+Joshua King Yea it is crazy this was a really cool video. I have it from multiple childhood trauma. It's why everything takes so long for me to do, as pressure makes me probably flashback to the time when I had pressure for someone else to take control of my body. I too, was raised in state homes most of my childhood, so they were in total control and nothing was safe, as was not my abusive mother. My astrology matches everything that happened, but I JUST admitted I had PTSD. It was VERY hard. But I'm a logical Aquarian, everything started to click all my ways of hyper-vigilance and super arousal over easy things, I finally started getting, that I never had as a child. The term for "canary in the coal mine" I made for this is.... Musical savants of the trauma world, we see the bad stuff before it happens. It is so traumatic to not know how to survive to pay your bills, when there are so many unfair factions going on. Not everyone is born being able to fall back on inheritance or parents at 58! I have seen comments where people say they went back home to stay with there parents at that age. That lessons the chances of PTSD or burnout for sure. But what about orphans and people with more challenges in life. But it is plain abuse that is going on and I am glad I as an Aquarius, would never think of making up a sink or swim system.

Too many who go home to parent[s], do it out of extreme desperation because of no other solution or help...only to jump from frying pan into fire, Parent[s] badly dysfunctional can't help, and do things that make it worse. Very few can go home to parents or relatives. Imho, dysfunctional Early Childhood Development lousy programming, is where it all starts....that's most often from parent units being made so, too...they can't usually give what they never got. It's the 'gift' that keeps on giving, generation to generation. .

+Roman Fox , It's easy to feel trapped in bad jobs, hard circumstances that keep digging one in deeper into debt, troubles, can't find a way out of [whatever]. But it's also hugely about how we choose to look at whatever the circumstances are. No matter how bad something is, there are other ways to perceive it.. That does NOT mean to keep placing yourself in harm's way to keep the bad situation. But, understanding it differently, helps break the tie it might have on you....which can help you find other possibilities to try, to help yourself. A job, or a family situation, can feel really bleak, and one can feel stuck in it; changing how one perceives it, understanding how it got that way, helps emotionally detach from it, which tends to open up other avenues to try. Most of the time, whoever or whatever is plaguing you, is not doing it to your, personally, but because of other things...you just happen to be closest at hand. You don't have to stay there...you can find other safe ways or places to work, live, and learn to thrive. Please...look inside your heart...what dream did you used to have, that made your heart sing? What did you really want to be, when you were about age 10 or so? Is there even one person who helped you in the past, said a kind word or gave wise guidance, which you valued? Hold onto those memories, and understand that you, too, have something to give....if you are not getting, then try giving? IT seems to work that way with not only money, but time and talents, too....if you have not one, try the other...share of your time, talents or wealth; share your heart, if nothing else, paste a smile on your face when you see someone--anyone. A smile is free; give smiles to others, from your heart....that's the kind of smiles that make your eyes sparkle and crinkle at the corners...those kinds speak to people's hearts....and, will speak to your heart, too. THOSE things are something to hold onto, while working through the garbage/breakdowns, etc. that hit each of us. If I'd given up every time things looked bleak, or each time there was a breakdown [that is, got so bad, one might be huddled in a fetal position in the corner, twiddling a lock of hair and looking catatonic, for instance? yeah...that...or crying uncontrollably, unable to make sense of things...etc.] The thing that helped, was having at least one thing I could hold onto, like a security blanket or lifeline. Take the effort, even if you only have a cardboard box, to take care of your personal space...maintenance: get up, get cleaned up and dressed each day; make the bed, eat something as nutritious as you can....maintenance. Like the old saying "No matter what, chop wood, carry water"...that means, no matter what else might be happening, one still has to do the daily chores that sustain life and protect our bodies.....we each need to learn how to take care of ourselves, on our own, before we can ever expect to be happy with anyone else....this comes under "find how to learn to be happy inside your own skin..otherwise, you will have a hard time being happy with anyone else." Find things to do, like volunteering to help others who are maybe worse off than you, or that contribute to a better community....that takes the mind off one's own problems, and keeps the hands busy doing something productive. Gradually, purposely focus on finding things to be thankful for...even if it's stupid stuff, little stuff...just repeating to oneself how thankful one is for those little things, then bigger things....helps...just really making the effort to feel grateful for whatever It might start out feeling insincere, but it will, with practice, bring real feelings of gratitude, and from that, comes feelings of happiness, just for having a light breeze on one's face, the sunshine, clouds drifting through the sky, a bit of calming music, a scrap of food, or a drink of cool water when thirsty. One can stay in a hole of misery, or one can figure out how to climb up out of that place, and feel the breeze blowing and sun shining. It sure don't feel like it when one is down in a pit of despair, but, as one climbs, it gets better. Once one practices doing these things, it makes it harder to get knocked down into the pits. So, if you are in a dead-end job, or out of work....what can you do? Find something, use it as a stepping stone along your path, to get to where you'd rather be....but you gotta know where you'd rather be, and make good solid plans how to attain that goal...then start doing the small goals, to build towards the big goals. There's lots of advice online, local community colleges, community services...it's all around, but one must determine to find it, and, make effort to do the work to bootstrap oneself up outta the pits we each can fall into. Those are only temporary. IF you keep focusing on "... and don't see any light at the end of the tunnel.", if that's all your brain gets to hear running thru your mind...then you will be unable to see opportunities that might present themselves. Maybe consider how you talk to yourself inside your head...self-talk is very important! Talk nice to yourself, and it makes a difference! Find something nice to say...even if it sounds phony to start. CHALLENGE negative thoughts---most of those things are lies anyway! Ask the negative thoughts to prove they are real...mostly, those cannot..because negative thoughts are how OTHERS taught us about ourselves, and are usually not based in reality. The more you challenge the negative thoughts, and demand those prove their reality, the more those cannot, and the less negative thoughts will take up room in your head. Replace those with positive ones that are reality-based...and practice repeating those, instead. Anyway...my 2 cents. I really hope you find your light...maybe it's been hiding in a corner, or stuffed in a closet...but everyone has a light that needs to shine, including you! It's even possible, depending on circumstances, to shine that light, even flipping burgers or being a cubicle dweller....perspective!

