Something I saw pointed out is how Sakurai made a point to show how Byleth's lance outreaches swords, and the axe is weak to counters which are predominantly used by sword characters, so in a way he put WTA in Byleth's set.

I find the SSBU videos so charming. I don't even have a Switch (i want to tho) but Sakurai is a really good presentation and showman imo. It has a kind of dorky but charming personality and even more gives interesting info that makes me curious about the franchise he is talking about.

Honestly it just seems like Sakurai is a big Fire Emblem fan and that's why there are so many of those characters in Smash. I'm very much okay with that and it reminded me that I still need to play Three Houses.

I finished Three Houses Monday. Amazing game, an I still don't think Byleth was a good choice. People can insult me all they want and call me "ungrateful baby", but that just shows which side is less mature. P.S How am I responsible for people threatening Sakurai? Because that's the only argument I see being used and its not a fair one considering the death threats are very minute in volume compared to the entire community.

Sakurai seems so excited and happy here, so of course the fandom is salty. The man is a Fire Emblem fan. Accept it. Probably one of the characters in the next fighter pack will be a new Pokémon from SwSh. It just be that way.

But Ike for me isn' a marth clone... In any case, Byleth is not a clone or echo fighter, is very unique and its seem fun to play. And Three Houses is a top sale game, and maybe the most popular FE game in the west

I think the reasoning was that at the time of SSBU's release Byleth was known by name and in a couple trailer clips and IS had already delayed Three Houses for the first of what would be two different times. Sakurai got the game a few weeks early, but that still forced him to have Byleth be put on the back burner until the end of the DLC train. If the game had released late 2018 as was originally planned Byleth probably would have been one of the first reveals.

For now, I'm referring to Byleth's specials by the Combat Arts granted by the weapons: (Neutral: Fallen Star, Side: Atrocity, Up: Ruptured Heaven, Down: Raging Storm)

I’ve been doing the same, but referring to the Up Special as Heaven’s Grapple, it makes a little more sense :)

Something I think gets overlooked is while its true we have a ton of swordfighters we also have a ton of hand-to-hand fighters that outrank them. The Mario chars, Capt. Falcon, Yoshi, Pokemon, Terry Bogard, Snake, etc.

It's hard to be mad at someone as entertaining as Sakurai.

They didn’t force him. Sakurai said he was given a list of characters by Nintendo who were allowed to join and sakurai picked 5 of them out by himself. It just happened that being an fe fan meant that he would go to byleth as one of them

Mick's Up I see your point clearer now. You could tell they were waiting for sakurai to put him in smash so they could be like “hey guys, this guy is in smash. How about purchasing the expansion from their game?” It may or may not have been kinda forced but you can tell it was heavily implied that if any 1st party was to come first, it had to be byleth. Like you said, sakurai went through with it since he’s a FE fan.

This is fine. Consider what you already got with the rest of the DLC. He got the crazy one with Joker, dream characters out of the way with Banjo/Dragon Quest, got an eclectic/out of left field pick with Terry, and is now doing something he enjoys on the other side of the spectrum. Let Sakurai/Nintendo have this. Accept that he likes FE and people like Three Houses

Terry was possibly the most personal pick out of these but also the most eclectic so I give him points for originality and his enthusiasm. And Byleth is the only Nintendo character in this DLC - from a popular game at that

And to be perfectly honest I don't think there really even needs to be any particular justification. If a man like Sakurai says "I wanted Byleth and I think FE is cool" or if Nintendo wants their recent popular game represented, then that's the end of it. I recall that Sakurai said that the lineup was locked in by Nintendo around when this rouns of dlc was first announced anyway

Yeah I agree, people should stop checking leaks, theories, and clickbaits, the best thing is to ignore them all, and that wouldn't ruin your experience and get mad for to the wrong people. Also Im pretty sure the roaster is made from big companies that are putting their characters there in the game, so if you want a character for free to be there, that won't happen, also that the roaster is already decided with some months of anticipation. And last this new map looks amazing!!

Are you saying all DLC characters come from other companies asking Nintendo and never the other way around? You are right that the roster was chosen months prior. Sakurai explained that himself in a Tweet in November 2018 before the game even launched. "Super Smash Bros. Ultimate’s DLC line-up is now complete. This time the selection was made entirely by Nintendo. I decide if we can create a fighter based on their selection, then come up with the plan."

