Buzzed by the US COASTGUARD chopper! - Sailing Vessel Delos Ep. 278

Delos, Delos this is the US COAST GUARD on 16 OVER! It’s not every morning you hear the US Coastguard calling you on the radio, then doing a close fly-by when you're anchored in the middle of no where. I definitely felt nervous as Brian answered the VHF call. We’re anchored in an incredible spot and with 0kn of wind its like our house is floating in a swimming pool. Brian heads out to catch some dinner before diving head first into some boat work that involves drilling a pretty big hole in the side of the boat :)
If your in the mood for a little bit of everything good you will like this episode. Sending much love your way! XooxXo Kazza, Brian and Sierra

My parents took us every where, camping, fishing , hunting all from the time I was a wee whipper snapper. I'm now 66 and I love watching you guys with the Nugget , it's very healthy. Some of my best memories are when we went camping at our friends farm. We would arrive after dark and load all our gear in an old army douce and a half. Travel down through the pastures with horses and cattle and arrive at our campsite beside the river. My parents would set up our old army wall tent with my brothers , cover the ground with tarps and cover with a two foot bed of fir bows ,for our mattress. And we would fall asleep with the scent of pine. And cowboy songs round the campfire. Along with DDT mosquito repellent all around us. Lol , you'd never get away with that today. It was like being on Safari for two weeks in the summer. It was the greatest adventure of my life. Cheers!

So awesome. "Hello from the USCG!" Brian, you have good karma and that is evident in your videos. A great heart and something every man can strive to be. Kind, giving, caring, focused and intelligent. Looking for common ground in your fellow man rather than barriers or differences that cause a separation mentality. All the best to you and your fam and also Brady and Blue wherever they are. Hope to meet you someday and maybe sail a bit. On a note, one of the best sailing days I ever had was on a big lake in North Carolina. We met up with another sailboat ( I think it was an Oday shoal draft with centerboard) and sailed all day together. We sailed so close at times that crew were able to step back and forth from boat to boat. We had great winds all day (something that's rare in inland North Carolina). I had to break down and buy a motor boat because sailing so far inland is really hard to do. Winds are fickle and elusive. Someday I will be near the coast and will have a cruising sailboat.

These chopper crew gave me hope in humanity. It does take so little, to make one sooo happy. To the Coast Gurd crew, I compliment you all, to have the guts to act as you did. People should understand, that behind every Uniform lives a Human too. Thank you guys

@Delos, that was super cool. My friend Traveling Robert had a similar thing happen to him, but on land of course, a Florida Highway Patrol came in and lit the lights right after he had flown his drone in the Keys to get an intro shot. He was sure he was in trouble, but like what happened to you, it was just a fan that wanted to say hi. Things like this remind us all, that those who are in law enforcement and the military are still like us, that get joy and often relief from watching our favorite youtube channels. Hopefully at some time in the future you will get to meet your Coast Guard fans, even have a great interview/training video with them.

What a GREAT vlog! The water views unbelievable.... Our son is a WatchStander for the Coast Guard on the Detroit River at Belle Isle - has stories to tell.... But for the CG to recognise and say hello to you, Kazza and Nugget just made my day. Brian, your love for Kazza and Sierra is precious! Your both show the joy of a truly kindred couple. Nugget is the bonus, she's a joy to watch while her adventurous parents are going about the Delos thing! Be safe, enjoy the heater... Joe

Hi Brian, good choice on the heater, I fitted a similar one to my boat. Several tips for you. Get a carbon monoxide detector, and not one of the cheap ones. Fit remote control, that way you can start it up before you arrive after being away, also a timer for the morning start. Be careful running at low loads they soot up. Keep a spare parts onboard. You will need a solution for condensation, it gets everywhere. Anything below 10C and it's a problem. I have a fresh air circulating system which helped, but after 3 years of winters the only solution was insulation. It was a major project but I removed all the headliners and insulated behind them using 15mm aluminium backed closed cell foam the sort used on RV's. The bits I could not reach I used fireproof spec injection foam. Now we can live onboard at -10c comfortably.

What about that exhaust exit location? It will be underwater if you are really pressed when rail down or when you get hit by a cross wave.

Sorry for the newbie question, but why install so complex system and geting a hole in the hull, creating heat point inside the boat, etc... when you have plenty electricity ? Why not having electric heater everywhere you want ? is it less efficient ? Also i would have put my effort into insolation, that's the point here it seems, no ? what am i missing ???

  • @johnhayford5946

@@madjic-uc8hf A lot, firstly in winter/northern climates there is a lot less solar energy available. Even with insulation you still need a heat source, insulation just decreases the load and cuts down the condensation, and in a small space it's problem. You could add a heat exchanger to help the condensation and keep the load down, but makes it more complex. Easier to increase heater capacity and open the windows as required. It gets cold at night etc. It's not that complex, Brian has selected standard components so spares should be available worldwide.

Brian et al, would a diesel fired air heater have worked in your situation? I’m a truck driver from Canada, and we have used them during the coldest parts of winter with great comfort. I just looked and saw Webasto makes an Air Top Evo 40 that has a current draw of 4.0 kW. within a small footprint. Enjoy following your adventures and am considering purchasing a sloop class SV when I eventually return to Newfoundland to live (thus the idea of the Webasto). Cheers!

Lol, in my sailing days in the late 80s, one of my scariest moments was while on auto pilot napping on several hundred pounds of pot I was awoken by a CG chopper. I came through the companion way into the cockpit to find them right off my port side and signaling me to get on the radio. They simply wanted to know if I'd seen a ship they were looking for. I advised them I had not and off they went. Talk about pucker factor lmao. Good times
