Bye Bye Delos! - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 202

What does it take to get a sailboat like Delos ready to haul out and be stored in the yard for a few months? Join us for the last sail of the season on Delos and we’ll walk you though it! It takes quite a bit of work to do it properly but with the right knowledge and planning it’s not too bad.
This video has a lot of love, deep reflections of our lives on the water and a lot of boat work as we prepare Delos to be hauled out while we head back to visit our families for a few months.
Much Love ~ Kazza and the Crew

I grew up watching Jacques Cousteau in the 70's and reading Nat Geo mags until I fell asleep, dreaming of ocean adventures and traveling to far away lands. Discovering your channel (and others' ) brought it all back. You've done it right, documenting the journeys, remarkable film making, engaging story lines with terrific people, crew and destinations most of us will never visit. We connect with you and the seas maybe never experienced before on film. It is unique and infectious. You explore the oceans and share your experiences with us all in a way that stands with any oceanography or nature show - but is presented as an entertaining real-life series. Sailing Delos is Emmy worthy but an award would be understated. The true prize, the real treasure is that you've shared your experiences with the world, bringing so many of us happiness and perhaps a virtual fountain of youth experience. Thank you and please don't ever stop. Massive respect. Cheers!

So many wonderful comments must make the entire crew feel that they have accomplished so much while making a meaningful positive difference in so many lives. The editing, photography, narrative etc. make the whole effort, and it is a lot of work, worthwhile. May the higher power bless you all over the holidays and keep you safe In the warm arms of your friends. You have been away a long time, but what a joyous time, for all of us as well. Heartfelt thanks.

Brian, seeing the emotion on your face as Delos came out of the water reminded me of watching the birth of our daughters. I don’t sail; but do dream of it often though as I have followed you all since day one. So I understand and respect the rawness of helplessness, trusting others, gauging when to step in, when to hold back. In those brief moments I saw your world lifted high and the proud feelings of all that you have accomplished suspended and held up for all of us to share in. We have never met and I hope we do one day, so from the Blue Ridge Mountains here in Virginia I cannot adequately express how much I have come to respect the way you handle yourself, your boat and crew. Your baby Delos will be anxiously waiting for you too as we all will. Thank you all for including us in your lives. I am grateful and touched by the work you put into each episode. Thank you all Delos crew...thank you.

I truly admire Brian for his calm and cool demeanor even when things get crazy. I have taken bits and pieces from him to use in my approach in speaking to my wife and 9 year old son. The way you treat people and teach is great and has helped me be closed to family and friends and enjoy life much more. Thanks Brian 👍🏼

I Think, if they have disagreements, they still say it in a calm and kind way. It's easier, when you keep in mind, that you like for the other to understand you, instead of blaming him. The others day I heard a phrase, that stucked in mind: When given the choice between being right and being kind, choose kind. RedogZuk 👍

Now it's on to clean up some loose ends in the Ep 203-250 range, and then back to Maine for the trip back to the Caribbean and Panama, and then I'll be up to date, waiting with everyone else for new episodes.

I think they haven't reached 1M Subs, is because they haven't sold out and gone commercial with multiple sponsorships like audiobooks, music subscriptions, Amazon wish list, gear, clothing, ect. (Sponsorship significantly grows your subscriber base, but with that comes responsiblity to advertise products, clothing, gear or wish lists that come with discounts to the people buying or subscribing to it, so you have commision and quota and deadlines. Sponsorship is basically an employer that you are obligated to via a contract *but they use the term* we've partnered with.) I like that they stay true to themselves, staying authentic and doing whatever they can to bring awareness to conservation groups and keeping the reefs healthy, among many other eye opening conditions around the world, good and not so good, all the while taking us along with them on great adventures and keeping a healthy balance between work and play. Other channels may have more Subs for the sake of people clicking subscribe, but I think Delos has a larger base of loyal regular watchers. They are givers, not takers or opportunists. Jmo😊⚓⛵💕🙋‍♀️

Excellent last sail of Delos and the Paterons getting to sail both racing and live aboard vessels. By boat is a much nicer way to travel the globe than in some big RV and you cant use the wind and sail with and are limited by big blue spots were they cant travel from place to place. Excellent tip for looking for a hold off spot to hide from hurricanes. Out with the old in with the new for cooking that is. Lion charge to the rescue. Now on to the next Season.

I wanted to write something clever after watching this episode, but I'm at such a loss for words as an almost unexplained melancholy has wash over me. Holy cow, I'm actually misty. What a softy I've become at 75. In fact, when my wife just noticed my mood while I was typing this, she just shook her head and smiled. Gee's. Anyway, you might recall from a previous message, that my 100 year old mother (maybe your oldest fan) and I have watched you every Friday since the beginning, and she wanted you to know that we're both going to miss your incredible adventures over the next few months. Yet, on the other hand, we're both so happy for all of you guys because we know that while Delos is "on the hard," your lives will be enriched and recharged by all the love each of your families and old friends will give to you. Thank you all for allowing us to come along with you each week, so we can vicariously live your incredible lives along with you as you sail the oceans of the world to far away exotic lands we will never otherwise get to see. Much love from frigid Wisconsin. And now, I think I'll just go light a fire and sit by the hearth with a nice glass of wine and toast SV Delos and crew with a toast my mother taught me in Spanish. Translated, it means, "Here's to health, love, wealth, and the time to enjoy them." God bless.

