Buying a Cheap Porsche Boxster Vol.2 / Porsche One Year of Ownership

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

In Vol. 2 of our $7,000 Porsche Video, Blaise explains what has had to be repaired and what still needs to be repaired and what's likely to go bad on his 1999 Porsche Boxster. Through the first year and about 12,000 miles, Blaise has spent about $1,500 on repairs and is still very happy with his purchase.

I owned the same car for about 6 years now. Same mileage. Had to recon starter recently, just replaced springs and shocks, engine mounts and ventilation scoops. Thanks to you tube videos, Pelican parts, i a bit of an idiot when comes to car fixing, managed it all by myself. Now its so easy. Awesome incredible fun. If I say crap car, it would just be to avoid others from sharing the pure joy. Loads of cargo space makes for perfect daily driver. We even go on roadster camping trips.

Got my '03 Boxster S for $3000, it has 84K miles and a new top, tires, and other maintenance done. Only things Ive done so far was install a battery (reason I got it cheap as it did not start) and an oil change. It is black on black with black leather interior. It is an absolute blast to drive and am so impressed with its handling and very decent mpg as I avg 26.4 mpg currently. Enjoy!

Nice video. What I think people misunderstand is they are focusing on the number of repairs you did (to a 15 year old car, and that in spite of the reputation of every repair being $1-3k - you point out the costs have not been exorbitant. Now I want to hear about that 914, please and thank you.

Abuebakar Jallow. Brother, I have had my 1999 Boxter for a while now. Trust me. If you were to drive one you would understand. I will tell you a quick story. I went to a dealership to purchase a Jag. It was pristine. As they were getting the paperwork together my brother pointed out a Black on black Boxter. He called it a Wanna be 9-11. the sales man said, have you ever driven one? I asked for the keys. We both took turns driving it. Amazing! It handles like a magnet to metal. The moter is in the center, not the rear. You have a trunk in the front and a trunk in the rear... When you take the 6 cyl moter into the higher RPM's it becomes a beast. 100 mph happens so fast. It lives in the 135+ world. I do not believe the Jaguar would perform or could effect my senses the same way. I returned to the dealership with a changed mind and bought the Boxter. Still after a few years, when I step out of my Porsche, most of the time my pulse is racing and I'm always a little ...scared. Abuebakar check out some of Porsche Boxter V/s what ever Videos. Dude for around 8,000.00 you can own a reliable world class race car.

Here's where I am: 2004 Mazda RX-8 with a check engine light (misfire)... not saying it is apex seal failure BUUUUT I have already ruled out fuel, ignition, and clogged cats. After coming to this realization I thought back to the days when I had a Civic Del Sol, I loved the open roof experience and the relatively easy maintenance, I didn't even care that it leaked and smelled like cat piss! That is when I really dug into the Boxter, its sweeping curves could be considered pornography to some, its sound is unlike most of what is on the road, and the more I look into it, the more I can picture myself on an empty mountain pass in june with the top down and foot firmly in the gas pedal... it just speaks to me. Don't get me wrong, wringing the little rotary out to that glorious 9000 rpm redline is great fun and a pleasure, it's just it is a far younger technology and sadly, most have given up on it making ownership a bit... straining. This video tells me that for less than what I spent on my RX8 this year (about $1400 and rising), I could easily daily a Boxter. Does this seem reasonable or have I lost my mind and strayed from the church of brap?

I own a 2001 Boxster S and it’s given me nothing but problems, including being stranded on the road. The Convertible motors have stopped working, the rear window has discolored and shrunk which has pulled the convertible roof rear end out of its mounting, the AC is broken, and I need to now change the Alternator. The first time I was stranded was when all the dashboard lights went on and the engine cut out,had to change the MAF sensor then, the check engine light flashed briefly also twice. The engine cut out another time three times on the highway and I had to get the car towed.Ive also had major work done on it in the past. This car is not worth owning,it’s a bottomless money pit.

You can't go wrong with a Miata. Just as fun to drive and even catastrophic repairs are cheap compared to a Porsche.

Don't forget to replace the INTERMEDIATE SHAFT BEARINGS. When those things go, they take the whole engine with them, and a new engine is usually around $10,000 to $12,000 with installation. Replace those stock bearings with a oil-fed aftermarket alternative kit.

Honesty Counts Old man once told me... "Every time your Boxster gets up to 180 F on the dash, red line that bitch..." Keeps the IMS bearing lubricated and you won't have a problem. Drive it like an old lady and the engine blows up. who knew?

+joshua Garcia I am being 100% honest. I run 15W50 AmsOil Dominator Racing Oil while at the track and I run 0W40 Mobil1 in the off season to make sure the engine always has superior protection BUT without that REV to 7000 RPMS when at temperature, the IMS bearing in the M86 and M87 engines don't get lubricated well. Any other questions?

Patrick Barry So basically you're saying that it's necessary to rev the shit out of the Boxster every once in a while?

+iSkateBoard10 It's a typical thing on CL. 7K is about the average price now a days. I am probably going to sell my e30 for a Boxster, 944 or 914.

+Victor Pitts Find a well cared for 944 s2 and you won't regret it. Keep up to date with the timing belt and the car is otherwise bulletproof. My 1990 s2 still runs like a new car and on the track the Boxsters are all in my rear view mirror! The best build years of Porsche are '85-'95 when they were built like jet powered tanks. The 911's and the 944's from this period are as good of cars as have ever been manufactured! It's quite disappointing that Porsche knew they had problems with the engines from 1997 on, yet continued with this cheapened-up engine design until 2009. Dr. Porsche was rolling in his grave. However, if you have any DIY skills and keep on top of it a used Boxster is as big of bang for the buck as there is out there! So are the 911's of course. But if you want a newer totally trouble free car and no DIY skills perhaps the '97-''08 Porsches are not for you. Me, I'm looking for a used 911 to add even more thrills to my driving!

OMG!!!! Thats a lot of problems , my honda prelude has 180K and no problems from the start , it was built and assembled 100% in Japan , great video really makes me think twice about buying a crappy boxster from that generation

It really isn't that bad. When you get into any older European cars you are going to spend some money on maintenance and most of the cheaper cars have been somewhat neglected...that's why i always recommend buying the best car that you can afford, with all service records. Blaise is happy with his Boxster though and he has only spent about $1,500 on it in the year that he has owned it.

You may save money in maintenance. But you still have to drive a Prelude. So who is the real winner here?

Those repairs really aren't much when you figure in the cost of a set of tires and a alternator. I'm a Honda fan for life, however there's only a handful of MR cars out there and for the price the Boxster is an exceptional value.

Dude not ebay I'm 16 and I own one . I got it for 8000$ and a huge tip. Never get the z4 at your age insurance is expensive as fuck they think your gonna crash everywhere. The boxter on the other is way cheap for a 2 seater convertible.

Try Kijiji but they go up from 10 000 to 15000. It all depends what country your from. A great tip when repairing the don't go to Porsche itself it's expensive. Buy all the parts on eBay and research how to maintain the car in KZread it's way cheaper then going to a mechanic and its cheaper. I had an oil change for 24$ Canadian.

Crazyfireboy Drop out of school and get certified as a cnc operator. Takes about a year. Get your Ged. High school is a waste of time. The only thing I recommend is taking a few college level algebra and writing, and history classes. The only thing that matters in America is work experience.
