Buy Or Hold? The New Lexus GX550 May Have Some Problems
The GX550 uses the same twin-turbo V6 engine as the Toyota Tundra engine now under NHTSA recall. Is the GX550 a risk? You decide.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) released an official report on the Tundra/LX600 Toyota/Lexus Twin Turbo V6 (V35A) engine failures.

Finally a SENSIBLE video from an auto KZreadr! 🙄 You hit the nail on its head! Toyota/Lexus essentially sell RELIABILITY, DURABILITY and LONGEVITY. And for many of us rabidly loyal Toyota buyers, it is the Holy Grail of our automotive purchases! I, personally do NOT like Toyotas and Lexuses for MANY reasons, and would not touch many of their models with a ten foot pole, *_if it were not for their quality, reliability, durability and longevity!!!_* Despite me not liking MANY aspects of Toyota/Lexus vehicles, they are all I have bought for the last TWO AND A HALF decades, for the aforementioned reasons! And I’m sure there are TONS of people exactly like me! I now have zero reason to go with a Toyota! Now, of course, there are still _SOME_ models like the Corolla and Camry, which are most likely still good in terms of their reliability and durability. But what if you’re not in the market for those particular segments of the market? I would not touch that Highlander with the turbo-4 with a ten foot pole! The hybrid version is most likely OK, though!

This, 100%. If there isnt reliability then what is there? Most Toyota's I have driven(cough, the 4th gen Tacoma, cough) are extremely ho-hum. Honestly, for daily driving, my GX460 was extremely mediocre. That said, I do think the GX and the Land Cruiser/LX570/LX600 did fit into a very weird niche that really no other vehicles have filled and are why I have owned them. They can all offroad decently and they can all tow. I think this applies more to the GX550 specifically, as my GX460 was only ok at towing. It could do it but was not great. My new to me LX570 tows fantastic and still offroads just as well as the GX. There are plenty of vehicles that can offroad, plenty that can tow, but not many that can do both decently.

@@Jay-me7gw Yes, you’re right! I was going to buy the GX 550, either next year or in 2026. I was very excited about that vehicle, but now I’ve decided I will not touch it with a ten foot pole. I feel like I dodged a BIG BULL LET! I will now look for a low-mileage one-owner well maintained late model GX 460 instead. As you said it’s boring and lackluster as they come, but I still worship it for its insane RELIABILITY, DURABILITY and LONGEVITY!! A vehicle is a very expensive investment (at least for those of us who value our hard earned money! 🙄 - many people don’t, but that’s a discussion for another day! ), and you don’t want to feel violated when making the 2nd most expensive purchase after a home!

You would have to be delusional to think that these new Turbo engines will last “20 years” like the old NA V8s and V6s did! 😂 A couple years ago, I saw the “million mile Tundra” with the V8, and Toyota was very eager to look at that vehicle. And I thought to myself, yeah, right! 😂 You thought to yourself, geez, did we really build this vehicle so well? We made a big mistake, let’s see how we can cut some corners, save ourselves some money and see how we can build a lower quality vehicle that does not last _THIS_ long!

@@chibbyylol correct. Everyone fears turbos, but lacks actual knowledge as to how engines handle pressures or high RPMs. just because youre increasing pressure doesn't automatically mean you're going to blow a head gascket. If the engine is designed right a turbo engine can actually outlast a naturaly aspirated engine. There's different grades of steel and other alloys that can be used to strengthen engines as well as a slight increase in wall thickness of the cylinder jackets can also help increasereliability. from everything that I've seen regarding the new toyota v6 issue seems to be more of a manufacturing process and a lack of quality control rather than a design issue. If the process is imrpoved and quality control issues rectified, then we should see in a few more years from now if they will be reliable engines or not.
