Actually had a house fire several years ago. The home was a total loss. Unbelievable how quickly flames engulf everything. There is no time to go get things you think you want to save. You get your family (and pets if you have them) and get out!

This has actually been an obsessive thought of mine since I was around 12. Having our home destroyed by a fire is my worst case scenario, I still run through my “save list” on a monthly basis. Over the years I’ve narrowed it down to: Family, pets, document box (because, though not impossible, it would be a pain in the butt to get all our certificates replaced), phones, laptops. The list used to be a lot longer but, not surprisingly, it was easy to cut down once I actively started practicing minimalism and releasing my emotional attachment to objects. Even if we do loose everything, I’ve finally feel like I’m in a mental place where I could deal with it, as long as all our family is safe! Love all your videos!!!

Hannah Amos I obsessed over this when I was really young but that was so long ago. I wonder why it stuck around for you into adulthood. It’s a complex trauma to contemplate, but usually the fascination dissipates over time. Seems like we just worry about random shit our whole lives and that’s what holds people back.

When I was young I actually thought that if my house would have burnt, I would be okay with. That's probably because I always felt like I have too much stuff, but didn't know how to get rid of all of it. If my house would have burnt, I wouldn't have to think about it (I know it's kinda not okay but I was young 🤷♀️)
I'd get my cat out the house and then waltz right back in and bask in the flames

The videos and channel are showing up as recommended, I generally watch prepper shows, scammers getting scammed, how to adhd, and some other randomness and this showed up. There’s another who is extreme minimalist who is showing up too but she’s not as relatable IMO
Your channel is so refreshing! After being bombarded with content that's filled with over used color correction, blaring background music, obnoxious humor and constant advertisement placement or the good ol "subscribe, like and comment" lines. It's a breath of fresh air when something like this exists. I'm glad i stumbled upon your channel. Side note. I found it odd at first when you sign off with "Til next time" and click your tongue. Since that's how I usually say a farewell to someone. Just one of those small things
This channel is actually great. Started downsizing this year and really discovering some basic minimalism. Definitely inspired to clear out again when I move next month.
I really don’t know how I watched all your videos but one thing than I’m sure and that is this channel the best quality content about minimalism. Thank you for your great effort on this platform.

