Thanks for joining We Ain’t Raised Right Podcast! And yet they persisted…Ogre was scared to bring this one to the boys. Chris Cornell might be his favorite metal vocalist of all time. The bar is set so high! Does VoicePlay meet the challenge?! Does Butcher shock us all?! We’re reacting to VoicePlay’s most recent cover of Black Hole Sun, originally performed by Soundgarden. Also, why did they tag this as cyberpunk? A couple of them are old enough to really know what cyberpunk is…

Voiceplay went down the cyber punk route for this, as the song was used in a game. Maybe you aren't aware that it was used that way. Never expect VP to be too similar to the original. As Geoff has said, we aren't karaoke singers.

We've reacted to at least a dozen VoicePlay songs so we're familiar with them. We certainly don't expect them to be a karaoke machine but we do have expectations for certain songs. We understand that this worked for some people. It worked for Butcher. It just didn't work for the rest of us.

Sometimes when I really like/know a song, when I first hear a cover, I can't really "hear" it. I'm listening for the original and my brain won't let go of the original arrangement and vocal. This was one of those for me. It took me about 3 listens over 3 days to accept this. Once I could actually hear it, now I really like it. This weirdly didn't happen with "Nothing Else Matters" but did happen with "Whiskey in the Jar." Don't know if that's an issue for any of you guys but just putting it out there, lol. Always appreciate y'all's reactions!! ❤

I’m also going to respectfully disagree with most of your opinions 😅. I adore the original and I thought they completely captured the essence of the song while still making it their own. Also, the electric guitar sound was post-production effect on the vocals, mainly Geoff’s bass.

Now now, Butcher...just because they're totally wrong is no reason to insult them!😉 Kidding, I luv you guys and respect where you're coming from. But maybe it'll grow on you. It took me a bit to like "Whiskey In The Jar" beyond just the awesome voices. I like the original of this, but never had this song stuck in my head for days after first hearing it before Voiceplay's version. And I mean, it's kind of a good thing that we can find songs that don't blow us away by Voiceplay. If every song was perfect, none of them would be special, if that makes sense. 💙💙💙💙💙

It's not required to like every song they cover. It's another case of each person has their own preference and you did it respectfully which we all appreciate. I like it when they go all experimental with all the bells, whistles and effects, it's about taking risks for the project . I noticed a few other reactors (one in particular doesn't like any Geoff drops) thought that first drop was out of place as well, but I just thought of it as a warning shot (and probably part of Layne's contribution to the arrangement). All in all I didn't "not" like it but I never really cared for the original much either, the effects were pretty cool and fitting for Eli's vision for the project he worked hard on that set .

  • @EtherealForever

Eli/Layne arrangement and it was meant to be a cyberpunk version. They very rarely do the song as it was done before - but they do try and pay respects. Geoff is the big Chris Cornell fan. Glad for your honest opinions though!! The beatboxing was pretty insane. Nothing Else Matters was arranged by Geoff. 🌹🕊

When the original came out, it blew our hair back…it was like nothing we’d ever heard before. I remember passing the CD around in science class and hunkering down over my disc man and losing my mind. This version was a beautiful homage…it brought that feeling back. It was a unique take, for sure. And that was smart. Chris was in a class by himself.

I get that you four didn’t like Geoff’s bass drop in that first spot, but I do love hearing it. That being said, I do agree that it is not necessary in every song they do. That is one think I have a little more appreciation for Tim in Home Free. He doesn’t put bass where it doesn’t t belong in a song just to show off. He doesn’t do it every single song. Eli rocked out in this cover, though! Love his rocker vibe and voice. I love Caesar’s voice in this one (all all around). Sorry you guys were disappointed! I loved it from an a cappella standpoint. It’s their Cyber punk I version and they weren’t trying to do a “ode” to Chris Cornell.

I get the whole vibe they gave to this "classic grunge"song ... even Geoff's drop is where it belongs ... a cyber punk twist that feels right. Also totally in love withe the little bell tones they do in the beginning and the middle of the song... it brings an expectation of something magical or momentous about to happen. You should give this version a few tries and see if it grows on you...;)

Weirdly I agree with all you. So first time I heard this, I cringed... I was just like you three, I could see the talent.. how can you not? But the whole arrangement made me go... but that is not what Black Hole Sun and Soundgarden sound like. I also think as much as I love VP, I didn't want to like it. That said.... about the third time I listened too it, I started to really hear what I was listening too without expecting to hear something else and I have to say. I like it. I actually like it a lot. Great way to keep it real guys, keep it up.

