I believe that no matter what is done to improve the security features of these or any coins the counterfeiters will find a way to replicate them. Its like fighting a losing battle.

About a year ago or so, a freight train passing through Manitoba into Wisconsin was searched and US customs seized 900000 counterfeit $1 US notes. Who would question them in circulation?

Based on the LaPresse article, it appears counterfeiters have 'perfected' the new security features but still made a major error on the reverse where the $ sign replaces the numeral 2 and Canada is repeated twice. Betting it won't be long before we see some in circulation as there are bound to be more opportunists out there taking a gamble and trying to get rich.

I'm confused as to why Canada doesn't demonetise the 1996-style toonies lacking security measures. UK did so with the round pound coins a few years back with great success...

That's the logical response. I think the first step in dealing with a problem is acknowledging the problem. I don't think the Mint or the governement have quite done that yet!

I can't believe this is still a problem... it really seems to be getting worse, too. I did a 10 roll $2 hunt and found 8 of them. I've mostly stuck to shop hunting for hunting for toonies now, which is just as successful! ..but every second shop I ask at has at least one fake $2 coin... When I do my shop hunts, I always show the cashiers a colored coin to show them what I am looking for. Sometimes, people respond to me and say "I've never seen one of those, but I'll check..." and are surprised to find a 2022 or 2023 colored toonie inside. I even got some crazy foreign coins, like a 2 franc coin or a 500 lire commemorative (no idea how if their currency changed 20 years ago..!). If those can enter into circulation here in Canada, anything can - and, yeah, as you've said, it's really only collectors or expert who keep an eye out for these counterfeits... In Europe we have a problem with fake 2 euro coins as well, they've definitely been appearing in my change more and more often. Luckily in Austria when you deposit coins you do so at a machine, so they almost always get stopped at the deposit machines and hence usually dont show up in rolls, but they don't have those everywhere. It does make me wonder if we will redesign some coins to add security features, as the euro coins's security features are terrible compared to Canadian coins...

  • @CADRollHunter

Interesting - I didn't realize the 2 Euros were being faked, as well. I wouldn't be surprised if it's the same factories...

@@CADRollHunter I'm not too sure about that, as from what I've read in a recent Reuters article, the most likely place of origin seems to be Kosovo (which is not in the eurozone but uses the euro). Lots of people from southern europe travel to Austria very frequently, so it's not too surprising why some may show up here. It's quite bad in Kosovo as well, some cashiers outright reject 2 euro coins. Of course it's also possible that they are made in China and released into circ in Kosovo. What's funny is that sometimes the counterfeiters are a little 'creative' and make fakes of coins which don't exist, such as Germany's regular 2 euro from 2009 😅

Ive imported coca leaf into canada,, huge ass box of 1000 teabags, with hand written addresses, passed customs no problem, not even sure if my box was inspected, it had tape on it but the shipper might have been the one to tape it I also imported fineasteride before I could get a legit script, same thing except it was a very tiny packages with low stated value, but made it through a few time I ordered Customs can't stop shiiii in my experience, they just have so many packages and so little man force and corporations expect thier products to be shipped quickly with minimum fuss, so I'm sure that adds an angle, if they searched every package very rich people would get upset thier product ismoving slow
