    It’s not even a good deal. For that price you can get a Lenovo Legion 5 with a Ryzen 7 4800H and an RTX2060 with 16gb of ram and have money left over to throw 32gb of ram and a bigger/second SSD into it if you wanted to. It’s not even that much thicker surprisingly because it’s a Lenovo. I use one as my daily driver AND my gaming PC. Just buy that. Hell there’s even an optional 80whr battery. I just don’t understand their recommendations sometimes.

    Owning a HP Envy x360, I have to say that I love the dedicated buttons to kill my mic and webcam on the HP line. Actually this would (since I have this one) maybe be a feature I would be looking at when I would upgrade the laptop in a few years. I value privacy, and knowing for sure (at least for the laptop) that my webcam is not visible, due to the plastic that is moved in front of it, makes me a lot more comfortable. Thus would personally recommend other companies to do that as well for the people like me.

    A lot of these new premium intel ultrabooks now come with a bios and/or software setting to change them from "balanced" mode to "performance" mode. For example, new lenovo ultrabooks do this even directly via their "Lenovo Vantage" app on Windows 10. They come configured to "balanced" or "silent" mode by default. At this mode, the cpu never goes above 60-65ºC, and never fully turbo-boosts, to try and keep the pc cool to the touch and as silent as possible (work laptops). But if you change this to "Performance" the cpu can actually go up to 95-100ºC at max (it won't, but the BIOS will let the cpu boost as much as he want's up to that temperature instead of 65ºC) which makes the fan go much louder but also cool it better which leaves room for the intel cpu to turbo-boost a lot. Source: I had in my hands a brand new Lenovo Thinkbook that done this. Got ~2100 at cinebench, but was unusually quiet and cool (exactly what he noticed with this laptop at 8:02) but after finding this option and switching it to performance mode, the fans ramp up at the score on cinebench got to ~4500 with an i7-10510U. The way this HP is keeping the fans quiet to the point that even he noticed it, just confirms that this laptop is in fact at some type of silent mode. I've seen HP also do this with their Envy and Spectre laptops. I hope the LinusTechTips team learns this and stops trashing these laptops cpu performance just because they don't know they are in silent mode. Intel CPUs are bad, but not THAT bad... EDIT: yes it's confirmed, HP does this too, and this video was 100% sure using the "Balanced" default mode. The app they use is HP Command Center. Go there and switch to performance mode. 😉

    I have an HP Envy 14 with the i7 and 1 TB SSD, and I absolutely love it. It's such a great allrounder for music, web, graphics, the occasional game and even video editing on the go. I love the design, and the ports (no dongle madness there). I am even thinking about getting a second one (with lower specs), because when I travel I always like to have a spare laptop and power supply with me.

  • @AlexMoffatPrime
    @AlexMoffatPrime3 жыл бұрын

    I ordered this laptop after watching and reading some other reviews this week. I was also heavily considering the Razer Book 13, Spectre, and XPS. Here's why I pulled the trigger on the Envy 14: * Relatively slim form-factor that I could actually put in my bag and use on-the-go. (Not super bulky or heavy like other competitors in this price range and screen size.) * The 1650 Ti seems like an upgrade to medium/high gaming compared to light gaming with an Iris Xe integrated GPU. (Wins against most competitors in this price range.) This should carry me for a while before getting an eGPU when the current gen GPU stocking issues calm down, whenever that is. * Port selection is above average compared to others in this size (or 13 inch). I was looking at some of the XPS options and the lack of even one USB-A is a deal-breaker. * I wouldn't feel embarrassed when using this in a professional environment. * The build quality has been reviewed pretty highly. The other laptop I was looking at is the Razer Book 13, but I've been assured that the build quality is not noticeably better there to justify the cost w/o a dedicated GPU. I'm still a little worried about whether the lid will have an overbite or underbite, but since I customized my config I won't know for a month if it's good. * Great reviews about the screen. 400 nits seems like a pretty good sweet-spot for this category. * 16:10 display ratio. I won't consider 16:9 for anything that I want to be able to use for productivity (web, photos, docs, coding, etc.) * I don't want a touch laptop or 2-in-1 design (might as well get a separate Chromebook for that and Android apps), so I'm happy to save a few bucks here. * I can still charge with USB-C, but of course because of the specs for USB-C I won't be able to deliver enough power when it's at full utilization. I'm not worried about this since I don't plan to game or compile with it on-the-go. Now, some things I'm less stoked about: * No Windows Hello. I haven't had this feature before, but at least it has a fingerprint reader, which I hope will make up for it. * No expandable RAM. But I really don't see 16GB being much of a limitation for me anyway. * Only one M.2 slot. I got the base 256GB drive, since even just upgrading to 512GB was a stupid price. Would have preferred two slots, but I'll take the hit for cost savings. * I wish webcams would be better in 2021 all around. I don't really anticipate using it alot, but who knows what the next few years will bring? * I've been totally f-ed before by Nvidia knowingly including faulty GPU packaging, so the laptops would overheat and damage other components.Taking a risk by giving them a chance here. * Going to take a month to ship (I assume since I did a custom config to i7, 1650 Ti, 16GB RAM, matte non-touch screen, 256GB M.2.)