@@Ayoul Well, Nintendo is many franchises, Fire Emblem being one too, like Pokemon and others, so yeah they belong to Nintendo, but not all of them works on the same games. So it seems like they can push what characters can be in the roaster too even if they are from Nintendo. In a marketing point of view of course. But you can see how it can backfire too, still I think people ask to much for the characters they like.

​@@Vernnell I just wanted to understand your original point. For a Japanese company, I'd probably expect it to come from the top down rather then the bottom up. Especially for a franchise Nintendo owns, they call the shots and not Intelligent Systems you know. I'm curious how it works for third party characters though and even the Mii Costumes. Like MS has nothing to gain from adding Banjo because they have nothing going on with that franchise. Terry Bogard comes from a series with no new game announced and it's well known Sakurai is a fan of that series. Why would Nintendo add things for Undertale and Cuphead if it wasn't coming from them (or Sakurai being a fan or whatever) directly for fan service? I'm thinking Nintendo gave Sakurai a list way larger than 5 and it was a iterative process to nail down the final five and acquire the rights to include them rather than all of them being advertisement slots. All those companies probably get some revenue from the DLC purchases I would assume though so maybe it's they pay for some of the dev cost of the character, but know they'll get a return from it regardless.

Ayoul 3rd party characters can go either way. Nintendo asking and hoping the 3rd party will sell then a reasonable license or 3rd party asking Nintendo giving them a licensing offer and hoping Nintendo takes the deal. Either way a some kind of licensing deal needs to be made. Sakurai simply can’t roll out of bed one day and say, “Iets begin work on Master Chief today!” because copyrights and trademarks are a thing. For all we know, a character like Master Chief or Sora have been considered by Nintendo, but Microsoft and Disney could have easily been like, “We would gladly let you borrow our character, scenery, and music as long as you pay thiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiis much.” If the deal is not reasonable financially it wouldn’t be smart for Nintendo.

@@jenniferhamels1176 Yeah exactly, which is why I think it's more of a profit margin type thing rather than Nintendo outright paying an exorbitant price for the rights or the companies paying for the promotion outright. I'm also thinking every company gets the same deal rather than have representatives haggle all day. No one wants to tarnish relationships because of their ego for a DLC in a beloved game. Everyone seems to be wanting to do this in good faith (Phil Spencer spoke rather openly about this) and both parties benefit from this at the end of the day.

While I’m personally excited for Byleth, I think more people who were disappointed should honor Sakurai’s request and accept what we got. I don’t think any of the hate is deserving of a man that always gives us so much. Let’s bring the Byleth hype

Kiryu ain't bad, Yakuza popularity kicked up around the same time as Fire Emblem but he's an infinitely more iconic character than anyone from FE. I love Goro Majima, but he's better suited as a stage hazard.

If there's ever going to be a FE fighting game I would be very glad if Sakurai would be the one to make it. Since it's clear he's a big fan of the series.

I love three houses this is great!! I was surpised as I thought it would be all third party. I find it weird how gaming fans on one hand can get salty that three houses doesnt get enough recognition at the game awards enough to get it the fan choice award and also be salty that its represented in smash bros. Different games sure, but there is surely some overlap there? People need to look for the good in things more. Theres another 6 to come now wow and this is a cool addition regardless of how many fire emblem characters are already in the game. Sakuari and his team work so hard all I can really say is thank you for all their amazing work and counting to do so

Man people are completely PISSED. Such a shame, the character looks good (albeit probably not for pro play since they look a bit slow), the stage looks good, good music choices (with 1 really big omission), some pretty cool Mii Costumes (Whoo Megaman EXE got some love!). I get being disappointed, but it's not THAT bad.

I really disagree. There’s no evidence to back that up. It was let in because it was a hit game and amazing to play. If they wanted to advertise, they wouldn’t have done 6 months after once the hype has died down.

So wait, if a character who sakurai knows people will get upset with in smash can get in, then there is absolutely no reason Tracer couldn't get in smash. Also: I'm not saying she's likely, but there is really no reason why she couldn't get in know

That's also one of his quirks when he's on podcasts. When he feels like it's his turn to talk with certain subjects, he'll often go on a long monologue that is essentially just rephrasing what other people have said right before him without adding much. I can't not notice it anymore.

Did you notice a color pattern in the Fighters Pass? Joker = *red,* Banjo = *yellow,* Byleth = *green,* Terry = *blue,* Hero = *purple* Do you think Pass 2 might have a similar color pattern?

It's cool that Fire Emblem fans are excited, but it's a bummer to see another representative of that game in smash for a lot of others, including myself. Was really hoping it would be someone new.

