Butterfly Leaf Dining Table 9 - Designing and Installing the Butterfly Leaf

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This time I mark the layout for how the butterfly hinge is going to be installed. Then I use a steel rod and bushings to create the hinge mechanism. This all gets installed into the support system of the table so the leaf will store under the table when it is not in use.
I also show how I add the splines to the edges, and a cool way to hide the end grain of the splines. Then I level the table halves, then the leaf to the rest of the top. Almost complete!
As always, I welcome your questions and comments!

I really appreciate the planning that has to go into your projects and the way that you implement that plan. Can you tell me, did you design the table yourself or did you get the plan from another source? Great job on the splines, I think you made the right choice to use walnut. To me, part of the art of woodworking is sometimes being able to hide the structural details of a project in order to preserve the beauty of the wood. Using the walnut accomplished that. Great job.

Any suggestions on how I can correct this or fix it?

Hi Guy! I watched all 10 of your butterfly dining table videos last night! I've been looking for a design that I would like to build for a while, and fell in love with your table. I would prefer to use solid wood in place of the veneered plywood, and would appreciate any tips you could share to accomplish that, especially how to compensate for wood movement. Any help is sincerely appreciated. Thanks again for inspiring me!

  • @GuysShop

Hey Howard, You could easily use solid wood for the top, however there is no way to do the solid wood framing around it, as it would pull apart over time from expansion.

Looking fantastic Guy. Love that leaf mechanism, use of bushings, etc. Did you work all that out, is this derived from some existing plans? The corner splines turned out nice. I didn't hear any expletive when you were pounding in the alignment pin and you missed :-( I winced, for whatever that's worth ;-) Hopefully you were able to iron it out.

+Marty Backe Thanks Marty! The leaf mechanism was something I worked out myself. There are quite a few designs out there, however I wanted to do my own over engineered take on it. It's not any fun otherwise, right? HaHa. The parts were actually pretty cheap, less than $20 on amazon. And the splines came out really nice. you have to look for them to see them. Not invisible by any means, but nothing to draw your eye to. And yes, I did ding the table with the hammer. It was a very small dent, and it came out really easy with an iron and a little steam.

Awesome video. Trying to do a similar table but have the extensions on each side rather than the middle. I have a question though. How do you connect both of the top plates together. What hinge are you using to allow it to lock into place at 180 degrees? I'm having trouble with this hinge, and it seems like you didn't include it in the video :( Thank you in advance

I was going to use sash locks, however after building it I found it was unecessary. The top is heavy and the pins are fairly tight so it doesn't pull apart unless you want it too.

Thanks Dan! I actually just guessed. I made a mock up and moved it around until it worked. The magic number it worked out to was 1/4 of the total width of the base from the center line.

It took me a few minutes to work out your measurements (after being confused for a few days). It looks like your 5.25" is not taken from 1/4 of the width of the base (33.75"), but from the finished width of the table top of 42"... given that 5.25 is 1/8 of 42. I just wanted to clarify that in case someone stumbles upon these videos looking for the answer to the "where do I put the leaf pivot point" question that I and so many others in the internet have had. Thanks for this series! I've watched it a bunch in preparation for my first dining table build. I'm going with a equalized hidden butterfly leaf design that I cobbled together in CAD from seeing what others have done, including yourself. Again, thanks!

Okay, I"m' confused ( nothing unusual there :) I must have missed it? but don't understand what all that was about @ 11:11 when you did the corner piece in the middle of the edge?? not sure why it was a space there to begin with? Beautiful table.. My grandfather owned a furniture store Years ago in Maine ( Moosehead furniture ) and our family table had a flip-up leave in the middle .. I was thinking of making one like he did. .but no idea on how to do that middle piece .. I see what you did. so I guess it's doable .. But . I"m still thinking of doing a DOUBLE leave .. One under each side.. But full length no cut in the middle.. just make it so the leave unfolds from underneath and flips up.. slide the table together.. and maybe a 2nd one on the other side to flip up? I"m sure that didn't make much sense? but taking your leave.. and leaving it solid with no split in the middle .. and make it fold to the left or right under the table. and hook up there. push a lever under the table to loosen the leave and swing it up into the table . least was my original idea, till I saw this.. GREAT TABLE !!!..

Guy, I was so inspired by this table that I've built the same table using Cherry wood. I do have one question: With the table top halves riding 1/8" above the frame, what supports the leaf 1/8" above the frame on the side opposite the pivot pin? Thanks - Dan

GuysWoodshop I recommend that you handle this democratically, in other words... let your subscribers vote on the level of chair crappiness via a separate video. 1) If they are voted totally crappy then it's the burnpile for them, or 2) mediocre crappy then they need to be placed along the wall away from your beautiful masterpiece of a table.. :) Just a suggestion. Haha!

+GuysWoodshop haha, nice! Did you buy carvers for the table ends? if not, then there's a nice project - two chairs are quicker to build together than building one twice over. of course they would make the store bought ones look worse, but you could always stencil "store bought" on them, just to maintain your reputation with dinner guests!

At about 8:00 minutes in Video #9 you extend the sliding support pieces under the butterfly to level it. But in Video #10, after these support pieces are screwed to the two sliding leafs, they don't project beyond each leaf, and therefore can't help to level the butterfly. How, then, does the unfolded butterfly stay level and even with the sliding leafs? Is it only supported by the aligning pins? And echoing the others, I applaud your excellent work and tutorials.
