I always hav a DSMB with me on dives. It is rarely asked that I use it, as the guide usually has one, and I have hardly ever seen another diver carrying one. One time, I was on a dive vacation in Cozumel, and we were diving with a group. This was, probably, the first or second dive on the second or third day of a 7 day trip. Towards the end of the dive, the guide would typically send up his own DSMB and we would, as a group, start the ascent. On this particular dive, the guide inflated his DSMB, and released it, as usual, but his line broke and the SMB shot up to the surface. The guide looked around and saw the SMB attached to my BCD. He pointed to me and gestured to deploy my SMB. I saw what happened, and immediately knew what he ws asking me to do. I had practiced a few times at my home dive site, so I was able to deploy my own DSMB without embarrassing myself, and we were able to safely surface. The moral of this story is, always take your own DSMB on a dive trip, even if the dive shop that you are diving with doesn't require it.

Question guys: has anyone sent up two SMB's on the same line in the event of emergency and how did people on the surface react? Going a step further had anyone sent up a slate or wetnote notes up on the second SMB explaining the emergency. Really curious !

#askmark As you said on the video about DSMB, you wouldn't send more then two to the surface, so my question is: If I were in a group of, lets say, then divers shall I choose to send the buoys on either ends so the boat would know the divers are between those buoys, or is there no real roule?

Hey Philip, a SMB Is a Surface Marker Bouy, usually inflated before a entry off a boat ( for use on a drift dive for example ) a DSMB, is a Delayed Surface Marker Bouy, and that’s deployed usually after a dive as you’re going back to a boat as mark said, usually at around 5m or so on the safety spot, ( but can be deployed from deeper depending on the length of line on the reel or spool ) I hope this helps! a smb is much smaller and is inflated usually by mouth on the surface. a dsmb is much larger and can be inflated by an octo thru a hole in the bottom, as well as other ways by mouth or inflator hose off the bcd, at depth but usually on a safety stop. the biggest difference besides the size is a dsmb has a pressure relief valve in case it's over inflated. if you release a smb from depth it might explode on it's way to the surface.

Has anyone else had an issue with idiot boaters or jet skiers grabbing your smb?