The Burning House was my absolute favorite and I still think about it sometimes because I really think it boils down the 'Do I really need any of this stuff that is SUFFOCATING ME?!!!' problem I have. I found it a few years after a hurricane had rolled through and destroyed most of our household including all of my favorite books in a flood. As a result I'm pretty laid back about all of it disappearing in a natural disaster and me being fine because that's how it was for me. Then it's just like a practical question too, like, maybe I should start adulting better and put my documents I want to grab in an easy to grab and go kinda space?? Instead of the mess my papers are in reality haha. I had no idea it was the same person that did all of that, that's amazing!
"I'd have to choose my health over getting their approval" - this struck such a chord. One of my oldest friends wants me to stay living in this town which I never wanted to move back to, have always planned to leave, and which I am quite sure is damaging my health both physical and mental. He meanwhile hasn't visited it in ten years and hasn't seen how it's changed and I want to leave. Thank you for that insight!
trying to get rid of stuff because I hate having useless junk and your advice of "imagine it burned up, would you buy a new one?" actually really helps me realize that i don't really WANT to keep things. i just feel like i should because I already have it
I just love your minimal house..so calming.
Wow! 20K! I was here when you had around 500! Great, people see your quality! I love how you always make us wonder about life. That is your magic. Thank you for that!
really enjoy watching your videos! super concise yet unique concept, so different from any other youtube videos I've watched. Keep up the awesome work!
During a cross country move in a howling winter storm of snow and ice, I watched our moving truck flip and roll, which was being driven by 2 loved ones. NOT A SINGLE OBJECT in the truck mattered when compared to the value of human life. Both loved ones walked away from that incident miraculously. I've also experienced the aftermath of a house fire which happened when I was not home. In the end, things are things. Memories are yours to keep. Loved ones are irreplacable (people, animals, plants)...
Thank-you for all the thought and work you put into your videos. They are wonderful!
I had a fear of fires/hurricanes/etc. as a kid. I kept a backpack with my favorite photos and some essentials packed and ready at all times, and I would update the pack often. Now I'm a minimalist. Maybe being aware of disaster is, in a sad and emotional way, kind of good for showing us that we don't need to be so materialistic.
I live in Northern California, and had to make this decision last November. 1. My kids, 2. then pets and supplies 3. Photos and documents 4. Due to textile allergies, I had to pack my clothes too. 5. Quilts Luckily, I only had to evacuate for one night. My house remained safe.
Like a lot of other people commenting, I’ve binged all of your videos and I am IN LOVE with your editing, messages, humor. I don’t know what I did to deserve stumbling upon this channel. Keep up the amazing work. -kenz
I really love this perspective. I've been minimizing my possessions for about three years and the waves of decluttering are so random, but than maybe not- they tend to come about when I feel severely stressed. It helps me cope. I have gotten rid of some things that I would have told myself in the past I could NEVER part with. I've learned (so far) that any item I own, although I may really enjoy it, is totally ok to be without. The the only "things" (but not things) I would grab would be my kid and my pug!
My dog. Instant answer. My familys apartment burned when I was a kid, we all got out safely but everything we owned was ruined. I remember my family stressing out trying to find a pair of shoes for me before we left the building. I wore my moms boots outside. Now I live alone, but I love my dog and she would be the only thing I cared about saving. Items can be replaced. (I keep my passport in my car anyway :P)
That's weird... The burning house idea is actually what I did when I was a kid tidying my room for the night. I always prepped a bag with my favorite toy, book and snacks and put it next to my bed, just in case something happened... Looking back, I guess I was pretty aware as a child !
the senpai we didn't knew we needed.
I know what I would grab if there was a fire. I've known for years. 4 things. 1-laptop bag (contains laptop, charger, usbs and some pens and notebook) 2- handbag (contains wallet, phone, portable charger and keys) 3- accordion folder that contains all my paperwork. 4- My overnight/emergency bag (contains 2 sets of clothes and basic toiletries) I always have this packed in case I need to go somewhere. I don't like to suddenly have to pack things so I consider it necessary for my life. I have used this bag many times. I have tried to live minimally for several years now. I consider these 4 objects to be my most important as I can live off only these. Whilst they do contain other things, I like the simplicity of only ever having to grab 4 things rather than bundle everything up to go anywhere.
I just started watching your videos tonight! All of them are great and I can’t wait to see more from you.
This video came up at the right time it seems. I just stopped with my current studies, and I will work... I have never worked before, and somehow it feels a bit depressing, like it's a step down from university. Okay, I am rambling. Point is I really liked what you said at the end, 'What's the stuff you actually value?'. I am going to be thinking about that... Thank you
I found your channel earlier today and I’ve watched every video. I love what you’re doing here and can’t wait to see more, keep it up.
This channel is SO DAMN GOOD. You've definitely earned my subscription.
Two words about you videos......... very very entertaining.........still practicing my minimalism
Yes. This channel‘s gonna blow up. Love the content. So refreshing! Binge watched all your videos tonight! Greetings from Germany
I'm going to add another comment to the one I just posted because fire safety is very important to me: I want to encourage people to not have anything in a place that would block or slow your access to doors and windows if you have to get out fast in an emergency. I want to encourage people to look around in the places where you go to school, work or elsewhere so you know to get out in an emergency.---When the ocean liner Empress of Ireland sank rapidly at night in 1914, many of the survivors were from the crew and not because they didn't try to help the passengers who were unfamiliar with the ship's deck plan (the Empress had sailed only hours before) but because they had been instructed to know the ship's layout so well that they could get out on the open deck even in darkness. Even a little knowledge and preparation can save our lives.
Glad I found you! Love your personality and content. Videos are short and super straight. You get the point and then " till next time". Don't feel like wasting my time on some random videos that never get to the point. Keep going!
I literally watched all your videos in two days and last time I was watching you were at 9.1k. I love to see your mindset and vocalizing it for the rest of us and your personality and creativity are awesome! Keep up the awesome content, we all love watching!
Thank you for not only thinking outside the box, but outside the storage unit in which the box is sitting. 😄 Your content is always so creative and yet sooo practical and useful. I’m doing this exercise as soon as I stop typing. 😉
When I was six years old, the kitchen in my house burned down. I was the first one to spot the fire, then I run to get my mom and one year old sister. I thought, at the time, that the entire house was going to burn, that the whole building was going to collapse... I had been playing with a little glass chicken when it happened, and once we were out on the street the only thing I would say, looking at that little glass toy, was "this is the only thing I saved!" over and over. Now it sounds silly, but at the time it felt like my biggest faillure... That there were so many important stuff in that house and I didn't reach for any of them. I Just ran to my mom and sister. This video made me realize why that was such a pivot time in the formation of my psyche and maybe why I want but struggle so much with letting things go... That little glass chicken became so important to me, so vital, yet such a reminder of my inadequacy, that from that moment on I placed my things on a pedestal, my things became my memories and I couldn't get rid of my memories, even the painful or stupid ones. But then this video made me realize another thing. I didn't only save that glass chicken. I saved the two most important women in my life. And that makes means I didn't fail after all.

wow love the accordion. I would take that for sure.
Truth be told, I think about this every month or so. I’d take my cat (first and foremost), my gray folder (all my important documents), and a tiny box that has all the sentimental things from my childhood. It may seem silly, but I hold onto my childhood with a relentless grip. It’s what I miss the most in life, and what makes me smile on the worst of days. My clothes, my tech, and everything else can burst into flames, I don’t care. Lol
Really makes you think about the value of most of the crap we fill our houses with!!! Keep the videos coming!!!
I watch alot of minimalist videos. Your channel is different in a good way. Most of my stuff is always packed or stored in a way that can be grabbed and be loaded up in the car, but the first things I'm grabbing is all of my camping gear which is always packed ready to go. Awesome video!

I love your empty place! It's just like my apartment. I can leave and not think about a burglar taking anything that will be of value to him (or her).
Your videos are so calming for my anxiety, except this one haha. Of course I did get anxious thinking about my house burning and what will I take (my camera, I am photographer and I am poor so I cannot invest another 4,000 dollars on a camera and lens) I think anything other than my income and passion source, I could let the rest burn. It will be hard to start over but I will be fine. Makes me think about all of the things I own but I can live without. Thank you for another wonderful video!
What a great method of deciding what really matters! Too I'd like to respond and add to Laura's comment below about having been in a real fire and how quickly it spreads: I heard from a safety expert that IF A FIRE CANNOT BE CONTAINED IN 30 SECONDS THEN GET OUT. ---Also a firefighter told me that because of the toxic fumes given off by burning materials such as plastics ,even more so than in the past, he would even wear a respirator OUTSIDE a burning house. Get out and keep a distance from a burning structure.
