Bypassing the tire pressure sensor on a 2005 Toyota 4Runner

I have a blinking tire pressure indicator on my 4Runner. I believe one of the sensors was never replaced after an accident. I don't want to spend the money on a new sensor and don't need it anyway. This is an easy way to fool the computer into thinking that the sensors are present and functioning. Using this method, you can actually replace your wheels with aftermarket wheels and not have to install sensors in them. Or if your sensors are failing, you don't have to spend the money on diagnoses at a garage and have them replaced.
If you disconnect the battery, the engine or transmission may need to go through a relearn process. All you'll need to do is drive it like normal. The computer will relearn how to control the transmission. This is normal for many makes of vehicles after disconnecting the battery. Also, the windows may need to go through a relearn process. Here is the process for the windows.
Fully open the window and continuing pressing the button for at least two seconds after the window is fully open. Then fully close the window and hold the switch for at least two seconds once the window is closed.

Thank you, I did this on my 2004 Toyota 4 runner & the light went out. At tire shop today salesman said it would be around $90 a wheel to replace & fix the TPMS . That’s $360 for all. I’m so happy to not ever have to deal with sensors again. Merry Christmas this is a big deal to me. Again thank you 🙏😊🎄

Tobias, Thank you SO much for this step by step video repair to permanently turn off the blinking tire pressure indicator light on my 2005 Toyota 4Runner... My biggest challenge was finding the correct "open" wire "tap" to link the two wires. Found on Amazon with this description: "3M Scotchlok Electrical IDC 560B-BOX, Double Run or Tap, Flame Retardant, Blue, 18-16 AWG (solid/stranded), 14 AWG stranded)"... Perfect repair! With my sincere appreciation.

Also works on a 2004 Toyota 4 Runner. Just make sure and press the wire tap or crimp hard. I had to press it with a pair of pliers to make the connection. Thank you for a great video. That light flashing, especially at night was irritating. I check my tire pressure so much I don’t need TPMS

Yeah, definitely important to make sure the wires are completely crimped in whatever kind of connector you use. Cool, glad it worked out for you. Definitely a feature that's not necessary and can have annoying issues, especially for people that want to use aftermarket wheels and don't want to install sensors.

Going to do this today. At one point we took our 4runner back again and again after new tires until we discovered it was the spare tire that was setting off the tpms light. Now it just stays on all the time and all the tires (and spare) are at inflated specs. Ordered the "plastice jumper clips" (see another's comment for what to order from amazon) and am now ready to do this today. I'll watch the video and begin the process and I'm sure I'll come back inside and watch it and pause as I go along. Will be so nice not to see that light off when I know the tires are all inflated. Thank You and good luck to anyone else with this problem.

  • @Liberty4Ever

Huge thanks. I just bought a 2005 4Runner and of course, the TPMS light is on. I'm not inclined to install new TPMS sensors with every tire change, which would be the only way to have a fairly reliable system. I'll keep good tires on it, look at them to see that one isn't obviously low, and check the pressures a couple of times a year. I'll probably wire a small switch in there and label it TPMS - ENABLE/DISABLE.

YOu said you were going to "reconnect everything" but did not show that step. Did you pkug the shorted connector into the TMPS device? I saw another video in which the author jumped teh two wires by placing a jumper into the two pins, taping over teh jumper and leaving it loose - did npot reinsert it into teh TPMS device. BTW those are IDC or Insulation Displacement connectors - they do NOT pierce the wires. Rather, they split the insulation allowing the wire to be pressed into the narrow opening/slit(s) in that little bit of metal in the connector.

If you see this i have question. By doing this could this cause some kind of warning code that would make it fail inspection?

I’m planning on doing this on my 4Runner 2005. In case I change my mind, can I revert the procedure by just taking the blue clip out? (I appreciate the patience as I’m new in this subject). Thank you!