Advice from been there: Disability system is struggling due to such enormous numbers filing for it. Staggering. Trying to foist 'em back at State resources, etc. The process can be just as abusive! MUST put paperwork together carefully; must have Multiple diagnoses; must persist; must get help doing it. Strongly advise seeking advocate to help you through process...someone with current experience. If you end up being denied a few times, it goes in front of disability judge...my experience was that guy was psycho-like in his threats at the end. Virtually all systems try to avoid diagnosing PTSD, and lists of other diagnoses....that is why to have at least three different ones. My judge said: "I cannot award based on any single of your DX's, but because of all three, and how those affect your ability to function, I award your disability"...then spewed threats of fines, jail, etc. retribution, if anyone found that I was faking it. I about lost composure on the spot..I felt wrecked. So, be prepared.

They have condensed the work of 5 people into 1 and they ask your opinion on things but don’t care at all what you think, they already made up their mind what they are going to do. It’s so fake. People who have never done your job constantly make changes on how it can be done better. It’s absurd. I can’t believe I’ve wasted this much time there.

If you had in childhood it is probably Complex PTSD. Sometimes this is misdiagnosed as Borderline Personality Disorder. It is important to get the right diagnosis, so you can treat the underlying trauma, instead of medicating the symptoms of Borderline which may not even be what a person has.

Multi-disciplinary approach that includes wholistic wellness and FUN is very important to successful healing. It is not covered by health insurances so unless you are part of a VA group with such programs, most people are out of luck. That is why I created the "Wellness Weavers" pilot project concepts. People that get paid to do their jobs are intimidated by a retired volunteer nurse that is now a Certified Humor Professional that may use costumed characters in research and for health edutainment and improv fun. Incorporating simple exercises, like "Brain Gym", or using music that have healing lyrics or calming sounds and then doing cross-body movements are free and been beneficial for some.

