BWCA Grouse Hunting and Fishing- Lake One to Snowbank Loop

Steven and I headed into the BWCA shortly before the ice was forecasted to arrive in 2023. We covered over 60 miles in 5 days and experienced a lot along the way. The fishing was slow but the ruffed grouse hunting was fantastic.

@@hoopdocs I was 19 the first time I was on Insula and was in charge of the map. I remember my one buddy getting mad that I kept stopping to read the map. I said "hey, you're not the one navigating!"

Nice combination adventure--thanks for sharing! Way back in the early 1960s, even though we were living in southern CA at the time, my late father talked about making a trip into the BWCA, but things never worked out for it to happen. Then, I worked for the 88th RSC for close to two years beginning in late October 1999 (sought and obtained a lateral transfer back to WA when I learned that my dad was terminally ill). During the 88th RSC appointment, I worked at Fort Snelling for thee weeks of each month, then made loops through various Army Reserve Centers in MN and western WI performing maintenance on the facilities during the fourth week. The farther north I got in MN, the better it suited my taste for wilderness! Unfortunately, I think Bemidji was probably the closest to Ely, International Falls and the BWCA that the schedule ever brought me. In my 70s now, I might have to resign myself to visiting vicariously through such videos as yours and those of a couple Canadians that produce very adventurous canoe trip journeys north of the border there.

@@wildernessenthusiast4307 Thanks, I appreciate the offer. If you ever have a hankering to chase Roosevelt Elk in the rain forest country of the Olympic Peninsula I'd be happy to share info for such an adventure.

@@willong1000 I would actually be very interested in that. I hunted elk near West Yellowstone in 2014 and haven't been back since. At that time I told myself I needed to go out west every 5 years, but that didn't happen. Perhaps I can start putting in for a tag. That would be a lot of fun!

@@wildernessenthusiast4307 I'll send you an email with more details anywhere from tonight to a couple weeks from now. (I apologize for being so imprecise, but life has gotten really challenging with health and other issues over past few years. I've got some business to address, and then I'm trying to get out to woods and water for a few days myself.) Anyway, a WA elk tag is available over the counter, even for non-residents as far as I know. I have not gone since 2018 myself. Mostly because of family and personal health issues, and financial tasks in wake of last parent's death and the Covid thing. If you are competent and confident in your archery shooting out to 50 or even 60 yards, then your best chance is an archery tag for the unit I have in mind. Second best is muzzle-loader tag. (In WA, we have to choose West or East of the Cascade Mountain crest; and, we also have to choose archery, muzzleloader or modern firearm as only choice for elk or deer. You'll learn more at the WDFW website, to which I will send you a link.
