Bus Pass Bandits (Old Age Criminals Documentary) | Real Stories

A wonderfully anarchic and humorous look at old age pensioners who had taken to crime in their sunset years. The documentary had a fantastic parade of old time crooksters - from small scale smugglers to the bank fraudster who set up false accounts in the names of his dead pets. There was Ivy the cheque card fraudster who had done time but reckoned this type of crime was fine because no-one got hurt apart from the banks. And then there was Charlie who claimed to have been a successful bank robber all his life and was, at the ripe old age of 80, still on parole for his latest con man misdemeanour.

Sid is 80, & his mind is so sharp. He remembers which bank he defrauded with the budgie's name, which one he scammed with the kitty's name, & which one he outsmarted with the spaniel's name. He uses people's stereotypes of old people to outsmart people as well--I laughed out loud when he told the story about being told by social services that he couldn't move out of his apartment, so he said no problem because I love looking out my 8 storey window & thinking how nice it would be to go for a fly out there over the town.. & IMMEDIATELY social services moved the 'senile old man' to another apartment. Very smooth! Sid had a good chuckle over that one, too.

Good job guys. In the UK people in power, like mayors can travel the country, step into any restaurant, and sent the bills to the hard working taxpayers. We, ordinary folks get robbed in public view, and it s legal ! The politicians also have second homes, paid for by the taxpayer.

Mmm a lot of truth in that. I suspect it's because they want to deter as strongly as possible, the possibility that society, en masse, will take up this duty avoidance....that just scares the pants off them. Did you know that the Customs people have more powers than the Police, for instance? Which simply shows in my view that money, not peoples lives, matter most to the Government of the day. Always been that way.

The main issue in all European countries is not addressed here. The fact that pensions are not subjected to cope with inflation, most of the time it is taxed and is not enough to cover housing, medical needs and day-to-day cost of living. Address this and our elderly will be happier and won't resort to this.

I said in my 30's that if I had to walk around in my 70's in a supermarket deciding if I should buy a can of beans or a cheaper variety like I saw many pensioners doing in the 1970's I would start stealing in some way or other. Luckily I've not reached that stage yet but I've no moral problem with the idea. There's a ''charity'' (tax dodge) and mandatory maintenance housing company trying to rip me off at the moment - I just keep batting the paperwork around.

The government has been stealing from the pension fund for decades. So I take my hat off to the pensioners and salute them. The country is run by money greedy criminals - so it should not come as a surprise that the public follow suit. I personally won't steal from others because we are all in the same boat but I am certainly empathetic to pensioners who do what they have to do to survive.

I say, if you're destined to be on top rate benefits forever, start stashing in cash so the government doesn't see the true extent of your saving should you exceed the maximum savings allowance. Times are tough, pensions are small. Stash in a metal safe.

Cigarette "smuggler" John Atkinson stopped at Dover with £2000 worth of cigarettes got a 9 month custodial whilst the Tree Lovers woman who embezzled £84,000 gets 200 hours community service! I used to do a baccy run until UK government forced Belgium to increase their prices. Now it's not worth going unless you live in Dover. Cigarette cost doesn't drop significantly enough until you travel further East....Poland, Romania, Bulgaria etc. Dover port used to be extremely bad to get through and I got stopped on one trip but i'd always buy what I smoked and never have mixtures of brands. I never sold any anyway as what I bought was for my own use. I had 6kg of rolling tobacco and the goon who had me, his eyes lit up when he saw the box which i'd not hidden as there's no point. But he took me to an office where the grilling went on for three hours, often repeating the same questions he'd asked before. It was like something out of a Stasi movie. Eventually I was let go as he couldn't prove I was selling it and i'd more than proved it was for my own personal use. Over the years I went across to Belgium I found the goons tended to target single men or a group of men......NEVER a single woman or couple. They gradually eased off due to losing so many officers but now since Brexit I expect they will enforce the pathetic allowance harshly.

To be honest, on a more serious side, I’m always thinking ‘who has the right to say that we should pay customs and excise anyway’. We should be allowed to buy what we want from other countries, and sell at the price we want here too. I don’t call that a crime.

  • @grayztube1

‘who has the right to say that we should pay customs and excise anyway’. The government of your country. Surely you're not so naive to believe that all the taxes collected DON'T end up in the same box? NI contributions wouldn't cover the national health service + State Pensions so things like Excise and other forms of taxation are necessary to make up the difference. And even if you did import things duty free and sell them, would you pay income tax on what you earned and the extra NI contributions? Or are you expecting to access the benefit of all of the public services 'without' paying into the pot which provides them?

Long as you don't steal from poor people, I've no qualms with it. Any body with exponential money didn't work for the exponential part of it, they worked for the first part, then used faulty math to quadruple it. Like banks are allowed in the US to lent 1000 for every 100 they have. I"d be rich too if I was automatically able to multiply any money I have by 10.
