BURROS - A DAY IN TWIN PEAKS, CA, WILD BURRO ROUNDUP

Үй жануарлары мен аңдар

52 burros rounded up during Twin Peaks, CA, roundup; overstuffed trap pen; loner baby brought in; burros crashing trap pen.
DreamCatcher Wild Horse & Burro Sanctuary, only 20 miles from these burros' wild Twin Peaks, California, home, is in litigation against the Bureau of Land Management to protect the wild burros' and horses' legal right to remain free on this land which is supposed to be designated for wild horses and burros, but they are outnumbered by livestock by more than four to one.
DreamCatcher, a 2,000-acre natural habitat sanctuary, is providing a home to wild horses and burros captured from this and other areas. Please help support them at Dreamcatcherhorsesanctuary.org. Thank you.

    My husband was watching this video and he has been a cowboy all of his life, they never mistreat livestock and only kill cows to eat in a very humane way. Their cattle is only grass fed and always roams wild. As a comment on the dead burro he says it was not due to lack of water, wild burros can last up to 15 days without drinking water when they are being chased. He is very experienced and in his opinion it could be multiple cramps from running so much it affects their whole body.

The burros are not "causing hundreds of thousands of dollars" in car accidents here. They need to drink. As I said to Linda Andrews, wild horses and burros are not camels; they need to drink. They need 8 to 16 gallons of water a day to stay healthy. Perhaps the can survive without water for a day, but this is not the say they can live or thrive. That would be a very urgent, temporary state of affairs.

"Odds are" is wrong. I don't manage my animals with "odds are"; I care about them and learn what they need. Your callous attitude is noted. Why you are hateful to me is anybody's guess. Wild horses and burros yes need management plans. Helicoper roundups are not "management"; removal isn't "management" any more than having a one sale is advertising strategy for Nike tennis shoes. Instead, they have a message, "Just do it." They have an advertising stratey, and they have a plan to make it happen. They don't just throw on a sale and hope people will start buying Nikes. Wild horses and burros on public land are a legal Resource. BLM is supposed to have a management plan for each area.

    Elyse Gardner Walsh A vet in the N. Australia studied the brumbies and found that they didn't travel to water for two or three days, this included mares with foals at foot. When animals go feral they need to be managed, without management they do destroy the environment. It might be callous to you, as in you you saying one of the men kicked the jack donkey to try and get it to move, ever seen a burro kick another? No way could a man kick half as hard. Wild life is not all daisies and rainbows, it is hard. Natural death is starvation. As for me being callous (as you stated) I have plenty of experience having been working with animals all my life professionally, mostly dealing with 'problem' animals. Cruelty did not play a part in my regime, my animals came first. However, it did make me a realist.

    Actually, the cowboys can do a good job, but on this day they were disgustingly inhumane. Keeping these animals in this pen all day with no water in this heat after running them to these extremes was inhumane, and if I could have got to court and back in time, I would have done so, and BLM would have been found to be in violation of their own Comprehensive Animal Welfare Program which is in place now (2021) but which was not yet in place in 2010. Nevertheless, the Wild Free Roaming Horse and Burro Act of 1971 was in place, and in it the government is charged that they must treat these animals humanely. This was not humane.

    What water truck are you referring to? I do not see a water truck in this video. But you are correct that there was a water truck out there to spray down the dusty earth and keep the working horses watered. So it was all the more egregious that no water was given to those burros all day long. I was there. It seemed hotter than 80F, and those spunky burros had run their hearts out. The BLM and/or roundup contractors are supposed to provide for the needs of these animals. I report on what I see; I do not change the story. The burros received no water while at this trap site.

  • @HumaneObserver

    @HumaneObserver

    5 жыл бұрын

    The water truck was wetting down the dirt to reduce dust. No water was given the captured animals. BLM never has water in their trap pens. The animals are not usually left in the trap pen fir more than an hour. The empty the trap quickly to make room for more incoming animals. But just as bad, I have seen animals stuck in the trailer for three hours as well. The usual custom is to get the horses off to temporary holding corrals where they spend the night and settle down. Usually this is because the BLM holding facilities like Palomino Valley or Broken Arrow are a good four hours away from where they are capturing wild horses in the high desert. And for the record, I don’t edit things out in order to create a fiction to make BLM Look bad. I will focus on aspects of the truth that are bad enough in themselves. I do not fabricate stories. I will also praise the Bureau of Land Management for doing things well and right and that benefit the horses and burros , and I will criticize when they don’t.

