Okay, I have a STORY. My trainer has a client who is LOADED beyond imagination. She wanted to buy a horse for herself, so she started the hunt, right? She found one that she really liked at an auction, and she went to go take a look at it. It was a 7 yo buckskin gelding. Aside from being saddlebroke, it had ZERO training, and I mean ZERO training. It was also a grade horse with no pedigree. Anyway, she rode it, and she ended up really liking it and she went to bid on it at the auction. Now, the most anyone would pay for this horse would probably be $5,000 at the most, and that's being super generous. But no. This lady had decided that she was gonna get this horse at any cost. She walked out the auction that day with the horse... at the cost of 100,000 FREAKING DOLLARS. ONE HUNDRED THOUSAND DOLLARS FOR A GRADE UNTRAINED HORSE. WHO IN THEIR RIGHT MIND WOULD DO SUCH A THING. I still can't believe it to this day.

I’ve had two experiences! The “14 year old mare” was 22, and had only been in the seller’s possession for about a week, as opposed to the years she said. The second was a “green broke” gelding who wouldn’t let anyone get up on him, or pick up his hind feet. The second was more my fault, since I rushed into getting him, but I don’t regret getting him, or selling him, because he was in a potentially bad situation where he was; he got time to rest, and learn some basics with me, and then went to a super good home with an experienced trainer. I lost a lot of money on those two scammers though 🤦🏽‍♀️

Omg. I got a Craigslist horse from a place just like this! I ended up buying her, she was in her mid 20s, in need of serious vet care, her pics were from when she was a young show horse. Still some of the best 3 years of our lives. I used her as a pasture buddy, and gave preschoolers riding lessons with her. So glad I did that. She was beloved and cherished in her twilight years💛

I went to buy my mare at night and the seller never brought her inside. He took me to a field to see a black horse at night. I bought her without seeing her. I arranged to have her delivered. My four year old started mare was, in fact, a half starved two year old filly. I still have her 3 years later. I only adopt mustangs now. At least you kinda know what you are getting

I have a story! I was looking for a paint or tb, something that could event and I saw this really cute paint but the add said $1 so I thought the seller just made a mistake so I contacted them and asked for the actual price, she said he was $3,400 as he was still very green and she needed more space. I went to go try him….in his photo, he looked like a 15h paint. When I got there I saw this chunky behemoth of a horse with his markings, turns out he’s half Friesian and his sales photo was from when he was 2. (He was 10) I love drafts but it wasn’t what I was looking for, also, his sales photo was of him jumping so they were jumping him at 2 😐. The owner was this old lady who hired a trainer to work with the horse but the trainer never came out of the loft, he just looked at me through the window. She got on the horse first and looked like this was her 3rd time riding. Before I even came out to look at him, I told her that I was looking for something that could jump. She said he’s a natural jumper with a lot of talent. He could barely get over a Cavaletti. I thanked her for her time but told her he wasn’t exactly what I was looking for but I did send his ad to my trainer because she was looking for a draft cross and he was really nice on the flat. My trainer contacted the owner and asked for his price to which the owner told her he was $23,000. This was 5 days after she told me he was $3,400

Hehe better prepare for this one... so we were about to buy a horse from a friend, I have rode this horse several times and knew him almost completely. So we get there to pick him up and they lead us to a mini field in the back where the horse was. From many many feet away I knew this was not the horse I knew. He had a black spot on his grey body and was 1 whole hand shorter! Me and my mom were furious, and this lady told us we can't have the horse we want because she doesn't want to sell him to us because she hated us. I told her I had already paid for the horse I want so either give me the horse or my money back. She refused to do either so we threatened to call the police, she gave us half the money and said if we wanted the other half were going to have to take her to Cort! We left with that and the fake horse because we felt bad about the shape that he was in... if you read this thank you sooo much Ik it is long, Gypsy if you read this please comment I am a huge fan of your work and you inspired me to get 2 of my own mustangs! Hope everything works out for you!:)

My story is a good one! We went to go see this OTTB gelding thinking that he was right off the track and needed to be restarted. I got to lead him around first, then they started to tack him up. His original owner was going to hop on him first then I would get on. Apparently they have had him for a year and had already restarted him and have been training him. We ended up buying him and now he is an amazing horse ❤

