This morning we dedicated a few hours to handle the march lambs inside two coveralls.
Weaning and weighing lambs 8 to 10 weeks old requires running the flock from our three large family pens down the alley into the handling area that we use. The flock is contained in a large holding pen prior to travelling into the race up into the scales where they are weighed and ear tags are read. This system is an automated approach that the tag reader scans each animals ear tag. As they stand onto the scale, their weight is recorded to their tag. This information contains, the gender, birthdate, ewe's tag number as their mama and their weaning weight.
