Butterfly Leaf Dining Table 8 - Cutting, Sizing and Framing the top

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

In this video, I cut the three pieces that make up the top that totals 8' when fully expanded. I also show how to install the butterfly hinges for the folding extension. Then I cut corners off and prepare the lumber for the solid wood frame along with making a solid "inlay" detail around the entire top.
As always, I welcome your questions and comments!

Guy: It looks like you have already got a lot of comments. First you did a great job with the barrel hinges and I am glad you used four hinges. That will give you plenty of strength. As far as the banding that looks great and I like it. It just enough contrast to make the top stand out and be the focal point of the table. Now to the splines, I am for the walnut and flush. The reason is two fold. One you want people looking at the beautiful top. Only the woodworkers will be looking at the frame unless you point it out. Secondly, sometimes keeping it clean and simple make for a more beautiful piece. Great job Guy.

+Csbinet Maker Thanks for the kudos! I agree with what you're saying, however my concern has always been that the end grain will draw your eyes to the spline, so impossible to hide completely. That's why I'm leaning toward a complementing wood rather than a contrasting wood. Like cherry or walnut

This table is coming along beautifully. I cannot wait until it is completed! I read that you were going to make different samples before you make your decision. That is a great idea! I could be curious to see what this table would look like with ebony splines on the corners. Like you said in one of the comments, I think it would be complementary instead of contrasting. I love your videos, Guy. Keep up the great work!!

Looks good Guy. I tend to agree with some of the previous comments. The faux inlay is already giving it enough contrast, Some cherry in the corners would give it just enough to expose the joint while not creating clutter. I like the ebony idea as well. I think that a dark contrast on the corners vs the light / dark on top could make it look very nice. Happy New Year!

Beautiful work as always Guy. I am always impressed by your planning of a project and your preparation before you make your cuts, something I have to work on. As to the splines, personally, I would use walnut and try to match the grain as closely as possible. I think the contrast you have with the maple "inlay" really is enough for the project and a maple spline would start to make the piece look busy. An ebony spline would be better than maple, but I still think walnut would be better. To my mind, you want to enhance the beauty of the wood and the craftsmanship that went into building the table. Emphasizing the spline seems to be drawing attention to a structural reinforcement of the joint. I would rather people wonder how you were able to make such a strong joint without visible reinforcement.

Beautiful top Guy - Keeping in mind the splines are going to be very noticeable I would go with the G & G, the black will not jump out but will creating a great accent that will not take away from the inlay look of the top. It will just add another level of appeal to the table separate to itself.

Beautiful build Guy. If you used a contrasting wood for the spline, I believe it might distract from the maple banding you have on the top. You might cut several pieces of spline of various woods and temporarily place them in the piece and see which one you like and go with the look you want to achieve.

Superb work!A walnut spline would seem an obvious choice however, when glued in place and finished, I suspect only the dark end grain of the spline would show which could look a little odd. There would be colour differences between the end and side grain if maple or cherry was used, so I think I would go for ebony. I would suggest making up some samples and give them a coat of polish and then try them in place. If all else fails, ask the wife - they always know best.

Nice job. If you are going to use contrasting wood I'ld use the maple to match the rim. Do you plan on making chairs or another piece of furniture to go along with the table? If you are, the maple would be the wood accent to tie it all together. Beautiful table, the finish will make it sing. Do you use lacquer? 10 coats of lacquer applied by gun of course and buffed out. Sick finish. Whatever you choose I'm sure it will be a knock-out. Been waiting for this video, it didn't disappoint. Thank You.

GuysWoodshop The thought of end grain hadn't crossed my mind. If that is a concern then perhaps ebony. On my Blacker House chair I used ebony plugs for all locations except the 4 in the center of the main back slat which are walnut. Most people never even notice they are a different wood.

I have to agree with Steve, walnut seems to be the best fit. The maple accent is continuous throughout the top, is balanced to the eye and looks great. Coming together nicely Guy. Fitting mitered banding/edging is never fun; I'm sure you're glad that's behind you. You've probably already completed the splines, but I would go with something that wouldn't distract from the inlay. Probably just walnut. Just like the legs, simple is better, imho.

Maybe cut a scrap of the maple and rough fit it in there, just to get an idea how it would look, I think is an interesting idea but it might be to busy particularly because your only looking at the short edge of the table if it was a more tall monolithic piece that needed to be visually broke then I think the spline would look great

Hi Guy, your videos are great. How can I make butterfly leaf measuring 20 x 60 inches (total width of table being 60 x 80 inches)? Will I have to cut it into three pieces instead of two so that it can get stored underneath without hitting the floor? If I cut it in two pieces of 30 inch each - would the height of the table have to be more than 30 inches, so that the butterfly mechanism can fold and unfold unobstructively? Could you also let me know the brand names of the square rulers that you have used in your project? Most grateful in advance for your help. Kind regards Lam

Beautiful top. If you go with a contrasting wood for the spline, make the grove go all the way around the outside the table. I think it would look a little awkward since it goes slightly past the joint line.

cherry or ebony spline, not maple since you have some of that already so close by, and yes pillow it a bit to steal from that greene and greene charm.

I wouldn't add too much different wood colors because your legs are only Walnut. Unless you add inlay in the legs like in your secretary with tambours built, I would stay in either more Walnut or maybe Maple...But whatever you decide I'm sure will look stunning!

  • @ridinggaia

My gut says pillow out in ebony however I don't think it would be consistent with the overall design. Would it tie into the leg profile? I'd consider doing maple around the entire top. That would be consistent, tie in the inlay on the top and give an interesting edge all the way around.

I would not introduce another contrasting wood. If you want a contrast, stick with the maple. Dry fit a piece to see if it detracts from the existing maple. If it does, change to walnut.

Hi Guy, I'm a bit late to the party! I'm making a butterfly extending table now and your video is so useful - thank you so much for making it! I have a question regarding the folding part in the middle, it looks like you didn't cut it exactly in half, the two pieces looked as if they were different lengths, is there a reason for that? Or am I seeing things! Ha! Thank you :-)

+Matthew Cremona Yeah, I am thinking complementary rather that contrasting. The end grain is going to show no matter what, so that's why I was thinking ebony. • @mcremona

    @mcremona

I was thinking more for long term but I suppose it also depends on the finish you are going to use. Over time, the walnut will lighten and the cherry will darken. A year from now they'd be a lot closer in darkness. This table is looking great, btw. I'm really excited to see it finished.
