    All you need to do is learn how to spot potassium permanganate in its natural habitat, and then just hope you brought along some sugar. But I always just search the woods for a self-lighting blowtorch lair. They're easier to find in the Southwest.

    If you're required to carry a wood disc, gunpowder, salt, and cotton pads with you to be "bushcraft" starting a fire... I'll just remain non-bushcraft and carry a lighter to start my fire.

  • @Estranged180

    @Estranged180

    3 ай бұрын

    Wood disc is most likely provided by the surrounding area. That's not gunpowder, it's potassium permanganate. Ground with the salt tends to lead to fire, as you can see. Carrying salt is a good thing. Salt tablets are used to clarify water. Cotton pads are used in first aid kits (sometimes, cotton balls too) to staunch a bleeder. Sure, a lighter would work, but it's a neat trick when your lighter fails.

    I learned how to start a fire at 7 years old. Go in woods, grab lots of sticks and limbs, literally littering the forest floor, grab a handful of leaves, light leaves using a lighter, bought at any gas station, add sticks, add larger sticks, then heavier limbs. Even works in wet snowy weather, find dry kindling under treefalls, around boulders, even around larger trees on the opposite side of the prevailing winds, just takes a bit longer harvesting enough dry to get a good enough fire going then the wet wood doesn't matter. I used to camp year round. My friend upped the fire starting game by buying a propane torch for 20 bucks. Yes i COULD light it the boy scout way, but it's 2024, we don't live in the stone age. We have mastered the art of making fire from a handheld device in a split second.
