Sailing to the Volcano that buried a city. - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 230
Want to see how a modern city looks after being buried in a pyroclastic flow? After randomly drawing our Patreon crew contest winners Martin and Crystal, Delos sets sail leaving Antigua in our wake. After a few hours of fantastic downwind sailing we anchor ourselves in the protection of the island and begin our exploration. It turns out the entire south portion of the island is an off-limits exclusion zone to protect the population from the very active volcano. We get a permit from the government to enter the exclusion zone, and along with our local guide Joe enter the abandoned villages and towns that used to be homes to thousands of people. What we find is absolutely amazing and creeps at the same time. It's literally a modern ghost town buried in volcanic ash, rocks, and mud. We fly the drone and get as close as possible to capture the experience from both the air and ground.

It's sooo cool to see Lisa is still involved with the project.
I can definitely see Leesir's touch on the editing! Great job! Would love to see her appear back in future episodes.

you haven't moved on!
Loved this one. Typical Delos episode. Some sailing, some exploring and history, and making fun of Brady doing a dirty deed.
One of the things that separate Delos from other channels is the quality of the videos. The hard work is evident. Thank you.
I am traveling and touring the whole world through Delos....from Kenya. God bless you
"do you want an egg?".....I love that blu!
Leesir, missing you mega........ when are you coming back for another trip???? Once again, you have made another classic Delos episode with a heap of very very interesting information and history - entertaining to the max!!!!! Absolutely love it :)
Regarding paying a fee at the top of the hill "We're not going to let that happen"... lmao. OMG, I am watching all of the episodes again, as they are just THAT GOOD. I do not/can not do that with any other KZread channel, no matter what the genre.
It's so great that you covered such an abandoned area in such detail
It is bizarre how great your production and content is compared to your subscriber numbers (compared to others with higher numbers). Every week you just make my week.
That pan band sounded great playing Dire Straights! The view is spectacular at the beginning. Your productions for utube are simply great. Love everything. Blessings! ❤️⚓️
Dear Delos Crew, I love your amazing videos and your journey. I thought to reach out and share a special recipe with you (for your visitors who might fight the sickness): Recipe against sea & travel sickness Use piece of cotton wool and twist it until you have a little cotton sausage. If you are right handed put that little cotton sausage in your left ear, and vice versa if you are left handed. It should fit easily and make sure not pushing it too far. The cotton eases the middle ear where the balance centre sits and helps to avoid travel sickness. It also helps when you are already feeling a bit sick. Happy sailing everyone! Uwe from Nomad Sailing Retreat
I binged every episode and the first thing i did was buy you guys a beer. I grew up since then and realised 5 million viewers can not sail on one boat. Thanks all you guys. Work from heart space and the wind will do what is needed. P.s. not only do i not get passport stamps i burn my passports as soon as they are expired met lots of old people holding onto old passports in old books are still attempting to live past lives. Be Present be now. You guys are the teachers.
7:49 wow dude in the background is really gettin in there....
How “unexcited” was Martin in his call from Brian! I would have been going bananas man! I hope hope he “wakes up”!
Martin is funny hit reason why he started watching delos is the same reason why i clicked on the video. LOL But i have grown to love this channel.
What an incredible yet sobering view of the power of mother nature that nearly buried an entire small city / village with volcanic ash over a few years. I had the the honor to visit Pompeii in Italy about 15 years ago and it was totally mind boggling to think an entire major city was buried under about 50 feet of ash and rock as well as the coast line extended out about a mile from the original shore. The eruption at Montserrat clearly shows this is possible - it was caught on film for all to see and it could have been much worse for the local population if it had not been for today's technology. Great episode! Fair winds SV Delos.
I can't believe what interesting "tours" you guys get into. Very educational and historical! Great job!!!
Sufriere Hills largest eruptions (in the current era) measure at a Volcanic Explosivity Index of 3. To give that some perspective, Mt. St. Helens was a 5 and Krakatoa was a 6. The largest volcanic eruption in the last 100 years was the 1993 eruption of Mt. Pinatubo in the Philippines at a 6. There is evidence that Sufriere Hills has had much larger eruptions in the past, possibly as high as a 6. The whole Island would have been buried and there would have been many deaths if Sufriere Hills erupted like Pinatubo did. Luckily for them, it was a relatively small eruption.
Great to see that Leesir is still involved with the editing. Do you think she will ever come back to sail with your guys again, at least for a short time period? I think that would be great.
Rad episode!
Quite simply....Wow!!
Welcome aboard Martin and crystal. excellent video Guy's and Gals. so well put together. kudos to Lessir and Mr, Brady. keep them coming. makes for a good sit and watch time.
Videos just keep getting better and better and better. Keep allowing us to tag along on your glorious journeys .
Great video from many aspects. You could feel Leesir's touch. Whenever she's in the credits I realize how much we all miss her. Good for Kazza for not letting a baby bump hold her back. The whole crew looks wonderfully healthy and happy. I always learn a lot every time I watch.
Great episode. I remember being fascinated by this event.
A nice dose of Leesir music curating
I saw the 2009 eruption of Soufriere Hills! I was on Guadeloupe and noticed a weird-looking cloud which I thought was almost volcanic. That was a time when you didn't have internet just anywhere, anytime, certainly not on a beach holiday, so I didn't look it up until weeks later and only then found out that it really had been the eruption I had seen. Crazy stuff.
Rhuben was by far my fav patron
The music was so good this episode. The interspersing of classic with contemporary- really well done.
It's so eerie but yet so beautiful at the same time to see mother nature take back what is hers.
Thank you AGAIN ! ! ! to the Delos Crew for bringing me to fabled Monserat, home of the Volcano that ate up a city and pushed out the population. A volcano that was much in the news as I finished college and first began to teach students Earth Science. A place that had called my name, I now feel like I visited via Crew Delos' [and Durango guests].
Best video yet. Each is better than the last. Only thing missing is watching Brian fix something which is my favorite. You guys are a breath of fresh air in a sea of ash
Hi guys! I have been watching your videos, not missing any of them for over two years now. I see how much better your videos became, color, lights, dynamics, points of view, drone footage. Editing is just top notch! So, I was wondering if you could make a separate video dedicated to sharing more information on what equipment you are using for videos, what for still shots, how you do hand shooting, do you use any gimbals, DSLRs? What you use for taking underwater footage, what lighting, what drone.... I mean everything. I hope you do not hold secrets about these things. I am VERY curious and I am sure there are plenty of others who would like to know same things. Please, share.
I was there when the first Eruption happened in 1995 visiting a friend of mine and it was actually Scary seeing it and the realization of how powerful something like that actually is. He actually left the Island and stayed with me until he got on his feet because he lost everything. Lizbeth got fined for anchoring on the wrong side of the Island and going ashore lol!

