By the Weight of the Chain

Музыка

I wrote this song as a song about chivalry. To me, the best acts of chivalry are enacted with a heart of joy and forward motion and so this song shoots for both. I hope you enjoy it!

-- By the Weight of the Chain --
By the weight of the chain
of gold I wear upon me
By the white of the cloth
about my body bound
By the spurs on my heels
I do swear upon my honor
to uphold the Knightly virtues
till I lay beneath the ground.**
When I was young
I watched the Knights go riding,
their armor so bright
and their glory brighter still.
My hands were small
but my dreams lay large around me
and once the goal had found me
I set out to gain my skill.
By the weight of the chain
When I had fledged,
I served as I was able,
I found worthy knights
and asked to learn their ways.
My form grew strong,
sturdy plates I wore upon it -
when I finally could don it
and the heavy sword could raise.
By the weight of the chain…
When I had grown
I followed into battles
warriors of legend
with my war-kin at my side.
My mind grew calm,
all their lessons moving through me,
my foes could not undo me
with these masters as my guide.
By the weight of the chain…
When I was raised
I stood before my sovereigns
and my new kinsmen
and unto them pledged my troth.
My heart is bold,
To my best I shall endeavor
to defend the dream forever
which first took me toward my oath.
By the weight of the chain…
When I was young
I watched the Knights go riding,
their armor so bright
and their glory brighter still.
My hands were small
but my dreams they did bind me
now that the goal did find me
I will ever heed its will.

Seriously though, this song has a criminally low view count, it's such a perfect fit for the feeling of a devoted keeper of justice, so full of zeal and personified determination. The spirit behind it is charmingly bold. How you don't have thousands more hooked I can't say.

@@falconbridgemusic I tried lol. DND sessions are apparently hard to find at game stores in my area, but I did find one, and while I didn't make it, they had a premade half orc paladin I ended up using, but we haven't had many sessions since starting back at the end of June due to schedule conflicts. We're still all only level 2, but looking ahead a little bit, yea, paladins seem *horrendously* OP lol. I took 3 different smite skills on level up and the damage boosts to both myself and my party are a little insane XD

I am annoyed tho, it reminds me SO MUCH of another song I remember loving from yeeeears ago, and for the life of me *I cannot remember what it reminds me of*. But just the *energy* behind this...I listen to a wide variety of genre's and it's just so rare to hear even the most talented vocalists just put the kind of *NNNFF* behind the lyrics as you do. And to be honest it SOUNDS like you're doing it without even trying. Hats are off to you.

There are some songs that make a happy little level click in my head, and this has to be one of the finest yet. It might just be me, but I can't help but compare the themes to those of the Adepta Sororitas in 40k. I wish I could place my finger on the exact reason this song feels so... powerful. Im a writer, and I'd love to capture this same feeling in words, but I can't place why it rings. The lyrics tell a story, but they pass an emotion as well. Maybe it's the idea of full commitence to something freater than one's self. Maybe it is fantasitcal, but I have always wanted to find that one thing I could fully dedicate myself too. Maybe that's why this song speaks so profoundly to me. At any rate, this song is dreadfully under viewed. You have made a work of art.

I think what makes it “epic” is the invocation. “By the the weight of the chain… I swear upon my honor.” Makes it feel like they’re fighting for something bigger than themselves. Find someone or something your characters can swear to “for the honor of the Light” “For Queen and country” “For the God Emperor” etc. as well as being marketable it gives weight to characters actions. Alternatively you could go in the complete opposite direction (the Connan and Berserk route) have the enemies invoke higher powers but your protagonist cuts through them without praying to anything because they’re just that strong or their gods don’t really care about them. Both are epic in there own way and it depends on the feel you want your story to have. Hope that helps.

Any chance we could get a version of this on Spotify? Or maybe some other download/physical version? This gives me such tingly feelings and memories of looking up to knighthood as a child.

This song would well suit Ser Duncan The Tall, or Ser Barristan Selmy 'The Bold' both of whom embodied the best of what it is to be a knight, and both rose to wear the white cloak of the King's Guard.

As a police officer, I always wanted to help those in need since I was a kid. This song really speaks to me, even though in todays climate I'm treated terribly simply because of the public view has against law enforcement. Fantastic song to help remember why I do what I do.

Great song! However, I am a bit literal minded, and I worry about accidental loopholes in oaths. "...till I lay beneath the ground" is not the same as "till I am dead". While it is unlikely that someone will demand the knight to uphold knightly virtues between his death and funeral, the oath technically ends if he takes a nap in a cave, as that would be laying beneath the ground.

You might want to watch out for knights living in sod houses too. 😉 (I hope this isn't keeping you up at night too much!)