Shawn, I am so sorry you have been going trough a lot of heavy times. What worked for me, is first of all understanding that my system, my body and psyche need time to recover (and 1,5 -2 years is realistic minimum). Therapy and meds I think help too, as well as regular phisical activity (30 min walk can already make a change) and having support of other people (family, friends, communities, groups, etc.) but also the f-factor as i call it- the fun factor. making sure you find time to do things which you enjoy - some kind of hobby or activities that fulfill you- whatever it is - is essential part of self care. I hope you find your path out of this. I know you are working hard. Hug.

Great seminar, I'm viewing this 7 years after it was recorded and what occurs to me is how much of what has been labelled burnout in a person, is the social consequence of surviving narcisstic abuse in the workplace. I can imagine many scenarios where good people work too hard, under too much pressure, for too long, without enough support.. But like you said, that's 7th on the list of 10 things. I'm wondering if burnout is corporate speak for "narcissistic abuse syndrome" or cptsd. Good luck to anyone surviving it, it's rough. Believe in yourself. You will heal.

The segment on burnout really makes you think. Work overload being so low on the list makes you realize if your spirits are dying you won't be able to perservere. Cause think about when you 100% believe in something and are focused. You could overwork yourself to extreme amounts and somehow still maintain the will/energy to keep going. Not to sound too new agey, but It's really important to be In a place with good energy and good people.

i've been burned out for the last 8 years. I've lost my entire 20's and my mental impairments have made sure I wont ever be able to pursue my dreams. I have been suicidal for years. I can't read a book or watch a film, and I never feel like doing anything. I keep eating healthily and prioritising sleep and get out and move and see friends, but as soon as I try to do anything that is about a more long term progress or interest I block and break down in a nervous wreck.

This sounds like me, and the thing that has given me hope recently is understanding it through a polyvagal (or nervous system, somatic) lens. I’m stuck in dorsal vagal shutdown, and every time I try to expand out of it, there is a contraction that feels like a backlash. Check out therapy that works on achieving nervous system regulation. I believe that is my solution.

The individuals “in power” or who take part in creating continually stressful work environments don’t have the vision to research this subject. Thank you for sharing this. I think it’s true for many people that complete rest is the only way to heal and it’s so tragic that most people can’t do it! Hearing it from you is very validating. Our society is so incredibly shaming about not working! Even with all the knowledge I have about PTSD I still feel ashamed that I don’t work like a “normal” person. I struggled for years to work as much as I could and it just kept getting worse instead of better. What I’ve learned since is that in order to heal the nervous system, you need a baseline of safety. If you continue to be in an environment that is triggering stress responses, you can’t heal, you can only cope. For me that meant not working at all because work itself is a trigger for me. I’m privileged to have family that can support me to do that (for awhile anyway). But everyone deserves the option.

I’m curious, even though the government supports you, is there still a sense of shame about not working? There’s a stereotype about Germans being very exacting about time and work. I’m curious if that is true or is changing.

@@Taratreehugger @Taratreehugger Yeah... the thing is... on the one hand, we have this really great system in Germany (you can be sick for 1.5 years and get paid by the health insurance.) ... on the other hand, Germany has a very strong work ethic. In Germany, work is everything. So it very much depends on your personal social environment. If your social network is more politically left-wing, you are more likely to be accepted if you don't work. My friends and family are very supportive. For me, it's really impossible to work and heal at the same time. Healing from trauma is such a big deal. In my opinion, you should not work for at least 1 or 2 years if you have the opportunity. That's the only way. I think work takes up way too much of our lives anyway. But that's another topic. I've thought so much about the whole system in general and realised that far too much superfluous stuff is worked just to earn money to buy stuff you don't need.

I've been feeling so tired lately despite having lesser workload vs a few months ago, but I couldn't get myself together and be productive like before. There would be days I'd be productive then suddenly relapse, then I'd feel guilty why I was not delivering as before. She made a lot of very good points in this video. Especially on the reasons for burnout not being directly correlated to the amount of workload but more of the leaders and systems around you. Thank you for this! Now I have a better understanding. The very slow recovery is what scared me.