I don't really have a story but i have seen some very sketchy ads. One of them was selling a 42 year old horse and everyone in the comments was like "that horse is really really old" and the seller responded with something like "she's 42 thats middle aged" and everyone was like "i've never heard of a horse living until 42" and i think the seller thought horse age was the same as human age but it was pretty funny scrolling through the comments. On that same site there was an ad selling a horse for like 100 dollars or something. I remember another one had watermarked stock images of different horses and the person was claiming that they were the same horse and that she owned the horse. My friend said she came across that site too and she saw someone selling a Breyer toy horse as a real one. I saw lots of other weird things like made up breeds or things like that. Long story short i reported the site for fake advertising and never went back. I did see some pretty real ads on there that at least looked promising but it was way too easy to get scammed so I din't look further into any of them based on the other ones. The site is taken down now or at least i think it is (i couldn't ever find it again)

And this is why folks you watch the video that Equine Helper made not too long ago called ‘what to look for when buying your first horse’ Also rescues are (I’d say) more reliable for good horses and if the horse does have something wrong with it they’ll tell you because they want the animal too go to the best place possible (Saying that I know there are some bad rescues out there but for the most part of what I’ve seen)

Oh it's a nightmare. I lost count of the horses we went to look at that were nothing like their ads. There was one that was supposed to be 'safe' and it took two people to get the saddle on it. I didn't even bother riding that one. Then there was a lovely little dun mare which I would have liked to have bought. I rode her in the school and she went very sweetly. I said I was really interested but would like to try her on the roads and in the open. They said "oh someone has put a deposit on her but they are away on holiday". They couldn't have told me this when I first answered the ad and BEFORE I drove miles across the country and tried her out? We ended up buying one that was in a field a fifteen minute walk from my house LOL.

This didn’t happen to me but to my friends, I’ll just call them Friend 1 and Friend 2. So this was only about 1-2 years ago now, Friend 1 already had a horse but she was looking to buy another because she wanted to do more jumping and improve (the horse she had wasn’t the best jumper and had a bit of a rough past and was quite spooky, was getting a bit old -but still acted young, and she would most likely outgrow him soon, but still a good horse). Friend 2 was also looking for a horse, she found an AMAZING one, it was a great jumping and just seemed SO PERFECT, so Friend 2 said if it didn’t work out then the horse might be an option for Friend 1. So both went to see this horse. The owner wasn’t there but their friend was their. When they pulled up the house was so nice and they definitely seemed quite wealthy but when they got to the horses it definitely didn’t seem like they put much of their money toward feeding them or caring for them...they were very thin and tired, they got him tacked up and the whole time the horse was trying to get food out of a bag. I don’t remember what they said about the ride but they definitely didnt buy him. They felt terrible for the horses there and called their owner about it because it was quite concerning how neglected and starving they were, the owner screamed at them and was just plain rude. I really hope that horse got out of their and I hope that person get karma for what they did to him...some people just shouldn’t own animals. (Sorry it’s so long-)

That video was hilarious and unfortunately so true! I got a new horse 2 months ago and before I got him I went to look a a 6 year old mare. The owner assured us that she was perfectly sound and had never been lame a day in her life but when we got there she started limping the moment I started lunging her at the trot. The limp got progressively worse until she was moving like my arthritic old gelding. But according to the owner this was the first time she had ever seen her limp and it was only because of the footing.( soft mud) Please!!!

I saw an ad of a super calm paint mare so we went to see her. The owners, who clearly weren't that involved informed us when we got there that she had a bad cut on her leg and they had just found out. We decided we would at least tack her up while we were there and if she wasn't favoring her leg, possibly ride her. Well, she almost walked on top of me when I was leading her and then started getting antsy at the trailer. Once she was tacked up, my trainer went to ride her. The mare was acting kinda crazy so she tried something else. She got off and turned around and walked away from the mare, seeing if she would follow. Instead, the mare bucked and took off running in the opposite direction :/

