Butterfly Leaf Dining Table 7 - Vacuum Press Veneering and Shop Sawn Veneer

Тәжірибелік нұсқаулар және стиль

This time I'm starting to make the top for the table. Since it's going to have a solid wood frame around it, I need to use veneered panels. I show how to make shop sawn veneer and get it ready for veneering. Then I show how I glue it to the substrate, and how to use the vacuum bag to press it to the substrate.
I had a lot of fun doing this as it is a new process for me. If you would like to learn more about the vacuum bag veneering process, I recommend going to Andy Pitts' You Tube channel also, as he is extremely knowledgeable on the subject and has some great videos.
As always, I welcome your questions and comments!

    Guy, I stumbled upon your site because my son is interested in building a dining room table that can expand. I have thoroughly enjoyed the way you explained your project and your patience in doing so. I look forward to finishing the viewing of your project and hope to someday do something similar. Are you still actively posting? I am currently a hobbyist but hope to become more serious in my woodworking in retirement, which will be in about two years. Thanks for being out there for those of us who want to learn! You are a very good teacher.

    I have watched as you posted these episodes and did not watch the videos . I had thought that I wanted to watch it all start to finish but finally I couldn't wait and watched it all to date especially this one with the veneer . I started working with wood when I was about 12 years old with my dad . I just celebrated my 65th birthday yesterday . Watching your videos brought back a lot of memories . I guess all I wanted to say was thank you for sharing your expertise with all of us who only pretend to be woodworkers . I truly think that what I have seen so far is truly a work of art . Your presentation is great and I really look forward to the rest of the videos . Please keep up your videos and look forward to many more .

    Great segment Guy. I really enjoyed watching the process and your commentary along the way. I winched a tiny bit when you were jointing the veneer sandwiched between the plywood. Only because of my previous experience doing that (jointing plywood) and then discovering my jointer knives were grooved from all the plywood glue lines. Maybe you have tougher knives?

  • @GuysShop

    @GuysShop

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Marty Backe Thanks Marty! I always struggle with leaving too much of the commentary in, but I always think that someone will find the info useful, so I leave it in. And the knives on the jointer are segmented carbide knives. I've used plywood on them a number of times, and never had an issue. They are two years old, and have yet to rotate them. Thanks for watching!

  • @MartyBacke

    @MartyBacke

    +GuysWoodshop Cool. Another reason I need to upgrade my jointer. I still have plain high-speed blades, so no plywood for me :-( I'm glad I made that comment, otherwise I would have missed out on another benefit of segmented cutter heads.

    Hi Guy. I'm very interested in learning how you created an outfeed table that works with the Incra TS-LS fence rails. Also interested to see how you are supporting the extra long Incra fence that appears to extend over the outfeed table. I have a TS-LS and am currently trying to figure out how best to create an outfeed table that navigates around the Incra rail on the back side of the saw. Any pics or descriptions would be sincerely appreciated. Love your videos.

  • @GuysShop

    Stunning! Was cost the reason for going with veneer? Stability?

  • @GuysShop

    @GuysShop

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tyler G Cost not an issue at all. My wife wanted a large table, so stability was a major concern. She also wanted inlay around the edge. So to do a hardwood border, the field needed to be by the plywood. Thanks for watching Tyler!

  • @DIYTyler

    Good to know....we are planning our large farmhouse table now and never thought of a plywood substrate. Guess this is an excuse to get a bigger bandsaw for larger re-saw capability! (shhhh)

  • @GuysShop

    @GuysShop

    8 жыл бұрын

    +Tyler G A new project is always a goodtime to campaign for a new tool. When I was referring to stability, it was more from the standpoint of the solid wood banding. if you had a solid wood edge go all the way around a field that large made of solid wood, expansion and contraction of the field would make the border explode on you. A good way to make something that large out if solid wood is to do a bread board edge which is very common on a farm table. My wife didn't want breadboard edges so I went this route.

    +Mitch Peacock - WOmadeOD Thanks Mitch. I was worried about the glue bleeding through on the bottom. the platen I used was MDF, and I didn't want to get it stuck on the platen. I didn't have any melamine at the time, so it seemed prudent. Maybe I'm just being paranoid. Anyhow, it turned out a lot better than I expected for my first time!

    GuysWoodshop Cool. I've seen newspaper and plastic sheet used as a glue barrier too - easier to store for anyone with limited space as you can roll it up with the vac bag. Anyway you did a great job Guy. I've had a bag press on my buy list for a few years now, but I've yet to get to a project that really needed one. Hopefully that will change soon, as I fancy trying it out😉

    There was nothing wrong with the DIY one I built. I wanted a pump that could evacuate a 5x9 bag, and thought a 6 cfm model was appropriate. It was just easier in the long run to get a commercially made unit. The Vacupress model is a very good unit, and am very glad I have it in the shop.

    +Lance's Woodshop Thanks Lance. According to the veneersupplies.com website, if you use the mesh netting, you don't need to use a grooved platen. Also I used the same thickness of ash veneer on the bottom as I did on walnut on the top, so it would equalize the substrate. Have fun with the press!
