Bushings Vs Bearings | What’s The Difference, And Why Does It Matter?

Спорт

You’ve almost certainly heard the terms “bushings” and “bearings”, but do you know the difference? Do you know which one is better suited for your bike or your components? And did you know that not every bushing or bearing is born equal?! In this video, Anna Cipullo explains everything you need to know about bushings and bearings when it comes to mountain bikes.

you missed an important aspect. Bushings are better suited in locations where there's some rotation, but it's not a full rotation and totates in slow speeds, eg. like the pivots on the Ibis ripmo. Placing a bearing where there's say 15* of rotation renders the bearing a bit redundant as it poses little benefits performance-wise, wears quickly at a certain part of the bearing and adds weight and cost.

not always the case. Bearings are not used in some flat pedals, jockey wheels.

@@ivanteo1973 you missed my point. I mentioned that bushing hold additional advantage in locations of partial rotation, eg. suspension pivots, where the rotation is not 360* but rather a fraction, eg.20* I'm aware that bushing are used in full rotation applications.

I think you need to collab with gcn ollie on this topic. I would love to see an experiment with drivetrain efficiency, rolling resistance, comparing worn, dirty, new, bushing vs bearing etc to see how much of a difference it makes for us normal ppl. Going from a TDF slick to a maxxis assegai for example..but maybe I'm weird

One correction. In the video it's mentioned that bushings are not used in hubs. However, Mavic does use plastic bushings on the several road and MTB hubs.

I want to replace my air shock, that is mounted with bearings, with a coil shock. Can I mount the coil with bushings since I don't have a bearing mount to fit the coil? Or will this damage the frame? It's a nukeproof mega but it might not be bushingproof?

hello bikeshop, I have been told by Anna I can swap out my bushings for better quality ones. Er ok! what quality do you have already? no clue there is no information provided by the manufacturer. Well what makes you think you don't already have good bushings? Umm good point. Here is a good suggestion don't be swayed by videos sponsored by bushing companies and just ride your bike till it breaks then comeback.

#AskGMBNTech I recently purchased a mid drive kit and ran into some issues. This pertains to gearing which is why I thought I'd post it here: I have a full sus xc bike which I am in the process of electrifying, I have the motor kit (which I fixed according to recommendations), a shimano LG kit (basically rear cassette + mech + shifter). However, after sizing my chain up according to recommendations, the chain always seems to jump from the front chain ring. What gives?

The other issue with a ball in partial rotation applications is that it pushes the grease away from where it does rotate into the areas where the ball does not rotate to. Where as in full rotation applications the grease is constantly redistributed.
