What gets me is how damn big modern trucks are with similar capacity. I saw a 90s f250 and it wasnt much bigger than a modern f150 with less capacity.

1) Most trucks were on decades old platforms in the 90s because there was no competition. GM changed in 88, Dodge in 93, and Ford in 97. Toyota was playing catch-up because they had no full-size trucks. The T-100 was their first effort.. but it was still no full size. Not until the Tundra.. which incidentally is now far older than all of the American trucks. 2) Light duty and heavy duty trucks use to be built on the same chassis. The only differences are things like tire sizes and ratings, springs, shocks, brakes, transmissions, engines, etc. Ford decided to make the Superduty in 1999 after two years of making the F-250 on the curvy 1997 platform. Partly to expand its capacities, partly to appeal to people who wanted a more “manly” looking truck, and partly to make the 1/2s lighter and more user friendly. Other manufacturers still use the same platforms.. but they are more differentiated with things like independent front suspension vs solid axles and availability of diesels vs gas etc.

@C G my dad has a black 1997 T100 dual cab with only 107k miles. The paint is in really good condition for the years. Besides the rust on the fenders. The interior is in good condition as well. I'm hoping he'll sell it to me when I turn 16. It's the best one within a 200-mile radius for sure.

T100s are amazing trucks, I use one at work doing forestry clearing along with my 4Runner. Outstanding chassis for off road. Ironic how these trucks didn't sell well, but now everybody wants one.

@@sonnymendoza9654 Actually had a Ram 1500 and thought the interior and exterior was quite pleasing. It was the transmission recall, failing heater core, and gas mileage as bad as a 2500 truck.

I have a friend who purchased a new Toyota T100 Extended Cab in 1995 and still drive currently everyday

Boy ever did they build a V8. Of all the trucks in our fleet, ReStore 6 is a 2007 Toyota Tundra and us it's pushing 400,000 miles and still, tows every single day! Hands down, one of the best trucks on the road!

Funny how he ignores the fact that Toyota was already building a V-8 at the time. It was in the Lexus. And a version of that engine is exactly what went in the later tundra. One reason the truck was so expensive, because then, as now, there is a 25% tariff assessed on all imported pickup trucks. Which is why there aren't any in the United States now

The 4.7 in my sequoia was awesome, I miss that truck, I didn't need a fullsize anymore and missed shifting gears so it went for a 20 civic si, I tell my girlfriend she needs a tundra because I miss the sequoia errgh a pile of money can fix this

It's about time. I wonder why they only released this yesterday. 🤔 I've had my 1997 T100 Xtra Cab 4x4 for 5 years now. Finally just found a shell for the back that, a former T100 owner flagged me down in the street to offer to me for $50. My channel is filled with videos of my truck. I will NEVER get rid of that truck. The thing is bulletproof. *_OH WHAT A FEELING! TOYOTA!_*

You could tell that younger guy test driving it was having a lot of fun lmao. Can't help but smile with a light snappy truck and a 5 speed.

My dad bought a 1993 T100 regular cab long bed new as a dealer leftover in 1994. The chicken tax really hurt sales and the dealership was happy to put cash on the hood to move it. He kept it until 2019 with about 330,000 miles on it. Other than being on its 3rd or 4th set of head gaskets it was pretty reliable. I learned how to drive in it lol.

Xavier Parrish - You mean the 3.4L QuadCam V6? That was the engine "H-100's" * were upgraded to soon enough... * the whole production of the T-100 (as well as the FJ Cruiser) were made at a Hino truck factory, rather than a Toyota car one in Japan.

@@dave3682 - so far there's the Santa Cruz and the Maverick. The latter being the one that will have the "mass appeal". Besides another one (I've always stated FCA [now Stellantis] could Americanize the Renegade-based Ram 1000*) and sell quite a bit of them here) I don't see much more room for those here... * FCA even made a Jeep prototype version for the Moab event in 2019

@@syxepop These new trucklettes aren't going after the traditional pickup market, though, which is why I think they have a chance at being successful. The Santa Crux is being marketed as a crossover SUV with an open-air bed in place of a trunk. Hyundai themselves have said that the Santa Cruz will be a vehicle for people who enjoy the day to day versatility of a crossover SUV, but would appreciate the utility of an open-air bed. The idea is that you're going to walk into a Hyundai dealership looking for a Tucson, and the salesman will reply "Of course sir/madam, would you like your Tucson with a trunk or a cargo bed?". Hyundai expects to sell between 50-70k a year. As for the Maverick, Ford is going after testosterone-filled young men. The idea being that any guy in his 20-early 30s would much rather drive a pickup truck (or even something that looks like one) than something like a Nissan Sentra... but he can't afford a new pickup so he settles for the sedan. This is why Ford is targeting an MSRP at or just below $20,000. Ford expects to sell 100,000 a year. If they are done right, I think tiny pickups are going to be the next big thing, they are going to explode just like tiny SUVs did and every manufacturer is going to scramble to bring one of their own to the market. They will live and die on their marketing, though. If you advertise these as pickup trucks, or, heaven forbid, midsize pickup trucks, they will fail as they aren't very impressive as straight-up pickup trucks. However, If you really push the idea that these are really just crossovers with a pickup bed instead of a trunk, and that they are intended to compete with the crossovers that they are based on and not real pickup trucks, then they will do well.

