Butterfly Flight in Slow Motion!
I filmed slow motion flight and time-lapse eclosion sequences of tropical butterflies, and give a behind-the-scenes tour of our museum's walk-in tropical rainforest exhibit.
Check out naturalsciences.org/ for info about when to visit our museum and the butterflies. [Right now (Dec, 2021) the exhibit is closed due to pandemic-related safety measures. But we're all hoping we can lift restrictions and get it open to all again soon!]

It’s fascinating how you can see the oversized abdomens of the new adult butterflies shrink over time as all the fluid gets pumped into the wings. It’s especially apparent with the monarch butterfly’s hatching.

It would be nice if my oversized abdomen also shrunk over time as an adult 🤣😭

Fun fact: in Brazil (and a few other neighboring countries), the owl butterfly is also known as the "witch butterfly". Common folklore tells that they are witches in disguise, watching over people with the big eyes on their wings. I find it a really spooky and cool concept :)

As you said the Blue morph is iconic and I knew it... but I never knew the underside of its wings was so beautiful as well!

Thank you Dr. Adrian Smith we all love your moths and butterflies ! 🦋
It’s hard to believe something like the owl butterfly can exist. The eyes look like they’re made by an artist, they’ve got subtle shine on them and everything, but it’s just nature’s work and that’s it, crazy.

What? "But it's just natures work and that's it." Proof? That's called circular reasoning, where you assume the premise in the premise itself. You have no proof this is simply nature, all you do is say it. You even say yourself it looks like it was intentionally designed. But nope, it's just nature. Any evidence that it's just nature? I mean evidence, not just repeating yourself..

Never mind how impressive it is that only one butterfly of the mating pair lifts their combined weight, I'M ESPECIALLY IMPRESSED that no body parts are snapped off during the process!! Almost brought tears to my eyes!!!!
@jo-han

Would you snap body parts of if you lifted your brother/sister? I guess evolution will guarantee this, since otherwise the species has a lot less chance of survival if body parts come of that easily :)

@@jo-han - you or I may well "snap body parts off" if you were attached only by your genitals!! That was the WHOLE point of that comment!!! (R/Whoosh anyone??)

@@markchip1 :) Lol, well in that case you have not yet googled men being suspended by their genitals. I do not recommend googling it though :). FYI being suspended by your head, 1 hand, 1 foot, just your head, breasts, suction cups or a big fishhook through the skin of your back also works..... Yet again, I do not recommend googling all of these.... :)

Well im sure the butterfly's body can handle the force of it's own wing beats 😂😅
its so interesting to compare this video to the moth video! despite both being lepidoptera, the two fly so differently!! i LOVE this
I love this stuff Adrian. Well done. So cool.

Recommending your channel to EVERYONE! Much love from Germany ♡
I grew up in NC, and some of my fondest childhood memories are going to this butterfly exhibit in the science museum. Stumbled across this channel completely by chance, only to find this video and see that very exhibit is the source of these incredible videos. Really cool how, years later, you guys are still bringing joy and wonder to this butterfly lover.
Wow, so cool! I never quite realized how large butterfly wings are relative to the size of their bodies. Lovely captures.
Omg yayyyy butterflies! I'm so happy you did butterflies! Thank you :3!!! Amazing footage as always!
I've been there, that place is awesome
What a wonderful Christmas present this video is! :D
Even more stunning when watched with KZread play speed adjusted to .25 in the playback options. Your work is absolutely inspiring. Thank you for all you do.
Time stamp 5:05. The mirror of life. What is up is down. Beautiful capture. Ty. 😃😁😀 I also see the true meaning of becoming one with a mate as they form @ t.s. 4.36 & 5:07 a larger being. Marvelous!!! 🌀
Amazing videos. I am mesmerized by the soothing sight and music. Of course your explanations of each scene is a great bonus :)
These slow-motion flights look awesome~💞 Thank you for sharing this video~🤗

Yes 💕 thank you so much! They look so lovelyy More of this please Adrian!
Very interesting as usual.
Fascinating photography showing crucial aspects of butterfly flight!
Beautiful animals. So glad I subscribed after the moth video.
deeply inspiring. thanks for capturing and sharing this fragile beauty
Thank you so much for these amazing sequences of beauty.
Could you show us a slow-motion video of insects chewing? I see the rapid action of a mantis' mandibles and often want a closer look.
Beautiful How that evolved is incredible.
Nature is crazy awesome. The eye spots even have white in them to simulate moon glow. It makes the world seem somehow planned out in a weird way. ☺️
I really love this video..it was amassing to see the blue morpho fliying!! thanks
It's so cool that you made it free! You are so cool and genuine and this is awesome
your work is really appreciated
A long waited video! Thank you for making my day!
I recommend The Butterfly Palace in Branson, Missouri. There is an entrance fee, but it is well worth it. They keep and breed hundreds of different butterflies in a huge indoor forest. When I was there, I just happened to be wearing red, which is the color of their feeding-flowers. I had butterflies all over me. It was the coolest thing.
Amazing work. Absolutely stunning!
braa i love ds vidoi
Butterfly is my favourite insect....
Evolution has even created the look of reflected highlights on the pupil motif on their wings. 👁 wow
What a wonderful video!! Thanks for sharing!
Wow butter flies are so cool and awesome in slow motion Also cool sloth
Awesome footage. Thanks so much!
Absolutely wonderful video! Gorgeous & marvelous butterflies! The colors and movements are fascinating. Your videos are packed with info! Thank you! Hope to make it to a butterfly sanctuary once travel is okay to do.
Like a slow motion ballet ❤
Such wonder!! And awe of nature. Thank you so much for sharing this beauty of flight and design with us. Also love your video of moths.
I LOVE YOUR WORK. IT IS BEAUTIFUL. THANKS
i love how you can kinda see the scales on the wings if you look closely, i think it's such an interesting detail about butterflies and moths
I think moths are beautiful too!
Your work is magnificent and a true joy to watch. Thanks a million
From France 🇫🇷 with lavender growing in the garden to provide nurture for ‘my’ butterflies. 🦋🌳🦋
How marvelous is this footage for us to better respect the beauty of these creatures!!!!!!!! I wish I could see this level with my real eyes. Kinda sad they are not free to enjoy a world made for them... you free them eventually right.
I grew up going to this museum and exploring the butterfly habitat, I never realized that this is where these experiments and videography were based out of!
so mesmerizing...
such beautiful creatures! :-)
I really love your channel ❤
So beautiful! Thank you for posting this.
Thank you for your video.
What an extraordinarily fascinating video. So pleased to have stumbled on it thank you.
i always get emotional watching these hahaha, this is so awesome !!! :)
I was at a conservatory like this one taking pictures of butterflies when two mating Blue Morpho’s landed on my hand. I tried gently moving them to a leaf on one of the trees and then to some flowers but they decided to stay for a while. So I calmly sat down and waited for them to leave on their own. Eventually the male took flight while holding on to the female and off they went. It was an amazing experience.
I went to the museum of natural history for my birthday the other day and they had an amazing butterfly conservatory, they had a lot of the same species seen in this video, it’s nice to see them in slow motion especially the blue morphos as they were very fast
Beautiful! Love these kidns of videos of yours
Hello from New Zealand! My daughter and I love watching your videos!
It's just crazy how massive the wings are in comparison to the body.