  • @HumaneObserver

    @HumaneObserver

    3 жыл бұрын

    The issue on this day was not a "water shortage" in the wild: the BLM had just chased these animals with helicopter over miles of sage and lava-rock-filled terrain on a day between 86 and 97 degrees Fahrenheit. Burros had been running for well over an hour, often for two hours or more, and at the end many were chased by wrangler on a saddle horse with the helicopter in close pursuit as the burro made a valiant last-ditch effort for freedom. Exhausted and extremely thirsty, these animals were forced to wait in the trap pen for over 8 hours with NO WATER. We now have the Comprehensive Animal Welfare ("CAWP") program in place and can bring charges against BLM for failing to keep to that standard they have adopted. Even so, BLM breaks with their own best practices too often. SLowly, though, if people will hold them to it, BLM gets better at things. Please consider supporting our work. Wild Horse Education are the only ones to litigate against inhumane handling, and we won every time. That means we have the law on our side. We cannot make people follow the law, but we can make them pay if ithey don't. THank you for your interest.

    Not kill them -- but to rehome them. We have too many feral burros and horses on public lands. They destroy the environment when their numbers rise, and they haven't any natural pedators to keep their numbers down. If we don't manage these animals, they will starve on the public lands where they live and also ruin the environment for native wild animals such as deer and sheep.

  • @HumaneObserver

    @HumaneObserver

    5 жыл бұрын

    These are truly wild animals, and they are prey animals. The implication here is that, number one, they are terrified of humans and human equipment. They will not go into a trailer unless they are forced in at this point. They would not “just go in.” The other thing to realize is that prey animals do not like to be in closed spaces. Even domestic horses need special training to comfortably and willingly enter a trailer. Prey animals are naturally claustrophobic, feeling trapped and unable to escape. Prey animals have their eyes on the sides of their head so they can see almost all the way around them selves. They are always in fear of being attacked and eaten. Humans are predators; cats and dogs are predators. The hardwiring, ie., the basic reactions to life are completely different between prey animals and predators.

    +Adan Gomez Horse slaughter is illegal in the USA. And yes, they are slaughtered in Mexico by the most heinous treatment and slaughter imaginable. I do know a few "vaqueros", from a neighborhood I lived in for many years - well. I even had one of them get me one of their marvelous saddles. And yes - most of them were good to their horses. Vaqueros would not allow what goes on in the slaughterhouses.

  • @HumaneObserver

    @HumaneObserver

    7 жыл бұрын

    Adan Gomez, how I wish what you say was accurate! I agree with the Kidfromstatenisland: Horse slaughter in Mexican abattoirs is a horses "worst nightmare," according to the animal husbandry professor and Colorado State University, Dr. Temple Grandin. The puntilla, a small boning knife, is used to stab the horse in the back near the withers until the spinal cord is severed and the horse collapses, paralyzed, still fully conscious but unable to move. The horse is then strung up by one hind leg, the throat is slit, and the horse bleeds out until losing consciousness. The terror and pain is unimaginable, especially as they smell the blood and the scent of fear produced by the preceding horses. True vaqueros are not in this picture. This is the most brutal form of horse slaughter, although none of it is "humane" because "humane" means no fear and no pain, and no expectation of either one of those things. Also, Mexican tradition condones horse tripping, a brutal "sport" in which horses are made to gallop in a round pen and the "sport" is to rope one or more of the horse's legs, which nine out of ten times causes a head-over-heels somersault, causing major injuries to the animals. I have seen two-year-old fillies used for this, and then the same horses used as "bucking" horses in the same rodeo. The horses are then shipped to slaughter. These poor babies; they are just babies, frightened out of their minds and abused for fun, sport, and "tradition." No, I would not want to be a horse in Mexico. In the care of a true vaquero, yes, but they are few and far between. BTW, horse slaughter is illegal in the United States at this time. There are no slaughter plants currently operating.

    I have to say, knowing how inhumane roundups used to be, this roundup was done humanely They are using flags, which is part of the natural horsemanship technique, not cattle prods, not sticks, etc. which is historically used on equines. The burros were trotting, most of the time, and to drive them 1/4 to 1/2 is not far at all. Burros also have an ability to go long distances at a trot and they are also able to go without water for far longer than horses are. One Jenny died? That is sad -- but I also know that too many burros and horses on public lands is destroying the environment and makes it unsuitable for our native mule deer, big horn sheep and other animals. I don't want to see wild horses and burros disappear from our landscape -- but without controls on their exploding populations, we risk losing our native animals. Burros are not wild -- they are feral. The same is true of the horse. I don't think ranchers should have cattle on public lands, either. They do their own share of damage and the law permitting ranchers use of public lands is outdated and needs to be changed. But again, I didn't see anything on this video that was cruel or abusive. Did the guy kick the jack? Maybe -- he definitely pushed it with his foot. None of the burros were dragged behind a horse or thrown down and tied, which is is something that happens at rodeos and makes me wince. These are excellent horsemen (possibly women?) out there doing a hard job that has to be done. That's the reality. I wouldn't say that any of these animals were abused.
