Busy Los Angeles Tower ATC on VATSIM

Ойындар

In this episode, we try streaming something new - some live VATSIM ATC traffic from the LAX_TWR position. About a month ago I decided to re-activate my VATSIM ATC credentials and transfer to ZLA -- I had been an active ZOA and ZSE controller for many years, but my last active scope session was around 2011, so I had a lot of re-learning to do, plus learning the LA airspace. This video is my third ZLA session and second on LAX_TWR. It was a fun shift with lots of traffic - plenty of professionals and also a newbie or two that I got to help out.

That's what growing up in the BBS & MUD gaming era will do for ya... nothing but text-based games when I was a kid, so my typing speed (especially on a good mechanical keyboard like I'm using in that video) is pretty high :) And, thanks to that old microphone setup (which I don't use anymore) you can hear every click :P

this video made me feel a lot better about myself I did one flight at vatsim in the last year and it was a disaster. Clearance had to be repeated 2 times for me and during appr. I didn't know how to program a hold so I kept flying straight because I didn't dare to say anything. I had a great ATC though, he gave me vectors so I followed that one and to this day I'm still sad that I didn't say thank you to him in particular because he helped me out greatly. But it was all too much for me. But after seeing this King Air not reading back anything and just saying roger and after seeing how others struggle I feel a lot better about my first flight.

Glad to hear you enjoyed it. I think the majority of people have a loooot of nerves when starting their first flight on a network. The fact that you mention being given a hold, also makes me think that you probably started off during an event, which is the worst possible time to try the network for the first time :) Hopefully you'll get back at it and keep trying! It's a lot of fun once you get the hang of things and can do a flight end to end without any goofs.

  • @FluppiLP

oh no there was not event, I did check for that :D It was just unfortunate timing, I think. Maybe it wasn't a hold but I do know that I had been given a waypoint that wasn't in my Flightplan anymore so I had no idea how to get it in. I thought I knew my airplane well enough but I didn't. In hindsight it's so easy to just talk to ATC and request vectors but the things you do when you're nervous :D Anyways, I requested the lessons to become a controler just yesterday and I will have great fun doing that. I'll definitely get back to flying on vatsim again aswell :D In the meantime I've become a lot better with VOR navigation, GPS and FMC and it's a lot easier for me to understand ATC now (eventhough I did know what so say when and what to expect from ATC). The quality of the radio was a big issue. Not always the easiest when English isn't the first language and when you get confronted with fast speaking ATC and the vatsim radio quality. So in short I will get back to vatsim as both, pilot and ATC :D I just hope whenever I fly on vatsim I get a controler that is as patient and helpful as you are :)

That Knightmare_Frame guy commenting though, "this is why I don't like VATSIM", "roger is not a readback". VATSIM is a place meant to learn, so obviously there will be people who are still learning the procedures. What I dislike of VATSIM are these assholes who like to put others down because they don't know, both among pilots and ATCs.

VATSIM is indeed meant to be a learning space and somewhere where people who want to be pilots or air traffic controllers can grow, as well as people doing it for hobby. It's not meant to be a "YOU MAKE A MISTAKE, IMMA BITE YOUR ASS"

I bought XP11 about a year ago, had two very bad flights on VATSIM that made me leave XP11 for 6 months and have just yesterday come back to it. It’s so nice seeing from a controller’s perspective what is happening. Almost calms my nerves completely. Thank you so much. You are an angel!