Excellent lecture. The analogy of employee burnout to the canary in the coal mine is very astute. Employees are a resource and, although their work capacity can be increased somewhat via motivation, training, etc., there are limits. Just like when a manufacturer overworks factory equipment, it won't last and ultimately leads to bigger problems for the company, like loss of quality, regulatory violations, lawsuits, and so on.

Many people and children get left at home in the process, they are very easily affected by get ahead more than anyone else marketing ploys, it's no wonder these signs are so cranky. These are the A-types that burn themselves out in the Astro-world. Aquarius Scorpio and Pisces can be, due to pain and tragedy though.

Be selfish at the same time as being thankful to yourr other half; the 2 can co-exist! 3. Look at Gabor Maté's stuff right here on Y/tube, when you're just BEING not DOING! He wrote a book called 'When the Body Says No'. I think it might help you understand what's happened. Peter Levine's work is also great and there's loads of it here on Y/tube, also. It might also be useful to look in to total release experience (TRE). Again, Y/tube. 4. Spend as much time as you can in the open air, just walking or being still with your planet. 5. Nourish your body well with lots of sleep, good foods and the right supplements. 6. Sorry if you think I'm being nosy/bossy, but I just felt the need to say this to you! Wishing you the very best of luck as you heal. x

Thanks for this video, I feel its provided some very useful insight into what might be happeneing with me internally at this time. I hope that becoming aware of this might help put me back into my life again. I used to love my occupation more then any other part of my life. Since leaving I've been considering a career change. Perhaps I should be looking in the direction of professional help instead. I think I might be suffering a life long case of CPTSD not related to work due to a traumatic upbringing, but it may have manifested in this way for me as well as the other chronic symptoms I've always had to deal with. Much appreciation.

Yeah it was rough, two years after I made my original post I was done, I was over my job, just going through the motions, I started looking for another job. She's right it was it took ages to recover, but I did.

This talk on burnout is such a timely and needed discussion. My greatest lesson learned from this talk? Even when you recognize that you are burned out, it lasts longer than we think. Dr. Puleo's proposed model is ground breaking and must see for organizations...burnout as form of PTSD is an important discussion that needs to happen. Thanks for getting the conversation started, Dr. Puleo!

This was very helpful. Thank you so much. I understand the concept and myself so much better now. I've had burnout for the majority of my life from C-PTSD from an extremely young age. I've noticed my whole family actually deals with burnout. I was getting so much better, SO much better. It only took me 3-4 months to recover (not fully) from a severely traumatic event that happened before I turned 16. Then, six months later, I got severely injured from a car accident and had to live on a recliner for 4-5 months. It's been about 6 months since the car accident.. but today, I am also affected by the severe traumas of my early and mid childhood with flashbacks, night terrors, severe dissociation. Not to mention, I'm most likely dealing with a nervous breakdown again. This is my later "childhood" I'm assuming? I have won the "unhealthiest 17 year old, physically and mentally award" Yay me! Nerve damage (feet, hands, back), bulged discs, circulation problems, hypothyroid, post-concussive syndrome, bulimia...etc. I won! *cough, *cough *BURNOUT. Anyone out there that feels alone, I just want to say that you are strong, you're definitely not alone, and give it time. You're life is craving a break. I highly recommend a healthy diet and even just a LITTLE exercise every now and then. I understand how hard it can be to even eat healthy food when burned out, yet exercise? Is this chick crazy? And reach out for talk therapy, and your compassionate, loving friends. Hell, get a dog you can talk to, but don't do it in public and don't tell anyone I told you to do that. Do some EASY stretching even. I promise you, it will make your day feel even .0001% better. Take care everyone. Hydrate! Laughter cures. MEDITATION I am a 17 year old that knows absolutely nothing, a spherical bastard!

I'm glad to see someone actually addressing the issue of "burn out". All I can add, agree with divert psychological... dont think you really recovery to 100%. Type of reverse of being totally competent to not being able to hold a tea spoon. Depletion of energy... and having to really motivate for simple task. Coping with the burn out is working with employers expectation. Sometimes irrelevant because it's an industry. But what is the best resource... taking emotion out of it and using other resource like empathy, practicalities ect. Don't take my heart and soul😆 it works better and I still meet with demand.