It can’t always be surprise third party additions. Byleth’s release was to promote the fire emblem dlc

EDIT: Seemed to be positive at the time I posted it, guess it’s more of the same now :( Lots of people gotta remember, just like DQ Hero, this was a pick thats apparently exploding hype in Japan.

Kelly Johana Link, zelda and ganon are the only zelda characters that would sell as dlc.

Such a weird, weird note to end the Pass on. However, you can tell they had a BLAST making this trailer. Fem!Byleth looked so damn happy

It makes sense because Byleth is technically free for people that purchased the Fighters Pass.

I actually think that BOTW 2 Zelda would be the best character to end this new pass.

Would have loved Dimitri or Claude playable in some way over Byleth (Pokemon Trainer style would have been cool). Glad the different weapons are implemented at least. Even Felix would have been a far more interesting character!

byleth hav alot skill and range. got super armor , a laser shoot arrow that whole map , range spear and grab air whip sword and most of them skill dmg 30 - 28%. damn

No excuse for not having Rex, Pyra/Mythra, Nia, Roc and FS Pneuma in there

I love how noone gives a fuck about byleth, idk what nintendo/sakurai were thinking saving this for last or even doing this at all

That wouldn't stop them from picking him. Besides, he's much more then that. The only way Dante could get snuffed is If Capcom themselves don't want him in which is very unlikely.

Don’t understand all the hate, it’s a good character and Sakurai really seems to love Fire Emblem. Fire Emblem 3 houses was a big hit in Japan. I think it’s mostly the leaks bringing disappointment getting people hyped for a character that won’t be added.

I think it's more about how exciting and different every other character in the pass was and the fact that Fire Emblem has so much representation in smash. Even if they were going to stick with Nintendo IP there are so many other options I'd go to before another dip into FE. Hell, even within Three Houses one of the house leaders would be way more interesting. Instead we have a 3rd protagonist character and all of them are designed to be silent blank slate characters. It's just so boring.

@@hungrypenquin the problem with that is including one house leader would be unfair on the other two (I'd love to play as Edelgard). Besides, Byleth looks like he/she plays very differently to the other FE characters (and this way we get not one but four relics). At least you get the option to have a skin for each house leader.

Dang, Dante might've actually gotten me to finally try smash but oh well. Maybe next time

They clearly did their best to soften the blow of it being another Fire Emblem character... as best as they could when everyone was expecting Dante which is like... the biggest character to get your hopes up for. Anyway Black Eagles! Queer House representing!

The fact there are actually people who thought “oh this announcement won’t be ANOTHER fire emblem character this time it’s gotta be Dante, waluigi, goku, THE CHOICES ARE ENDLESS” L&R ;) guess not

You people should learn to keep your request to yourselves and let Nintendo do it's part.

I love that Sakurai can just choose the characters he wants to as he pleases. If he is going to have to make 6 more characters now, and he wants a Fire Emblem character, he deserves a Fire Emblem character. Even if its not a Fire Emblem character I necessarily would have picked myself.

@Sebastian Ramirez No, Nintendo gave him a larger set of characters and then he picked the specific ones that would be DLC. So there were likely many options that were not Fire Emblem which he could have picked and he chose FE. He didn't fully pick them, Nintendo gave him a selection to pick from, but he made the final decisions.

@Sebastian Ramirez I mean either way he had the ability to turn down characters if he wanted to, he clearly had no problem with Byleth being in the pass even if he didn't chose Byleth himself.

Even as an FE fan I see how this is disappointing. It's a super strange decision to pack a fighter pass with 4 guest characters and 1 non-guest at the very end, even stranger to do that and then emphasize how little anyone else at Nintendo knew about it immediately before revealing the character. Honestly don't know if maybe FE is bigger in Japan than in the West, so maybe this is more palatable to them.

I'm not mad at the character I'm just disappointed this is the fighter we finished fighter pass 1 on. Byleth should have straight up been the third or fourth character revealed. That way we could have ended with a bang, one two combo with Banjo then Terry.

I don't Hate FE, But I also do not Care. Also I have no ties to Persona so for me the Only fighter of this batch I care for is Banjo. So some personal disappointment but no hatred on my part.

I might be the only one, but I love this pick. Give me as many fire emblem characters as you want.

Too many Mario characters but we only bitched after piranha plant got in geno didn’t get in. Yet ever time fire emblem character gets put in after chrom daughter and the avitar we complained every time. Series favoritism a hypocrisy I sense in you people.