@@dave3682 - as you've stated these are NOT GOING AFTER THE AVERAGE PICKUP BUYER, as these won't have the towing or payload levels they "want" (there's a surprising number of 'poseurs" in pickup trucks out there). Besides those groups you mention, another group Ford is wanting to lure is those small (mostly individual-owned) businesses that generated sales for the Transit Connect. Those that cant afford a new workhorse F-150* and doesn't need towing and a sub-1400lb. payload (the original small truck crowd). * buying a used pickup truck is A DICIER PROPOSITION than a used car as almost all are either TOO NEW AND EXPENSIVE or TOO JUNKED OUT when they reach the used vehicle market

I love my T100 Its 98 with the 3.4 motor with 215,000 miles on it and still going strong

I always thought these would of made more sense with one of their straight sixes as an engine option.

That’s what I was thinking, Like why not use their 1FZ-FE i6 that they used in the land cruiser at the time? Much more powerful and reliable than the crap 3VZ-E V6 that it came out with at the time. But at least they replaced it with the far superior 5VZ-FE a couple years later.

The 1FZ is huge, terrible on gas, and not that reliable. Definitely not one of Toyota’s better engines. There’s a reason it was only used for a few years, 1994-1997. Source: I own an FZJ80

A nice 2JZ-GTE would have done this truck just fine. Retune the turbos, profile the cams for low end grunt, and this truck would've put all American trucks in their place...way behind.

I had a 82 Toyota Pick up 2WD 5-speed & that great 22-R Engine. I wish I would have kept it. It was a very reliable truck.

I have a 93. 4x4, 5 speed manual. 180k miles. Ultra reliable and great off road.

This is basically the long bed Tacoma now.

It's actually a fair bit smaller than the current standard-length (i.e. extended cab - which is longbed only - and shortbed crew cab) Tacoma: 5.6" shorter wheelbase, 3.2" shorter overall, but width is identical.

Sure it was. It’s not a real truck. Mah truck is a real truck! Even though it only has a 5.5 foot bed with a tonneau cover and never leaves pavement or tows anything.

I have a 93 that my dad bought new Base model 2wd 5speed 337k miles later it’s never been taken apart or on the back of a tow truck Best vehicle we have ever owned He paid 13k for it and we have been offered up to 4K Never getting rid of it

And these are still on the road!!! Toyota quality.

These were much better trucks during their later years (1995-1998). An extended cab version was finally offered and the 3.4L V6 was much more reliable than the 3.0, which had a very un-Toyota-like appetite for head gaskets. Still, all M.Y.s of the T-100 are worth a look. I had a chance to buy a '97 T-100 5-speed 4WD a few years ago. I'm still kicking myself for not taking it home.

The 7M ate head gaskets for breakfast as well. Many Toyota engines had problems with head gaskets.

@@basshead. - IIRC, The 7M’s problems stemmed from improperly torqued head bolts from the factory while the 3VZ-E’s gasket material was just pure crap. At least a recall was issued for the 3VZ-E's defective head gaskets and many were replaced for free.

And Yes, you'll still see one of these on the road every now and then. Really amazing...!

Owned 5 of these, 3.4 was a far superior to the headgasket killing 3.0....Great trucks

I have to give props to Toyota where they still put in naturally aspirated and port injected engines in their vehicles in comparison to other manufacturers who put in more turbo charged direct injected engines.

Rumor is the next generation Tundra will not have the 5.7L. Instead a turbo V6. I certainly hope that is not the case. Would much rather have the dependable V8.

@@jeffsfleet unfortunately Toyota will still have to conform to modern emissions regulations. But if anyone can make a reliable turbocharged V6 it’d be Toyota. I seem to remember a certain reliable twin turbocharged inline six they made a couple decades ago...

@@jeffsfleet If Toyota AT LEAST have the option of either having the naturally aspirated V8 or turbocharged V6, that would be okay. I do not dislike turbo engines, but I just personally prefer larger naturally aspirates engines.

The extended cab model has a 6 foot 4 inch bed length so it can't carry 4x8 foot boards with the tailgate up. One thing Mr. Davis couldn't include in his pre-Internet review was that T100s were made to last without needing expensive repairs, so they can go 250k miles and more making them usable to this day.

