Bushings Vs Bearings | What’s The Difference, And Why Does It Matter?
Спорт
You’ve almost certainly heard the terms “bushings” and “bearings”, but do you know the difference? Do you know which one is better suited for your bike or your components? And did you know that not every bushing or bearing is born equal?! In this video, Anna Cipullo explains everything you need to know about bushings and bearings when it comes to mountain bikes.

you missed an important aspect. Bushings are better suited in locations where there's some rotation, but it's not a full rotation and totates in slow speeds, eg. like the pivots on the Ibis ripmo. Placing a bearing where there's say 15* of rotation renders the bearing a bit redundant as it poses little benefits performance-wise, wears quickly at a certain part of the bearing and adds weight and cost.

not always the case. Bearings are not used in some flat pedals, jockey wheels.

@@ivanteo1973 you missed my point. I mentioned that bushing hold additional advantage in locations of partial rotation, eg. suspension pivots, where the rotation is not 360* but rather a fraction, eg.20* I'm aware that bushing are used in full rotation applications.
You are amazing Anna at explaining things! ❤ Keep these techie videos coming!
Thank YOU, Anna - for this long-overdue, very succinct bearing/bushing tutorial! We all ride on 'em, depend on 'em, and most of us didn't know the difference, until now!
Great video! Doing a great job Anna, I appreciate you.
As a weight counter for my MTB , absolutely changing all the bearings to bushings . And it’s rather easy to service. Only hubs and BB I see the reason to use bearing .😂
Very informative! Thank you!
amazing explanation !! thanksss❤
Nice details 👍
I think you need to collab with gcn ollie on this topic. I would love to see an experiment with drivetrain efficiency, rolling resistance, comparing worn, dirty, new, bushing vs bearing etc to see how much of a difference it makes for us normal ppl. Going from a TDF slick to a maxxis assegai for example..but maybe I'm weird
One correction. In the video it's mentioned that bushings are not used in hubs. However, Mavic does use plastic bushings on the several road and MTB hubs.

Only in their freehubs, I believe. Which makes a little more sense than in the hub shell.
Bushes are for hiding in, bearings are for when your lost 🤌

I want to replace my air shock, that is mounted with bearings, with a coil shock. Can I mount the coil with bushings since I don't have a bearing mount to fit the coil? Or will this damage the frame? It's a nukeproof mega but it might not be bushingproof?
Shock bushings that I've used haven't been open to the elements - they've had thin o rings to seal them from dirt ingress.
Can I swap normal bearings on a bike for ceramic ones? I know I can but where, in what places?
Im supposed to be greasing my bearings every week???

Absolutely not lmao
My old jockey wheels use bushing (Deore). Now I use XT which uses bearing. Just feeling better LOL
hello bikeshop, I have been told by Anna I can swap out my bushings for better quality ones. Er ok! what quality do you have already? no clue there is no information provided by the manufacturer. Well what makes you think you don't already have good bushings? Umm good point. Here is a good suggestion don't be swayed by videos sponsored by bushing companies and just ride your bike till it breaks then comeback.

I don't know man. Regular service sounds better than destroying my multi thousand dollar machine. Even if you got a cheap department store bike why ruin it? We've become so waseful no one maintains anything anymore
Well, I never had to replace bearings on my dh and I ride it twice a week since 2 years. My old dh uses bushing, I had to relube every ride and change everything every 3 months so... I think I prefer bearings 😅
Pretty
#AskGMBNTech I recently purchased a mid drive kit and ran into some issues. This pertains to gearing which is why I thought I'd post it here: I have a full sus xc bike which I am in the process of electrifying, I have the motor kit (which I fixed according to recommendations), a shimano LG kit (basically rear cassette + mech + shifter). However, after sizing my chain up according to recommendations, the chain always seems to jump from the front chain ring. What gives?
I've used Legos for bushings in jockey wheels before
Maybe if you don't follow GMBN's advice of constantly pressure washing your bike, your bearings won't corrode so fast...
Ml 🙏 to you all
If you remove your bearings then take them to a bearing trader you can save £££££’s. If you tell them what application you are using them for they can point you in the right direction on how to upgrade your standard worn out bearings
And one reason why it doesn't matter: when either or is presented in the construction, it was done for a reason (be it performance or economical). And this reason is already depicted in price and marketing
Seems like you've never heard of a sleeve bearing.
Just another advert with crap technical info

So why watch it without providing some useful critical feedback?
bushings are the inferior choice, she is just spewing crap on bearings, your suspension will still bag with worn out bushings and they have way more friction than bearings, also nobody regreases bearings every week, wtf is that nonsense

@@thescerigai ball bearings in partial rotation apps just dig notches in the races. Full compliment needles work better. But you'll find in industrial and automotive applications bronze bushes in partial rotation applications.

The other issue with a ball in partial rotation applications is that it pushes the grease away from where it does rotate into the areas where the ball does not rotate to. Where as in full rotation applications the grease is constantly redistributed.

Bearing in a pedal saving 2 or 3 watts!!??? Naaaa ...don't think so. In a pedal rotating maximum two revolutions per second ? I have no data on it but I don't believe that could be more than a fraction of a watt difference!
@Finnspin_unicycles

Bikers are always very "optimistic" to how much watts something saves, if you add all the claimed savings up, some bikes should practically be flying..
How is that bushing bearing up? 🙄🤦♂️