You can always go back and listen to the original. Respectfully, this was 🔥.. and i really think if Chris was here he’d have dug it too. Chris’s covers and live versions of songs were often “far” from the originals, too. Billie Jean comes to mind…. I’ve been blaring this for almost a month now and it gets better and better every time. 🤷🏻‍♀️ to each their own, 💯

I suppose I come from an entirely different perspective on this. I never found Chris Cornell that exceptional of a singer. I was much more into Everclear and The Offspring than SoundGarden back then. I loved the 'idea' of Grunge as going back to garage band rock 'n roll, and I always felt for this song the best part was that buzzy, distorted instrumental instead of the vocals. To me (caps on ME, not expecting anyone else to necessarily agree), VoicePlay really captured the feel of that part of the song and (again, for ME) surpassed the vocals with a lot more emotion. I especially liked the way they were able to change up the vocals, so it wasn't as repetitive as I found the original vocals - and yes, that includes adding that bass drop. I have gone back specifically to listen to the original after VP premiered this - in case I was misremembering. It has after all, been quite a few years. Sorry - I highly prefer VoicePlay's cover to the original. Although, I still really love that distortion on the guitar part. However, that could also be explained by the way I really preferred the harder aspects of other groups at the time.

I think all of you were impressed with what VoicePlay can do, but it wasn't Chris Cornell, and I get that. I'm like that too with certain singers, it's sort of what I jokingly refer to as the "Old Yeller syndrome" it might look like it, but its not it. I would like to think that Chris would've thought this was a kick ass remake done in a way that maybe he didn't think was possible. I look at it as part tribute and part next level. I think Eli and Geoff pay a great tribute and give Cornell a lot of respect in this version. If this one wasn't a favorite of all, no worries, VoicePlay will kick ass on the next one.

To each their own… 😅 I liked this one better than the original. But I think it worked for me since I knew the latter only in a more mutual way… But I can totally see what you mean, anyway… 🙂 Some time ago, all the world was hyping „The sound of silence“ by „Disturbed“ (I think), partly to the point of believing this was an original song. For me (even if I am not quite that old), the Simon and Garfunkel version was one of ‚the‘ defining songs of my growing up. The disturbed’s version for me was never more than „ok“. It just didn’t feel right, even if it is, for others, apparently a very powerful song. So well yes, that happens. And it is ok if it happens. It would be a pity and a tad boring if we loved all the same things…😊

I always enjoy your reactions and look forward to them. I also don't always comment. I came to the party late where grunge was concerned. Didn't even know who Chris Cornell was until he was in the news. I went down that rabbit hole. Anyway, VoicePlay takes risks. Geoff is a huge fan of Chris Cornell's from what I've heard. I think Chris Cornell's legacy has a really high bar to reach. At any rate, I think they did a fantastic job on this cover. They always do their best to honor the original, but they will tell you if you want to hear the original, then listen to that. They are not going to copy it exactly. I also understand that there will be songs they do that aren't received as well as others. It's all subjective to the listener. For example, I enjoyed Geoff's cover of Wicked Game, but it doesn't rank in my top 5 or 10 of his catalogue. I get it. Just as Eli might have saved the song for some of you, Butcher saved this reaction for me. Thank you, Butcher! Thank you all to your reactions and honest opinions. Even if Butcher only agreed to be contrarian, I'll take it. 😂 I get that it's a very different sound, but considering the difficulty of melding a grunge rock song (a sound that is heavily dependent upon guitars and distortion) with the limitations of a cappella, where they have to somehow vocally fill all those missing frequencies- yeah, there are going to be tricks like arpeggios and bell tones, because it can't all be stacked chords- and I think they did an amirable job. And anyway, a cover that attempts to replicate the original is pointless. If you aren't putting your own spin on it, why would anyone not just listen to the original? But hey, not your cup of tea, and that's cool. Me and Butcher will just be smug 'cos we know we're right. 😉