I bought a mare in the dark, the owners said she was green-broke, a QH, a race horse, and five yo. In reality, she was a four yo half arabian half-QH who bucks every time shes loped and spooks at everything and has a giant scar on her leg that is still sensitive, shes never raced (probably), and was so caked in mud it took me 7 months to get all it off. she was the bottom of the pack and was pretty skinny even for not being worked in probably a half a year- a full year. there's more to the story but that's the bottom line. AMAZING VIDEO as always!!! so funny! and true!😂😂

Years ago, there was a woman that went around to the various horse auctions in the area and buy up everything that she could get for cheap. Within just a day or two, the horses would be up for sale on Craigslist with all kinds of made up stuff about it, good baby sitting horse, goes all day, child safe, etc. I saw some of those horses at auction that she was claiming to be child safe. I wouldn't have bought them for a kid. Many people were afraid of someone getting hurt by buying a horse from her, so her ads were constantly getting flagged. She also showed up to the local county fair with one of them. Don't recall now why, but she was kicked out.

I’d trust those online mustang auctions over some of the Amish horse sellers. Cause yeah, you never know what you’ll actually end up with. You see an amazing online add and then see the actual horse in person be 10 years older and with medical issues or sadly things wrong with their movement and legs. Same sadly goes for breeding puppies. Somehow bad sellers/breeders are allowed to continue business.

We both rode him and though he was really nice and she had a video of him jumping a 90 - 100cm course. He was also great in traffic. The lady said he had never bucked and was great to load, shoe etc. We bought him for a decent amount of money but it was a nightmare. It turns out he was on drugs when we tried him and when we got home he bronked whenever he got slightly excited and you would go flying!! Unfortunately we did not have the time to work with him so we sold home for less than half of what we bought him for and I was very sad.

There is a guy not far from me who buys and resells horses as "bomb proof." If you come to see the horse in person, he wants your credit card info and a deposit. He prefers to sell sight unseen and just deliver the horse to you. No 🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩🚩 right? Most of the horses start around $4000, and most of them look like they just came off the meat truck. I got to meet one of these rock solid horses in person after a client bought one. He was billed as a quarter horse (pretty sure he was a mustang cross), he was terrified of his own shadow and not at all a beginner horse. He was very sweet and a lovely garulla but not a $4500 horse by any means. Anyway, we tried to help him as best we could. He was better by the time we got done with him, but still not a good match for his owner, in my opinion. I always wonder whatever became of him.

I went to go look at this Appaloosa/paint cross a few weeks ago. In his ad, it stated he was a 10 year old, 15.3hh fancy-broke arena/trail horse and was fit for the show ring. Well, we went to go see him, and he was a 14hh 28 year old that had laminitis. The owners were acting super weird too, they kept insisting he was sound and 15.3hh, but he was far from that

I sold one of my mares Nova to a family with like 6 kids about 2 weeks ago and they called the other day saying she buckled the eldest daughter of but I know my horse wouldn’t just buck someone off and mom said it was probably because of the saddle so we sold them a saddle too

My sister and I were looking at horses during covid, which... terrible idea... so we were basically having to trust whatever the seller said... And WOW the amount of lying that goes on, right to your face. One guy told us that the horse he was selling hadn't seen a vet (excluding checkups/vaccs etc) for years. Luckily enough we did the thing you weren't meant to do and got the vetting done by the vet that had seen the horse before, because he told us he'd removed a sarcoid from that horse earlier in the year! And then we had people trying to downplay severe respiratory issues and melanomas because we said we weren't a showing home, so of course it's fine to ride a horse that probably shouldn't be ridden at all... Another had all these lovely videos of him being ridden (he was a youngster/3), and they said they were looking for someone to continue his education... Sounded alright, because we're not novices... This horse comes to us and has no manners, can't pick up his feet, doesn't respect boundaries/fences etc. The poor thing must have barely been handled by the looks of it. They must have stuck a saddle on him as soon as they could and called it a day. Found out the dealers had barely had him two weeks after importing him from Ireland, so they didn't even know what he was like themselves. GAH. There are definitely good people selling good horses out there... But it's certainly worth taking someone that knows what they're doing, and not just believing what the seller says... because sadly at the end of the day some people are doing just that... looking to make a sale. They don't care if it's not the right match for you, they just want the money. We ended up with a horse that cribbed (no vices ofc) and had major problems with his bridle (full on would back away, spend an hour trying to get it on him), all of which was never mentioned. But we've been working on things with him, because he's mostly a good lad. He doesn't crib any more, and goes nicely in a bitless bridle and vocal command with no fuss.