It's hard to put Delos, or any sailboat, on the hard for any length of time. It's kinda like putting a horse in the stall. Horses are bred to run and sailboats to sail. I know the feeling. Mine gets hauled every other year and it takes a week for me to do everything that needs to be done to her. But, you guys did the right thing by cleaning and organizing really well and that'll make the transition back to her that much easier. Since I'm here in Alaska, during the winter months when the winter cover is on, I go thru everything on the interior and clean, fix, org, pitch, toss, and otherwise get her ready for the upcoming season. Since our season is so short here (April-September), it's important to have the boat ready in the spring, instead of trying to get her ready. Enjoy the time on terra firma and I look forward to your upcoming epic episodes!

One day of course you will all have everything, but dont forget every now and again at sea you did have so much more than this. Funny how space can trick you into thinking you were hard done by but in truth that really wasnt so. As you part your ship to explore other parts of your life again! take with you everything you had that others just dont have.

I've been watching your channel for a few months now and I can't believe how close I feel to all of you. I imagine all Delosians feel the same way. If I could wish myself to anywhere anytime I would be hand steering Delos across the Atlantic with you guys. Thank you for all the work you put in to bring your life to us, even the grimy bits like toilet explosions and engine repairs. For a land locked person like myself you provide a breath of fresh air, a taste of freedom few of us with ever know. To 2019, may it be the best season yet for Delos and her crew.

Delos... simply one of (I don't know any better) the best if not THE best series on the KZread. Simply fascinating following y'all. Keep filming and editing. The editing has grown so much. Such good work. Some of the "rawness" of the early episodes has worn off, I'm not sure if that is a good thing or not. It reflects the maturation of the adventure, perhaps. Thank you for sharing the experience.

It's kinda odd. As a teenager, all the way into my mid-20's, I sailed a lot. And loved it. Still do, but now I am landlocked in a high mountain desert. Then, about a year ago, a friend of mine bought a boat. A piece of trash, and he quickly realized that and put it in the scrapyard. He knew I had sailed, so he asked for advice on buying a boat - what to look for and so on. But I had been out of the loop for the last 20 years... I started researching, found a few cruising channels on youtube along the way. My friend lucked out and bought a fully decked out cruising sailboat for a fairly cheap price (about $70k for a 55ft boat in excellent condition, set up for single sailing). He's been happy as a clam since. That started me dreaming again, after I had buried my dreams for so long. I realized that my current life isn't what I wanted nor what I need. Mind, I _love_ my job. But: I can work from anywhere where there's even modem-speed Internet. So... out came the spreadsheet. Now, months later, the path is quite clear: * Save up $100k for a decent boat and refits (I insist on electric+emergency generator because I SUCK at gas/diesel maintenance). * Save up at least $200k for a nest egg. In the worst case, if I calculate ~$1500/month for living expenses plus maintenance, insurance etc.pp., that gives me about 10+ years or so even if I end up having zero income, which is unlikely. If I live extremely frugally, I can save that up in 5 years or less. And I'll be back doing what I love: Sailing. Sometimes it takes channels like Delos, Britaly, RAN, the Wynns and so on to get ones ass off the couch and realize that dreams sometimes are dreams because one is too lazy to make them reality. There's other obstacles, certainly. For me at least, they're not insurmountable.

Dejavu I think, on replacing the stove top and batteries? Awsome end of the sailing season. No better feeling than doing a clean out, makes it like a new boat on return, plus a lighter and faster boat. It's already happened, but Merry Christmas friends.

"Never been more prepared!" . . . or so they thought . . . lol Great job doing what needed to be done! And it was fun watching from beginning to end. : - ) My 20' Paceship is also on the hard right now - in my driveway. I still need to winterize it but have been delayed because WINTER (!) decided to hit in early/mid November here in central NYS. It's 26 degrees F outside right now and too cold to arrange the BIG tarp over the (now horizontal) mast. When done, my boat is under a big "tent" until warmer weather returns. So that is this tribe member's story about getting his sailboat ready for the "off" season. Maybe I should make a video too?

I love induction cooktops. There's a learning curve cooking with induction . It gets hotter faster way faster . At times it seems like it's not getting warm or things aren't cooking but in reality it's burning. You have to have good pans. Not necessarily top-quality just made of the right material. Works awesomely with cast iron which I love. I need to find a way to send you a 12 pack. We have this local brew in Fort Worth called Martin house. They make a beer called salty lady.
