BvS Reference: The Moral Argument

Фильм және анимация

For Zack Snyder's BvS References Challenge, I chose to examine how Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice asks questions about the theological and philosophical Moral Argument for the Existence of God.
It's an idea I've been thinking about a lot and I don't hear or read it being discussed so I thought I would give it a shot.

Another wonderful video, Rebecca. I believe Mr. Snyder reinforced Martha's beliefs and, most likely Jonathan's as well, when Clark sought out the Pastor's advice in MoS. As he was also shown in BvS, the Kents were probably regular attendees of that church. Have a blessed day.

I would agree that I think Father Leone was the pastor of the church that the Kents attended in Smallville. Father Leone gave Clark advice and would also be the one to lead Clark's funeral service.

duckmilkprod Thank you for the response including providing the gentleman's screen name. I can honestly say that the inclusion of God and Jesus in MoS was one of the aspects that I appreciated the most. Zack Snyder is, imo, a great director. I hope that we will see more from him in the DC cinematic universe. Yes,I can hope. Have a blessed evening, Rebecca.

I did not notice Marthas necklace either. But of course the Kents are religious, a typical american family living in Kansas. And they do not view Superman as some kind of christ person, but rather as their own child. Meanwhile parents and other kids(the ones saved at the bus, or those seeing Superman doing "weird stuff") sees him as that christ person, "act of got" etc. I am not religious at all, and I still see and appreciate how Snyder uses these religous symbols and such.

I would say Lex affirms this idea as well when he tries to criticize things for not being "good". By using the problem of evil, Lex shows he has an underlying belief that objective moral values and duties exist.

Richard's Reviews And I'd like to add that the Problem Of Evil only applies to religions where their God(s) be supposedly all-good and all-able, which would require Free Will + God letting people make their own mistakes (which is again based on faith) to squeeze by. Religions like the Greek pantheon who are made up of dicks, adulterers, and anger-management failures but still run the universe nonetheless so there, or the native Chinese religion pantheon who are basically a corrupt bureaucracy in the skies - but again, who runs the universe nonetheless so there, are not threatened by this atheist argument.

Since others (including myself) had already addressed Lex's expression of The Problem of Evil, I decided to leave it out of this video. I also wanted to keep this one relatively short and delving into The Problem of Evil would have taken a lot more time. But, I would 100% agree with you. I think Lex DOES recognize that there is good and bad. He's a fascinating character because he doesn't deny God's existence. He simply doesn't like God. Though, I wonder if he would attribute his belief in bad/wrong things (like, for example: his own tragedy of being abused) because he believes God is good? I suppose that's the question in the film for his character, isn't it? He believes that God can only be powerful or he can be good. He can't be both. But, I think Superman proves Lex wrong, especially when he saves his life only to give up his own life to save the world.

duckmilkprod I guess the tragedy is that he believed a singular God to be good and would have continued to believe that beyond childhood if he didn't seemingly fail in his eyes.

Wow. I just found this channel. Ive been obsessed with the way BVS incorporates history, religion, philosophy, mythology and even cinematic references. Trust me I do not condone religion as a necessity for anyone because reality transcends anything written in the bible. Even though I still cant deny how Terrio, Snyder, Goyer, and Nolan helped built a beautiful trilogy that will stand the test of time

Bobo Boy i wasn't talking about JL, I went more BvS stuff. JL isn't a movie, it's a Hollywood embarrassment

Bobo Boy You are wrong tell me when you saw the scene of Clark in the ship did you just see it as a callback to MOS, and the moment where he became Superman again, if so than the Snyder cut will do you no good because you don't know what JL is saying what it's philosophical core is. Unlike BVS which does verbally spell out it's ideas in endless monologues and discussions (which makes sense the movie is a debate about power) JL is visual in it's ideas only giving you a few dialogue moments here and there that tell you the core, a few critical lines it's not a debate. For example after Cyborg gives his story Bruce says too much, too much life. This is important and relates to what JL is about the idea that not enough or too much of something leads to destruction. An ongoing motif in JL is characters saying not enough or too much, and often seeing the results afterwards. There wasn't enough charge from the ship to awaken the box Flash does it and it's way too much Clark springs alive with literally no recollection of who he is, like Diana said too much and you create destruction, another line that people should've taken note to. Bruce has faith in Superman way too much of it to the point that he'll make Diana his pawn to martyr himself and continue Superman's legacy, what do you think was the point of bringing up Steve Trevor and making Diana admit her guilt right before he kills himself. This relates to the idea of having too much faith which leads to fanaticism, and Bruce is definitely a board line fanatic Steppenwolf is a full blown fanatic he'll destroy entire worlds just because it's mothers will and all should be purified by her. Cyborg says a Motherbox creates as it destroys this is a line audiences probably should've took note to, as it was saying much. Steppenwolf is called back by the motherboxes heralding destruction this leads to the formation of the league. Cyborg was born the night Superman died, his creation which was likely a live video Diana was watching is almost immediately followed by Superman's death not even an hour later. Steppenwolf's first attempt to destroy Earth brought about the age of heroes afterwards his defeat and the new age eventually led to the amazonians and atlantians being forced underground. Superman's death led to Batman's rebirth. That small Russian town is destroyed by Steppenwolf and the unity only to be reborn afterwards heralding a second chance hence the plants growing. Superman goes back to heroes park where he fought Doomsday the moment that kicked off his death. When fighting the league he lifts up the head of the statue and destroys it, representing the destruction of his original self and potential rebirth as what exactly wasn't known once again the motherbox heralded this. The photo of Johnathan sinks into the water representing how he will no longer be a ghost haunting Clark that he is correcting wrongs for, regardless who he emerges as. Even the itchy line everyone dimissed had meaning. We feel an itch when our wounds are healing as the dead tissue is replaced with the newly created tissue. This is a line people dismissed as just a joke when it's true. Destruction and creation a cycle of life in endless sync. That is the point of JL it's a visual philosophical exploration of creation and destruction the cycle each plays in the concept of rebirth.
