@Tash21 They did clash on the set a few times. Paul was really young & didn't give Burt enough respect for where he'd been & done in t/business. Therefore, Burt was rubbed the wrong way by someone who was a baby by comparison. However, they both admitted to their faults of behavior & found great respect for one another. Paul did state he felt t/strain between them got a better performance out of Burt. Burt realized he was wrong to think this "kid" didn't know anything. Has a chapter about PTA in his 2nd book. PTA also asked him to be in his next project "Magnolia" but Burt turned it down. Another HUGE career mistake on Burt's part, in my opinion. Burt had a long history of turning down parts he shouldn't have. Too damn stubborn for his own good! RIP BR.

Yeah, although he ripped PTA a bunch of times. He could of been in Magnolia but turned it down saying "I already made my movie with Paul Thomas Anderson, and I that was enough for me." instead he did hunters moon which was direct to video.

He was far from humble, let me tell ya :) There's a story of him getting on the Blade Runner set back in the day demanding to know why the lead role wasn't his! He was a nutter, but that stuff carries onto the screen and makes these guys compelling to watch. Same with Robert Mitchum. A great example is Sterling Hayden. If you don't know him off hand, he played General Ripper, the mad Army officer who is about to kick off WW3 in DR Strangelove. He also played the corrupt Police chief Al Pachino shoots in The Godfather. He has a unique presence on screen and in real life he was a total nutter! Just check out some old interviews with the man. Calling him an eccentric is a vast understatement!

Why would it be all over the newspapers? Has what happened with Harvey Weinstein (not to mention all the other Hollywood related stories) taught you nothing? Have you been on a film set? Then how would you have any possible idea how a story would get from a film set to a newspaper? Stories are kept hushed all the time. Until you have a valid question based on something other than your cognitive dissonance, don't bother me. @@coldwinter5710

Reynolds was the front runner for Boogie Nights for several months, but Good Will Hunting came out right before Christmas and people were really drawn to Robin Williams' performance. I actually think the right actor won that year, but both were worthy.

It's remarkable how fondly he speaks of PTA and the other actors, since there are a lot of stories floating around (mostly from the actors/crew members themselves) about Reynolds having a lot of fights on set, and not "fitting in" with the tight group of actors. Reynolds recently stated he hated working with PTA and had never even seen the film all the way through. So his acknowledgement in this speech comes as a surprise to me.

It's unfortunate he was so hung up on this role's character and didn't enjoy the work he did more. He was too concerned what his older fans might think of it instead of understanding there was a whole new generation of fans out there waiting for him. He needed to get over the subject matter of the film and embrace being a great "actor" in it! As a result, he didn't do a lot of press for the film and I believe it cost him the Oscar he deserved that year. Very sad for him. PTA also admitted he was pretty cocky directing the film and handled things poorly with Burt. Burt also wrote a nice segment about this role and PTA in his final book.
