Buyer’s Guide - TOYOTA T100, TACOMA, PICKUP and 4x4 - Full Checklist!

A Subscriber suggested I do a full buyer’s guide/checklist for The Toyota T100, First generation Tacoma(same drivetrain). This also applies to the Tundra and all other Toyota Pickups and 4x4’s.. Although some tips are T100 specific, this is a general “what to look for” tutorial that will work for any quick pre purchase inspection for basically any vehicle. We do a FULL vehicle walkthrough from front to back. This is what you should do when you go to look at a vehicle for sale. Make sure you find any serious issues and problems before you drive it home!
1- Check for RUST!
2- Check for Prior repairs and body work, check all the glass to see if its original, look at the body lines, does the paint all match? Have the airbags ever deployed? Does the vehicle have a clean title? does the seller have the title? do all the doors open and close correctly?
3- Visually inspect the engine/transmission. Climb under the vehicle, is it wet from any leaks? is it actively leaking any fluids? Lift the hood and check the oil for condition and level. Quickly inspect the fluid levels of the clutch master cylinder, brake fluid reservoir, and power steering. Make sure the vehicle is cool, and then open the radiator cap and check for fluid condition and level. This is a good time to ask about prior maintenance and ask for any records if the seller has them. Its important to mention that the 5VZ-FE V6 found in the Toyota T100(1995-1998), TACOMA (1995-2004) AND THE TUNDRA (2000-2004) all require a Timing Belt replacement every 90K Miles OR 10 YEARS.
4- SMOG!! If your from a state that requires a smog certificate, make sure the vehicle has passed a smog check in the last 90 days before you purchase. If you choose to buy a vehicle and then deal with the smog check on your own, good luck to you. Let me know how it works out!
5- TEST DRIVE! Take the vehicle for a drive, how does it accelerate? how does it brake? Is the steering responsive? Keep an eye on the temperature gauge, you want the vehicle to come up to normal operating temperature, but not overheat. Run the A/C for a few minutes to confirm its cold, then check the heater. How is the alignment?, does it drive straight? does it pull to one side during braking? Listen for clunks, feel for odd vibrations, try to notice any areas of concern.
* Every car purchasing experience will be different, some sellers are friendly and welcoming and others are abrasive and rushed. Try and take your time and go over as many spots as you can to locate any potential areas of concern.
* I realized after I made the video that it is Extremely important to make sure the four wheel drive is optional on equipped vehicles. As you may or may not have noticed the 4 wheel drive shifter on our 1997 T100 sits an inch below the boot because it was never extended after the 3 inch body lift was installed(this is not my doing), but it is still fully operational. The 4 wheel drive systems on these older Toyota's are known to be very reliable. But always just shift the truck into 4 wheel drive and (you might have to drive forward a few feet) the 4WD indicator should illuminate in the gauge cluster (solid, not blinking).
Any questions or comments, leave them down below! what did i forget to mention?

Just bought a 95 SR5, trucks in excellent shape. Sat for a long time but it looks really good for an east coast truck. Even the paints still intact. My dad has a 1996 2WD and it has over 380,000 miles. Used and abused everyday for work and it just keeps on going.

I used to have the exact same truck same color in high school. I had a 4inch suspension lift with a 2inch body lift. I ran 35 inch tires. I ended up putting 5:29 gears in and a limited slip. Ow ya you have to have the front skid plate as well. There was a ton of other things I did to it. I kick myself everyday for selling it. I will get the same exact truck again but I want to put the trd supercharger and have the motor completely built. I miss that truck so much!!!!

I'd also add that when looking, it's worth it to pay a bit more to get a truck that doesn't have these things then try and save 1000$ thinking it doesn't look that bad. also it's worth it to get one that has the features you want, even if it's more money. I was looking at 4 or 5 trucks, and the only one that was rust free and had the options I wanted (sr5 trd) was 2k more then the others, but it payed itself off over the years as I never had to worry about rust or damage. I probably would have bought the truck even if it was 4k more (2010 dollars) because it lacked any of these problems, just a bit high on the mileage. but eingine was in great shape and it was loved, I could tell. Oh yeah, allot of folks take off the hood insulation instead of replacing it. I did it, it's one of those small things that doesn't impact much except some noise.

you didnt mention the splash of oil under the box that is from the seal where there rear driveshaft goes those types of leaks usually only happen then the vehicle is being driven the seal leaks, driveshaft input then sprays everywhere sometimes people when selling there vehicle will wipe off the driveshaft but the spray tells the story of the possible seal or the input shaft or more then likely both having issues many people just replace the seal which stops the leak for a while but it comes back . also dont pull on opr push the driveshafts ifif you do this and it has p-lay then ther is a major issue its best to go to the point where they are connecting and twist on either side of the shafts joints to check for play plus make sure the driveshafts are aligned if not aligned would cause vibration and possible damage later on the driveshaft on your truck is aligned . I love the older vehicles you can get at and see so many things the newer ne have covers everywhere and to get at things you have to dismantle so much to get a look at it. as for things like the cluch peddle at the top if it is a hydraulic clutch then that is normal the old school clutches if the peddle releases at the top then there is an issue

Your correct to be skeptical of Craigslist sales, but usually you can just tell a lot from the pictures and from the wording of the Craigslist ad. If they say unusual stuff, or anything seems odd, i immediately pass. But i will call the person and just have a conversation and usually you can tell if they know a lot about the vehicle and just sound like a normal person.. If anything seems off, just move on.. There is a lot of bad stuff out there, but there is also a lot of really legitimate vehicles and cool people, just gotta take your time.. 👍🏼

If it’s a super great price, go for it.. but it could get expensive to repair or replace the transfer case.. might want to just keep looking for another, especially if you plan on using the 4wheel drive..

Hi, I have a 96 t100 4x4 last year I was getting some unusual wear on my front pass tire and took it to a shop. I replaced upper and lower control arms on both sides, ball joints, tie rods, and inner and outer axels but now it's noticeably lower in the front than in rear and very bouncy for some reason the torsion adjusting screws won't raise my front end. both lower control arms matched up to oem any idea how i could stop the bounce and raise my truck back up

How many miles are on the truck? It would be nice to just start over and put a 5 inch superlift suspension kit on it.. but for a lot cheaper you could just try these out.. www.ebay.com/itm/234577088620?mkcid=16&mkevt=1&mkrid=711-127632-2357-0&ssspo=2a37clFFR66&sssrc=2349624&ssuid=7znpTDOfTJ-&var=&widget_ver=artemis&media=COPY www.sdtrucksprings.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=31995&srsltid=AdGWZVQqEVoI0_P9rCBWXtFghIRHck0BxHW1JfJs63JKAgpukZ8IS3hLkeI

I have a 95 T100 that I bought brand new and the engine bay is not black. My truck is red and so is the engine bay. I have seen plenty of T100s and I have never seen any painted black except if the truck was painted black too. So somebody painted your engine bay because it's not stock paint.
