Burden Begs the Question: Just Who Does Mikael Åkerfeldt Think He Is?

I'm back with more Opeth today. I'm kinda thinking "Burden" should've won the poll. :) And that's all I need to say, really.
I watched Ghost of Perdition at Red Rocks. Not sure when you'll see it. I think my next song will be Hessian Peel. Sound good to you? Thanks for watching! :)

Here's Mikael on that: "I didn't have an ending for the song; there was a few options to end a nice song like that. Either you end on a high note with a nice chord or a fade out or something. But I just came up with the idea that we should end it in a freaky way and I'm just basically playing this ending lick on the nylon string guitar and I told Fredrik to de-tune the guitar in real time as I was playing. So obviously it sounds very ugly but that was the whole purpose. We didn't know if it would work or not but it did."

Watershed is my favourite Opeth album and in my top 5 albums of all time. Doesn't get enough love from fans, IMO. I like the end of Burden. I heard that it was because they didn't know how to end the song, but it works perfectly, moving from the beauty of Burden to the far more sinister Porcelain Heart. Nice, drama free and seemingly genuine reaction. If you're doing Hessian Peel next, I'll stick around. The Lotus Eater and Hessian Peel are both fantastic.

At some point you'll probably be expected to do Black Rose Immortal. It's sort of the 'Plaaaay Freeeeebird!!!!' of Opeth shows, but a lot of fans see it as their magnum opus. It's an older song so the production is much rawer with less keyboards and organs and the harsh vocals are probably the most demonic they've ever been, but it also has lots of acoustic sections, and just generally great riffage. Also it's 20 minutes long, but if you get into it, it doesn't feel like it. It's still a big commitment though.

Iirc Mikael Akerfeldt has even said that David Gilmour is one of his idols guitar playing wise. He definitely said he is not going for fast, impressive, shredding solos but instead melodic, emotional, soulful soloing. So the solo section is Mikael and Fredrik taking turns and I believe it is Mikael first, then Fredrik, then Mikael again, then Fredrik one more time and then they go into a duet. Fredrik can do the shred type solos as you might be able to guess because he has those very virtuoso fast licks in his playing although he keeps it still strictly melodic because Mikael told him to ;) Also, the organ solo is the shit :) But is it a Mellotron? Or a Hammond? I think it's a Hammond.

Opeth and Dream Theater are kind of those bands who really make someone think that writing a good epic music piece is not an easy task... You have to be study theory for making these kind of musics... The little micro kinds odd beats, solo clarity, vocal layers etc are those things normal people skip... And say Yes!! It's good... But actually these kinds of musics are MASTERPIECES...

DT could break down each & every not of what they are doing and why plus tell how it follows music theory, chord progressions, which scale/mode that it's in/ect/ect. If i am not mistaken i think every member has a degree in music theory. That being said, Opeth imho blows them out of the water. I guess an analogy would be to compare Yngvie Malsteen to David Gilmore, sure YM is more of a technical virtuoso player, but he does not have the feel/soul of DG's playing. Rest notes are important people. So are sustains & bends.