I found her channel randomly. I always wondered why the Delos crew never mentioned her again or gave her channel a shout-out.

@@JakeHolman78 I also wonder if they have seen the videos from Nate and Jordan (Expedition Drenched) who have bought a large steel boat in New Zealand and are attempting a similar venture, funding their sailing from passenger fees and patreon. The feel of their videos is quite different, much less polished, but it would be good to have Brian and Kazza and Brady and Alex review some of those ex-Delos people we have met and who have moved on: what are their feelings?

@@rogerstone3068 Brian and Kazza did talk about them and their new boat in their recent Q&A. But it would be cool to hear everyone talk about what past crew are up to.
l have seen every video of SV Delos. This is the coolest ! I love your dad at the end. Scenes and pictures and info are great.
Beautiful footage in the exclusion zone, got me quite nostalgic, seeing how these people had to leave their homes and were never able to come back. It's almost Chernobyl'ish
Thanks for posting and sharing. Glad to hear about the visit to Monserrat, and see the fortunate guest crew who were able to accompany you all.
I honestly think is one of the coolest vids I've seen from y'all so far...and I've been watching since before Alex joined the crew. I am also happy to see that Lisser (sp?) is still involved! I'd love to see her and Liz again!
Lucky winner, love the videos, have a great weekend & fair winds ⛵️ 💨