One time, I responded to an ad for a young Thoroughbred gelding. The owner said the horse had been ridden on trail a few times, and was perfectly calm on trail. I have owned several OTTBs, so I knew that some can be "arena bound" and never comfortable on trail, jigging all over the place. So I clearly stated that I wanted a horse with a temperament suitable for both arena and trail riding. I didn't care if it had no dressage training (I had a trainer) - I wanted sound, no racing injuries, and not a super hot temperament. When I got there, it looked like a facility for boarding race horses offsite from the track. The gelding was eating hay, but was tied to a wall in his stall (why?). He was handsome, and conformation looked good. Then the guy tells me that I COULD NOT RIDE THE HORSE because he was going to be raced in two weeks, and that riding him would "mess up his training." What??? I was flabbergasted at having driven such a long distance to see this horse, only to then be told that the horse was still racing. The guy acted like I should buy the horse just based on how he looked. Really??? His ad should have said "race horse for sale."

Ok so this isn’t nearly as bad as some peoples other stories but… my trainer found a horse, his name was Webster, we tried him out and LOVED him… so we bought him. His vet check was fine and everything and then the first few rides he started getting slower and slower but nothing bad, we have now had him for a year and he is literally a tortoise he is so slow and unpredictable. One lesson he was being great then he got slow and then he spooked at air or something. Like I said he was literally PERFECT when we test rode him but now he is slower that slow, he is also so strong and heavy on you hands and he over jumps EVERYTHING

When I was first looking at buying a horse a few years back we thought we found the right one but the closer it got to go see him the more excuses the owner came up with. Later on we found out he was no where sound to by and would be more expensive so the vet bills.

Me: I was looking for a horse because we were going down to a place a couple days drive from our house (I live North so not many jumping horses) one of our horses needed surgery wich is why. So I had found this 5 year old mare her name was clover, she is a pintaloosa and I talked about her so much. I finally made a decision to ask about her. I talked to my parents (I was 12) and they said yes. I put together a message and they didn’t answer. A few days later I messaged again asking about a date to go look at her. Still no answer! As I was driving down I messaged I was really interested and wanted to buy her. Still no. Answer so my mom decided to put up a Facebook add about how her 12 year old daughter is looking for a jumping horse. And then we got some people and she clearly said in the ad I was outgrowing my old pony so I was looking for a Warmblood type. People were asking about ponies and we had to keep saying no (also she said that I only had 6 k) (I payed for half of my first horse and my parents payed for half. I only had 3 k and that’s a lot for a 12 year old) so then these people are trying to sell me these 12 hh ponies for like 15 thousand so we had to say no. Then I found her. She was a beautiful chestnut tb mare, 15 years old and registered. Called the lady and bought her. 2nd best decision of my life. She acts as if she was 7 and she has northern dancer and Secrateriat in her bloodlines. Amazing horse ❤

Filly was said to not spook to jump 1,40m to be a perfect beginner horse and was 15 hands said by the owner . So the next day i went to the barn and it was 15 yr old a gelding and he was a big pony so i thought taht i already was there so i was riding him and he spooked at a shadow actually it was his shadow i tried jumping 1,20m and he stopped before the jump i almost fell off but i stayed on but after i tried again and he bolted out the arena and through me into a fence.I broke my arm and sprained my ankle.I couldn’t ride for 5 weeks but now im ok

One of worst wrecks I ever had was getting on a palomino that was supposed to be well broke and trained as a proven barrel racing horse. It was great on the ground but once on it, Green broke maybe. It was more like a rodeo horse! Broke a ladies collarbone the next day.

My grandma went to go look at a "kid safe" horse. Well it turns out you couldn't pick up his feet because it had a MAJOR kicking problem. They said that they didn't need to pick up the horses feet because they lived in a sandy area. The horse continued to act up in every way possible. As you can imagine we decided not to buy that horse. The owner then got VARY angry with us for not buying her INSANE horse. Later she put up the same advertisement for the "safe broke" horse. 🙄 Never making that mistake again.