    @@mlucproduction1239 I'm really happy with it. It took me few days to get back to you because I wanted to replace my 256GB base M.2 SSD with a 1TB upgrade I bought (SK hynix Gold P31, on sale thru Amazon for $114). I can say the procedure went pretty smoothly once I realized that HP's own service manual was inaccurate about which screw driver was needed to remove the bottom panel. Search for HP's service video for accurate information (it's a Torx T5, BTW). It also gives the steps specifically for the M.2 replacement. If anyone is interested more about the software I had to use please let me know and I'll fill you in, don't want to spend too much time on this here. Anyway, I'm very happy I didn't spend the money on a higher capacity SSD from the factory. I've found that doing some gaming with the 1650Ti has been pretty great. Haven't done a ton. Firewatch, Civ VI, Halo 1 MCC, CD:GO. So nothing TOO intense. Never felt like the Envy 14 was holding me back. The fans at full volume aren't that bad, definitely shouldn't be a problem with headphones on. So I have a pretty aggressive fan curve to keep everything cool in order to extend the life of my components (had bad luck with Nvidia cards breaking down in the past). The port selection has been great, especially switching between my work computer and this one at my desk. I'm using a Targus dock that charges, drives 2 monitors, ethernet, and a TON of USB devices and it hasn't had a problem with the load. Ok, so enough of the great stuff. I do have just one complaint, and it's pretty minor, and maybe something I can fix myself with some lube. When I open and close the laptop it sort of creaks? Instead of being totally smooth the hinges seem to have a little too much friction and makes an audible noise at the start of any movement. Once it gets going it's not a problem, but it does cheapen the whole experience slightly. If you have specific questions about anything I mentioned above or anything I didn't then please shoot them at me and I'll be happy to answer them!

I'm totally in the same boat, but hoping I can plunk down my money for an AMD/TB system within a year from now at the latest. Not really looking to go the route of proprietary e-GPU setups like the Asus ultrabook we've seen on LTT recently, either. Not everyone uses all the ports all the time, and I think having less ports does drive the cost down. Whether you save any real money buying something with less ports idk for sure..

    No, it's actually "Inte", which is Intel's newest brand of low power laptop chips. There's no "l" at the end because it's budget, and they couldn't afford to add an "l".

    Just wait for sale and be ready to grab it with i7 for around $1000. HP seems to have those quite often, yet I would still love to see AMD based machine, at least for envy lineup.

    How's the speaker compared to xps13 n 15? Currently owned envy13 from 2018 (8th gen Intel), the speaker is tiny and awful. Even Tab S7 sounds way way better. Feedback on speaker comparisons is much appreciated!

    Thunderbolt is enough to still guy an Intell processor. Ryzen is a better CPU hands down, but connectivity is important, especially with a laptop.

    That was my first reaction as well, but check the video from "Just Josh". This laptop has great thermals and this i5 runs at boost speeds continuously, catching up with a typical i7 or even Ryzen 5.