Glad you enjoyed it. The network is a lot of fun and very tolerant of mistakes. New and untrained pilots are a regular experience and something controllers deal with every day. The biggest two tips I'd give for you are: 1) try and learn from every experience - if you're the type that likes to make a log of your simflights, include notes on the mistakes you recognized making and how you might avoid them next time, and 2) never accept an instruction you're unclear about. If the controller wants you to do something and you are not CRYSTAL clear what their intentions are, ask for clarification first rather than blindly agreeing and not really understanding what you're committing to. If you do both of those things you'll be far from the worst pilot on the network :-)

Thank you so much for your feedback! Seeing those side of a controller reminds me you guys are humans too haha and now it just voices in a simulator. And I will do both of what you say. I do clarify instructions when confused. The one time I didn’t is one of the two bad times. The ATC cleared me to hold short of the runway and I responded saying I understood but I had no clue what he had said and just taxied over the runway thinking he’d given me clearance to cross and the controller was furious with me, since an aircraft was on short final. I learned my lesson but felt so bad I left. I’m back with much more knowledge (have a friend who controls MSP airspace) and my first flight back went without a single flaw.

I just did a 737-800 flight yesterday during the KJAX event. FMC decided to crash on the approach vectors, autopilot wanted to maintain 3,000 instead of descending to 2,000, missed the visual approach while switching frequencies, only to end up stalling it 300 feet and left of the runway. Can't get much worse than that can it?

or, at that class D I used to practice at for my SEL PP: "A380 cleared for the option runway____" What's "cleared for the option" you ask? That's the option to full-stop landing or touch and go landing. And you don't have to decide until the moment you decide. Gives CFIs the flex to train the stud as they see fit. I can imagine an A380 cleared for an option; and we have to see at the last minute if he goes around or full-stops. THAT would be hilarious.

I know this is an old video, though I do have to ask how long did it take you to pass the Clearance Delivery Exam? I'm taking it right now and I'm struggling hard. I can't find the documents I need, nor do I understand them. tips?

  • @TimKrajcar

    @TimKrajcar

    5 жыл бұрын

The ZLA clearance delivery exam wasn't much of a challenge for me because I've been a virtual ATC since 2002 :) Having given a few thousand clearances, for me it was mostly just learning the local SOPs. I can't get the ZLA website to even expand the Controllers menu for me right now, so I'm not much help on pointing you at the documents for it, but generally speaking, you need to be very comfortable with the CRAFT recipe for a clearance first - and then it's mostly about checking the filed route and altitude to ensure they are usable, match preferred routes, and comply with altitude restrictions. Assuming everything checks out, ensure you know the correct routing and altitude instructions to issue. I make a shorthand cheatsheet for each airport I work - here's my KSAN as of the time of this video (which is now almost a year old) - docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1GnZRvtj_dUYZtlJtZaB_0yf5-lG4Pt-A8t9i1JdTxS0/edit?usp=sharing - you'll see on the SID section I have noted the initial altitude to issue for all the SIDs using a shorthand (CVS = "Climb via SID", CVSXM 8000 = 'Climb via SID except maintain 8000', etc). This works for me and maybe it will for you too. :)

Well I just got my s1 at ZLA, about 9 months ago I joined an artcc for the first time with no experience and failed 3 times, after 3 failures you have to wait 6 months to take it again, I moved up to zoa and received training then I came back and passed it on the first try. So just look around and practice and get the routes right with loas before you try. I could have passed sooner but I didn't do the reasearch I needed, so just go on as an observer and practice fixing clearances then once you feel good take the exam again

I think pilots should watch this to help them understand that it's not simple, you won't be shot for making errors. Pilots, just ATTEMPT to understand basic rules, get/understand your bearings, fly from an airport you understand well, and fly a route you know well and land at an airport you know well over and over until Vatsim and flying are not scary but fun... as it should be... we need more pilots on Vatsim and the controllers will all follow... gets boring if nobody fly's guys!

You have to join a division via www.vatsim.net/region and then it should direct you to that website where you would register and complete your computer-based training and basic exam. Once you do that you would sign up for an airspace that you would like to control, and then register on their website. Complete their training and then you can control whatever you were certified for. Those instructions were based off of my experience on the VATUSA division. The other divisions might do it differently. If so, just follow the instructions given either on the website or via the emails you will get once you signed up for a division.