I had both the Tacoma and then traded up to this T100 when they came out. If memory serves me correctly the sticker was $18k and paid $16k. Back when we didn’t give a crap about 0-60 and hp and didn’t need the car/truck to drive for us which would now make this T100 sticker for $35-40k

You have to take inflation into account. $18,000 in 1993 money is worth $32,416 today. Pickup trucks today are better buys today than they ever have been because their prices have barely increased compared to trucks from 30 years ago while their standard features, tech, safety, and capability have skyrocketed compared to those same trucks from 30 years ago. Also, when you take into account that loan APRs have been halved since the 1990s, the already small price gap between old trucks and new trucks shrinks even more.

Adjusted for inflation, that's nearly $33,000, which is more than the base price of many modern trucks, which come with all the features you're complaining about. So, in reality, you're getting more today for less money.

Didn't vanish where I live. I see two or three a day out here in poorsville, USA. These trucks might just live forever.

We have a 96 T-100. With almost 400,000 miles on it. We bought it at an auction with a destroyed bed. So we put a custom bed on and it’s way more durable. We used it as a work truck to deliver parts, but we got a 1991 Toyota 1-Ton and that’s our new work truck. It’s sad to see the T-100 go, because it was my childhood truck. 😭 I love the 3.4L engines, they sound amazing!

My MIL bought a 94 T100, pretty base with a rubber floor mat, with the 2.7 four and 5-speed. It's a rough beat up old farm truck now, there's not a undented body panel, but she still has it and it's still going, although it not a daily anymore.

I still have a 91 single cab pickup. the seating really only allows for 2 people. If there's 3 people in it, the driver has to elbow the middle guy every turn

I got a 95 DX Extra cab , 5speed . lots of room in it. I cant even reach the other side door to role the damn window up without sitting in the middle. 4 people can get in it. But the back seats sit a little low.

It's weird I'm buying one this week. Manual 4x4 and I'm excited as hell! The most indestructible truck in the planet. Even the Top Gear knows that.

He was right when he said “Toyota was certainly capable of building a V8 on their own”. The legendary 4.7, 4.6, and the 5.7 beast are all proof.

Ahhh yes the humble beginnings of the T1000, no wonder if could not be destroyed. It all makes sense.

My buddy had a '94, 4x4 with a 5 speed in emerald green. Man that was a sweet truck. He STILL talks about it to this day and is very regretful for selling it. I still hold on to my 1994 Toyota pickup, the 22RE has 210k miles on it, still going strong.

After people started putting offer notes on my T100, I started using a pedal lock.

I still have my dad's 94 DX. 3.0 V6, RWD, manual trans. Only 150k on it, but life in Pennsylvania is killing the body. Frame is s solid though.

I grew up with a black T100 truck was so cool, once i was able to drive it, such smooth ride im glad the tundra feels the same way!

My 1997 Toyota T 100 was (is) a transportation miracle. 4 cylinder A/C automatic...no center console, fun ! 140,000 miles and flawless original drive-train bow-to-stern when I donated the vehicle to Habitat for Humanity. Original rear brake pads on rear wheels with equivalent 56 trips around the Earth ! Cassette player ! Toyota also sent me a check for $1000.oo cash with a voucher requested upon purchase of a new Toyota TUNDRA truck.

The v8 for the time was put into the Lexus LS models. It was an amazing engine(still is) it was extremely stout and ran like butter. Toyota/lexis was competing with Mercedes Benz and bmw and Toyota’s v8 blew their engines out of the water. Over engineered the hell out of that engine.

Why can't they make it this size anymore? Today's full size truck is a size of a house.

They can. They just choose not to, because those big ol trucks they sell now hit $60k+, even more with the toyota tax. Can't pass up a profit like that to make a niche truck that only workers buy. Nobody realizes the importance of a working mans truck.

Tacoma long bed is similar in dimensions to this. Except the bed is a little shorter in the Tacoma.

I had 96 Extra Cab T100 with the 3.4 and auto trans. Fully loaded too. I loved that truck. It had plenty of power and was so comfy to drive. I miss it

Need to bring the mini trucks back, so much more practical for a lot of us

Dude, I sold my 2000 Ranger in the summer and got a newer truck. I miss that thing. Simple, 24MPG and no need to worry about heated seats or infotainment breaking. That was a real truck.

This isn't really mini. Its basically the same size of a modern Tacoma if you lift it.

I have a 93 4x4 5-speed with 160,000 miles. Everything still works as it should. I guess these are becoming collector items now.:) The Yen was very weak at the time so the price was high. Mine has had the head gasket re-call done.

Vo6 recall! They had gaskets on upside down. I remember I started to work at Toyota in summer of 98 and they just did that recall on all v6 engines.

