet. if they stick out they will catch on the helmet and drive you crazy or fall out. if your worried about hearing other bikes, dont worry. you can actually hear other sounds better with ear plugs in. just make sure they are not all the way in. you are trying to reduce the sound a bit, but not get the full 29db noise reduction of the plug. lastly, if you ride in the hills and change elevation quickly, you will need to get music stage ear plugs. they are vented and will allow for the pressure changes. unfortunately if they are too long they wont work, cuz they cant be clipped off.