For more than on e year my life has been terrible and I had to go through things that were very difficult to deal with. It started with anxiety disorder and panic attacks and escalated to depression. this has been such an interesting perspective to hear. I'm from the UK and 5yrs ago had to leave my job due to lack of support and reasonable adjustments agreed by access to work. I had been with that employer for 9yrs before asking for help. I have numerous physical developmental and mental health challenges that meant I could no longer do my job without support. through the support of my local mental health hospital I sought to get myself heard and although I successfully won my tribunal on the grounds of disability discrimination it still haunts me to this day. I have constant nightmares where I wake up sweating and unable to resettle back to sleep. I can't say the managers name as it causes to much upset. I feel like I'm stuck in that time and realised I too have experienced burnt out. when I saw a therapist I was told I do not have PTSD but I think she is mistaken. I try not to think of it as that but in reality I do fit the prescribed symptoms and I hate it. I hate how I've been affected like so but get that this is how my body has allowed itself to cope with the trauma. I can so relate to your video. Well the bits I understood lol. I'd love to meet someone like you in person so I could talk properly about what I've experienced and continue to experience. Sorry for the long message and thanx ❤

burnout leads to ptsd, but not the other way around - at least it makes no sense to me. In my specific case i was in a horrible working environment for a relatively short period of time for about 6 weeks, overstressed, overworked, overirritated, underpaid and underslept, which lead to a burnout that came afterwards and experienced some of the same symptoms as with ptsd (panic attacks, anxieties...)...but it is not actually a chronic disorder, just temporary symptoms until your health eventually stabilizes after a period of months...then the symptoms are less and less present... but I don't know, it really depends on a specific case, i think the burnout can also happen slowly over a period of years.

  • @biancamichelle11

glutamin111 hi! It's actually the exact opposite of what you described that commonly occurs. Trauma is what causes PTSD. A person cannot develop PTSD without a psychological or physical trauma. PTSD is a chronic condition that can mimic the same effects of being overworked 24/7 even if they are not. This is because of the unhealed and unprocessed trauma trapped in their mind and body. After time this will cause adrenal burnout. If a person is stressed and overworked, they can also have adrenal burnout with the same symptoms as PTSD but it is not PTSD. It is Adrenal Fatigue/burnout.

The entire department left in fairly rapid succession. He inferred that I was suffering from burnout, after intimidating me to resign. I had physical health issues which were hidden, and rare. I had physical proof in the form of a surgical scar, yet he continued to say I was making it up.

Along with having survived domestic violence, my son went in military which threw me in shock especially when he went to Iraq. I ended up living with my 80 year old parents. I avoided men not having been able to cope with emotional stuff since I had to single parent and really have no trust in my judgment since abusive men seem to collect around me. Abuse involves keeping a woman trapped in a situation beyond what she can endure. Noone GETS the whole notion of being a battered woman. Along with this I had a concussion. I have what is termed multiple trauma. Add being over 60. Add being divorced. Add the loss of a friend I hung out with. Add economic deprivation. Add being finally thrown in with people my own age when I don't have the maturity to handle it. Learned helplessness is a fact of being controlled by someone mist of your adult life. That includes my friend who abandoned me.

It really sounds like that info might be very enlightening/helpful for you both. Imho, these kinds are perps of most abuses, AND, set-up their kids to be vulnerable targets for more of it later in their lives; people don't come from stable functional families and get broadsided by abusive partners, usually, they are "groomed" to be vulnerable. Kids grow up only understanding certain behaviors are "normal", because of not knowing any other ways...that programming stays with us, makes us magnets for the perps.

This lead me to meet a guy far away, to escape, and he abused me. Threat me with knife. Killed my baby in my stommach. And when all this happened,my friend had killed himself, but I was so controlled so I did never talk to my friend. I found out he had committed suicide, several months later when I gave just escaped my abuser. At this time I had a relative who was taking care of me, I thought til she started trying to control me and stood in my way of recovery and just expected me to smile and go to work she didn't understand how sick I was from all of this. She threw me out cause I continued therapy and refused to do what she said was good for me,cause she was wrong. You think my brain and body just move on from this without PTSD again? You're wrong.

