Bushfire injured koalas return home

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

At the start of 2020, Zoos Victoria's vets, vet nurses and keepers were on the ground in East Gippsland, working hard to treat and save as many injured koalas and wildlife as possible.
Today we're excited to let our Zoo Members know that 14 koalas rescued during that devastating time have finally returned home. Each of the koalas received emergency treatment at triage centres in the bushfire zones immediately after the blazes this year. They then continued their recovery at Healesville Sanctuary, Melbourne Zoo and at Phillip Island Nature Parks. Some required multiple surgeries for severe burns and many months of follow-up treatment.
This special and momentous occasion is the culmination of months of work from many dedicated organisations who we'd like to acknowledge, including: Department Environment Land Water and Planning; EcoPlan Australia; Federation University; Parks Victoria; and Phillip Island Nature Parks.

So happy to see the success of this program! Living on the other side of the world I watched with great sadness as this tragedy unfolded in Australia and sent money to support the rescue programs, but the heroes are the first responders and medical personnel that were on the ground to help the people and wildlife effected by the fires. The challenge ahead is how to prevent these types of disasters from occurring again and again.

This made me cry, because I remember that Spinach didn't make it😥😥 Then I remember that, against all odds, Leafy and Vicky did. That makes me cry happy tears. I'm so glad these sweethearts get to go home. Spinach is in heaven with Lewis, and my Big Man, Jordan. No more pain. I live on a very fixed income in the US, but I would beggar myself to help these angels. Because of these fires, I have become a very passionate koala advocate. I might live on the other side of the world, but that just makes me love them all the more. Thank you all for turning your lives inside out to help save these sweet, innocent animals. Koalas forever! #savethekoalas💖💖💖💖

I hate them having those collars on. It looks like a microchip would be sufficient with today’s technology.