The cost was due to the chicken tax imposed on imports at the time. The U.S. tarrif on import trucks was verry high

I have a fully new painted pearl white 96 t-100. I couldn't believe it was a 90's truck.. With updated tires & off-road weels or rims it looked like an 08, 09 vehicle to me. Just got new shiny stock grille & its my favorite truck so far. 😎👍

John forgot to mention about the manual transmission shifting feel and absence of voltage gauge. Shook my head.

A close cousin to my mid-sized 2010 Toyota Tacoma V6, I always enjoy seeing T100's on the road. It gives me hope that my Tacoma will live a long, happy life.

Ontario Canada especially is horrible when it comes to rust. There are literally Toyotas and Hondas that are barely over a decade old sent to the scrapyard. But not because of the engines. It’s just eventually they get so rusted out and eventually too expensive to repair.

@@asdfghjqwertyu1858 Anyone in Canada who is too lazy to get their car rustproofed deserves all the rust they get. My 2005 Toyota built car has had 16 annual visits to Krown Rustproofing and the body is a good as the day it left the factory.

I just bought a 5 speed1995 T100 Extra Cab DX 2W Drive this summer. It has 305,000 miles on it now. Body was in good shape so i parked it for the winter. It is Michigan. I like driving it ,but should have the small V8 in it , there is room. Has the big cab feel inside , but has a strangly high floor pan to make for higher ground clearance i guess. Drove it all summer after changing the oil. Only had a leaking brakeline on the rear passenger side b4 i parked it. Bought a prefab line and the fittings were the same. Also had to buy a bulb socket 4 a 2014 camery to replace a missing marking light socket on the front driver side. It was a match.

Had one with 300,000 miles and still won't break a sweat.

Just rolled 305,000 this summer B4 i parked my 95 DX Extra Cab for the winter. The only thing that can kill one of these trucks is the exposure to the elements. A friend of mine had to junk 2 that the transmission mounts rusted away, but they kept running .

The Toyota T100 was the last trucks built in Japan.They were really like a Ford ranger exept they last for 30 to 40 years...My T100 has around 700 k miles and is my daily driver to work still...Its the only vehicle i have out of 4 that never lets me down....As long As Your do Your regular maintenance they are almost bullet proof. The older Toyotas are why people understand reliability.

I drive a first gen tundra and park directly across from a t100 in my apartment complex. its cool to see the difference between the generations.

I had a 95 for 25 yrs...260k miles..I just sold it & got a first gen Tundra

The whole point of a pickup truck is the bed. Today the bed is an afterthought at best; a full sedan for the cabin takes precedence, and the best you can hope for is just a small backseat that still eats into the bed size. Can I just get a solid pickup truck with an actually usefully sized bed, and not have to have spacious seating for four in the cab, ffs? No, apparently not. Apparently I need a Caprice for seating and a postage stamp for cargo.

Yeah. You can't hang any steps or unnecessary fog lamps from the bed.

These were such solid and underrated light pickups that had larger capacity without sacrificing economy! These T100s are just so dang good! Again, from my birth decade: the 1990s!! :)

I drive a 96 T100 SR5 4x4 Extended cab and I love it. 240+ k miles on it and it still runs like new.

*I'd like to see a person put a box like that in the bed of a 4x4 pickup today..* 😂🤣

The problem is morons putting giant lifts on them. Most trucks are still reasonable at stock height

Wow, look how spacious that engine bay is.

The T100 is the best pickup made. With the 3RZ 2.7 or V6 3.4 and a manual transmission they’ll go everywhere anywhere without asking questions.

I remember back in 96 when my brother took us down to the convention center where toyota populated the parking lot full of new toyotas. We went and looked at T100s as my brother was looking at getting one. They had a row of 30 trucks lined up and we sat and looked at every single one. They also had two Supra Turbos parked at the front which looked freaken amazing. They wouldn't let us look at them though

Paved the way for the Tundra.

I had a 1995, I sold it with 270k miles....It's still on the road 10+ years later. The gardener still has is! who knows how many miles it has now.

dad had a 95 ext cab T100 SR5 when I was a teen. Bulletproof and the V6 had plenty of power. Great truck. He went on to buy 2 Tundras later.

Drove one once with the 5 speed. It had no balls & seemed like the gas pedal didn’t even work

Well. I own a 93 T100 single cab long bed and few of the features i honestly didn't know existed like the 2 row storage set up.

The T100 is, as far as I'm concerned, still one of the top two or three best looking pickups of all time.

This very vehicle is still on the road.

Any of these tests available for the 2001-2007 Toyota Sequoia or 2000-2004 Toyota Avalon?

My neighbor’s T-100 is still going strong after two engines and three transmissions.