Another great adventure 😉
Once again you have gone above and beyond to provide for us an in depth view of certain circumstances that we would never have even dreamed to see. So much more than surface descriptions and views. Well done again. Excellent.
Great content. We passed it up in 2014...regret not visiting it now.
I live vicariously through y'alls videos. Y'all make my week..
loved the perspective from the end of the running/wing on wing pole... great adventure exploring the "exclusion zone" .. sounds like a movie title
Fantastic vlog guys . Thanks muchly for sharing . Bet ya new crew are having a ball Fair winds :-D

I started crackin up when Brady is like, "the last thing I want right now is to eat an egg!" hahaha
¡Mi favorita todavía! My favorite one yet!
Delos keep doing Delos awesome episode
THANK YOU!!!
Even though school is about to start this KZread channel brings me joy
Another fantastic episode!!!
Leesir i miss seeing you with the crew...❤️❤️❤️
This video was on another level. What an amazing story.
My favorite outro.
That mini doc on the valcano was awesome! Incredible pictures and videos. Thanks
Lizbef visited here once. Just wandered into the exclusion zone at ash covered Plymouth. Without permission. "Oh... There was a volcanic eruption here"?...😣. Classic.
best thing on any media... entertaining and educational...🙂
Great drone footage of an area being forcibly reclaimed by nature ! You guys get to go to all the best places !
Beautiful Leesir sneak back on board Delos!
Senor Brady’s piano accompaniment @20:30 totally tripped me out. Great choice and excellent editing!
INCREDIBLE!!! Best vlog yet!!
Very nice vid! Hi Leesir!!
So much more enjoyable since the Drenched folks are gone. Much better vibe!
i came across your channel trough searching for diving videos... abd now im addicted ❤️ and while im saving for my next vaccations, thank you so much to let us in on your amazing adventures! im happy to found you! ✌️❤️ much love from Austria/Vienna 🇱🇻
Awesome video. Loved the tour and info about the volcano that buried the city. Thank you!
Gosh you are putting out awesome content at the moment. Peace and love Delos
Again awsome thank you guys.
Thanks for the tour of the Montserrat exclusion zone. This was another great video.
Great as always, Thank you.
Brilliant videography!
The “Pole Out” camera angle is classic Delos ingenuity!!!
21:53 How cool is it to phone the ATC, and get the permission to fly a drone close to an airport - immediately.
Wow, Durango Colorado. I lived there from 1976-1980. Last time we went there was for the Harley rally, and man! that town had changed.
One of your most interesting stories. Thanks guys.
Best volcano aftermath footage we’ve ever seen. Thanks!
Down to earth on a high level. Delos style. A buckt full of thx.
Best part is the very end where ol' dad chimes in with "I like it. I like it a lot." Very salty dude.
The footage is unbelievable I can't imagine seeing it in person awesome video
It's sad that all those people weren't just watching the sunset...but it's also amazing I get to watch it on my screen. This is the tension of judgement, life and content.
what an excellent episode! THANK YOU for sharing your story! It is ironic I just saw Nate and Jordan @ Drenched Divers, now Expedition Drenched, cover Mansaraat as part of their rime with Rick Moore of Sailing Sophisticated Lady.....what a tragedy the havoc the Volcano brought on....so sad for the lives lost and way of life lost for many!
Hi Blue, you do the vids just Awesome. Your presentation is great, your voice is soothing, all around perfectly done. Congrats 💯🌷.
Excellent as usual!!!
Whooaas,,u're so lucky Martin...
I have being playing catchup on your vids since finding your channel. I wish I had found this episode earlier. My father was born on St Kitts and lived most of his childhood and adolescence on Montserrat. His father, my grandfather was the police commissioner on Montserrat. I could have possibly got you in contact with some locals living there :-(. Keep up the great work and live life to the fullest.
I love the shot of Delos sailing from the pole. That is so cool!! I have to say I know there is alot involved in releasing your videos. I feel like something is missing as I wait each week for Friday to come for you guys to release a new video.
Wow that video was wonderful-learned a lot-thank you!👍🙏❤️
WELCOME TO THE AZORES!! LOOKING FORWARD FOR YOUR NEXT UPLOAD!
Saved my day
Tony & Susan here, I do remember both eruptions, we spend much of our vacation time in the islands "lesser Antillis