I just realized today that I have the symptoms of burnout syndrome (and it's sad to think that I just realized it when I'm already near the last phase). I'm still a student, and I work at a campus publication. The thing is, I am not paid to do graphic works and articles. At first, I was enjoying it. But since our Editor-in-chief was replaced by a fellow coworker, the whole mood of the office has also changed. We went from a carefree editor to a very strict you-can't-impress-me editor. Doing articles and graphics became mechanical for me, as if it was judged based on how applicable it would be, rather than based on its content. I actually have no problems with our editor. It's just that doing all the publication-related stuff was becoming a form of job-completion instead of an achievement. And the reason why I can't get out of it is because without me, the publication would suffer. (Many people had already quit. There are less than 10 workers writing for an audience of 5,000 students). Not to mention, I would be called selfish if I left the organization in its ailing state. So yeah. I'm stuck, but I'm hoping for a recovery after I actually see a psychologist.

This is a great talk. I'm not sure how it showed up on my feed, but for 6 years (2007-2013) I dealt with one medical emergency after another in my family and took care of my mom as she had ovarian cancer. After that I had a cancer scare (2016) and surgery that left me with a paralyzed vocal cord. And alongside it all, for the last 9 years (2013-2022) I have been working on major projects under intense deadlines and with excessive overtime (like 50%+), with little reward. A couple of years ago I made a plan to move to a mountain town. I currently live in a small apartment and live quite frugally overall to make that dream a reality. We know what real estate has done these last two years, so as a single person I feel I need work twice as hard to make it all happen. For several years my cortisol levels have been sky-high (never coming down in any of the testing I've had done), and created autoimmune issues. And yet, here I am, continuing to work so I can take care of myself when I'm older (I'm in my 40s now). And with Covid an overseas vacation has been put off for the third year in a row. Is this burnout? Does it take longer to get through it the longer you've experienced it?

Dr Geri, this was an astounding insight. I burned out 7 years ago. Noone wanted to understand that I actually had cptsd which took 4 years to figure out. I basically came all this way with practically zero medical support. Psychiatrists throw anti-depressants at me and no one wanted to recognise the PTSD aspect to this. The ADHD aspect has also been ignored. I ended up with rheumatoid arthritis after 4 years. I am finally in a place to heal. I got disability... Not for anything I can point a finger at but rather due to severe short term memory problems. You are the first person to put this all together and even though I am finally healing, it's gratifying to know that I was right and all the Drs were wrong 😁 Thank you 🙏

Experienced burnout a few times. Cptsd , a deep dive study into narcissism and a few autoimmune illnesses( comorbidities) eventually led to misdiagnosed autistic spectrum occurring in family system. Undiagnosed baby boomer parent(s?) The medical and psychological industry are operating from the dark ages. Trauma lives in the body which renders CBT useless and often retraumatising. Hypervigilance kills you in time with the body/mind shutting down. Ptsd causes uncontrollable tremors, insomnia, night sweats, shakes etc. Nutritional health and sobriety are pivotal for healing. All this occurred post 20 yr ssri med withdrawal I was put on for endocrine related depression( regular week of pmdd) . Look into gut dysbiosis because if you’re dealing with burnout/ptsd, it’s likely your GI tract is also in a bad state. Thank goodness for my spectrum brain that helped tunnel vision a focus to heal myself. That focus only happened when I cleared chronic inflammation (brain fog) and instilling better boundaries. There were a couple of burnouts over the decades and all around family, sadly!

It amazes me that 8 years after this video, we as a society still have not been able to prevent this problem. In few countries do companies have to account for the high burn-out rates in their company. It is often perfectly preventable, yet companies choose to harm and throw away their staff rather than prevent it. A CEO who deliberately breaks someone's leg is prosecuted, but for inflicting psychological damage they go unpunished. This video, like many others, sums it all up nicely. But unfortunately, it offers no answers on how to recover efficiently from burnout....
