    Great idea to make the notch in the toggle. I usually use a toggle with a marlin spike hitch to hang my pack or my hammock. It all works......Take care, Bluefin.

    I’ve recently seen another take on toggles. It may have been on Blackie Thomas’s channel and he shows cutting “7” notches on each end of a toggle. I can’t effectively explain how to attach them to a ridge line but it gives an equally effective use of the design as the two holed toggle. Worth a look. Another technique for the bushcrafter.

    Hi. Yes I would agree with you. Putting a hole through the middle like that would weaken it and also run the risk of spitting it while doing it. Plus of course, they are much faster to make the way you are making them. I make them the same way.

    Hi Jim, great video. I must have missed it a while back. Just wondering, do you have any issue if the only trees 🌲available are much thinner trunk🎋than in the video? In other words, do you compensate for a skinny tree by raising the height of the loop to compensate for the extra slack in the line? I hope this question makes sense, Much appreciated! 😀

    When cutting a notch, You remove the surface tension of the toggle all the way round, which will weaken the it severely, compared to drilling holes where You only remove a little of the surface tension. Having said that, I don´t think it will do much difference because using toggles the pressure will always be more on the cordage than actually on the toggle.

  • @zoehancock
    @zoehancock Жыл бұрын

    The toggle does not need to be very strong! The point of the toggle is to hold the knot- the knot is what you hang the pack loop on - not the toggle. The hole/grove is to keep the toggle attached to the knot. You can use a much smaller stick and still be ok. Look at hammock hanging videos.

    So cutting a groove all the way round weakens the toggle less than drilling a small hole? Or weakens it not at all?

  • @MuskratJim

    @MuskratJim

    Жыл бұрын

    the amount of weakening is negligible as long as the toggle is the thickness of your thumb and the notch is mostly just removing the bark.

    Whether one drills a hole or cuts a groove, the toggle is weakened: it's six of one and half a dozen of the other. I don't bother: I tie a loop in the rope and then flip a girth hitch around the toggle. To tie anything up or down, I pass the end between the loops of the girth hitch. That way I don't have rope against rope as I tension up. "That toggle", as some Americans tend to put it, "ain't goin' nowhere."

    Another variant, but IF you would like to view and comment on my video, about the Robert Toggle No Knot Ridgeline, you would see why it requires TWO holes in the Toggle and in no way does it impair the integrity of the Toggle whatsoever because the tension is along the length and not at 90 degrees. For suspending a Backpack, I too would never dream of thinking to put a hole in a Toggle. I think with my system that with your One Good Arm it could help you a lot as no need for a Taught line Hitch or Trucker's Hitch or Evenk Knots to be able to erect and very taught quick take up and takedown Ridgeline. Thank you and excuse me if I self promote because if I don't, I simply get swallowed by the BIG Channels who won't give me a mention - that's YT for you.
