Bunny Hops | MTB Skills: Practice Like a Pro #23
Спорт
In this episode, Simon helps @linnearooke get on the right track for Bunny Hops! It's a very unique skill in mountain biking that requires the rider to actually push the bike around a bit by pulling up on the handlebars, and also pushing them forward to complete the arc.

ABOUT SIMON LAWTON
Following his own Pro Downhill mountain bike racing career, Simon Lawton (Owner and Founder) has spent the last 25 years analyzing the top riders in the world to understand the tiniest details that contribute to their greatest successes, and also any weaknesses that are holding them back. With an exceptional understanding of kinesiology, Simon has developed his own teaching curriculum that explains the incredible relationship between human and machine. He has trained top pro mountain bike racers across the world, and his foundational techniques apply equally to beginner riders. His on-bike drills allow you to break down complex skills on the bike and develop correct techniques.

ABOUT LINNEA ROOKE
Linnea has been racing locally in the pro category, but until this year she had almost no formal training and was held back by major gaps in her technique. While she was able to carry speed well on straight downhills and high-bermed turns, she lacked foundational cornering skills and was timid in the air. In Feb 2020, she met up with Fluidride to help with a filming trip in Baja, and was fascinated by Simon's teaching methods. Wanting to be part of this mission, she left her career in healthcare in July 2020 to officially join the Fluidride team as COO. We started filming this series to document her journey of cleaning up bad habits, adding new skills to her toolkit, and chasing her dream of riding with style.

100% agree.
I truly love how many different approaches there are to this technique, literally everyone who can hop has something different and new to share. Great addition to the collective of killer hopping videos!
Despite being very comfortable bunny hopping on a BMX bike (and up to 36" last time I could really try, when I didn't have wrist injuries), a long 29er is a different animal, so I went out practicing yesterday using some things in here, and improved a bunch! He mentioned filming yourself, which I second. I did and saw I was shifting my weight much farther back (like for a manual) than I thought I was. The other thing I realized is that with the length and height of a mountain bike, it's almost like you have to wait half a second after pulling the front up to push forward, or else you have a low quick hop instead of a higher, more leisurely one, so also give that a try; it's more like pull-pull-pull-then-push rather than just a quick pull-push.
My favorite channel on KZread. Simon , your the easiest guy to listen too on all of KZread. Not just MTB. One thing , that high speed hop looked more English than American,
I hope I age healthy as this man

New to the channel over in the UK, watched the manual video, went and practiced and made the most progress that I have in years, the tip on pulling shoulder blades together and down really helped. Really keen to get out and practice bunny hops after this video.

This is the first video I've seen on this channel and my first reaction before the camera focused on Simon's face was like "Damn this young dude has a deep voice for his age and ripped arms for a mountain biker". I totally like the idea that you don't need to perform a complete manual for the bunny hop. Great video and channel btw!

this tutorial is more of the classic american bunny hop and it can go really really high. Lee puts out a video that gets the job done to hop small things (and easy to learn), but according to him if you want to do big hops, its basically back to this technique
👍 really helping!!!
The best explained you are the best teacher respect to your teachings and yes shes a dam good rider as well 😀
Load, pull, push. I’ve just taught a fellow fifty+ rider by using this as a spoken mantra. She liked how speaking it out loud at normal talking speed helped her lock on & time doing the three driving elements, she wasn’t worrying about peripheral things. Finally she’s feeling confident to go on one of our local flowing blue/red downhill trails where there’s a need to either bunny hop a dozen water-bars (fun) or crawl over them at slow speed (a drag). Result; thank you👍.

In the old bmx days..70's & 80s we called the modern day bunny hop a Bronco..because it resembled a bucking bronco. The bunny hop was the English bunny hop of today. Made it a lot easier to distinguish the too.

we need another more in depth video on this. Especially focusing on centered body position and how to lift the wheel with the arms, and the third part about shoving the bike forward. And how this approach contrats with the manual approach where movement of lower body moves farther back for a manual initiation

The way they are hopping in this video is how I naturally do it. I felt like I was wrong because other videos emphasized shifting your weight way back into position for a manual.

Super interesting as always. As you probably know, you are proposing a different technique with less steps in it from the 'normal' pre-manual to explosive stand and tuck/scoop back with feet. Looking forward to trying this to see if it gets me higher by pulling up on the bars instead of trying to raise the front with the manual technique first
@Fluidride
3 жыл бұрын
Surprisingly I've never watched any tutorials online or taken any classes on coaching technique. I prefer to just relay to riders what it feels like to me to ride after years of wanting to be the best rider I can. I actually started coaching before anyone I know of (1996) so there were no classes to take or KZread videos to watch. I do the same with yoga and other things I teach. Teaching is easier for me without any memorization of how to do things, or even without knowing how others teach it. Teaching is very personal and internal for me, even though I do share it with a lot of folks. I am often asked about manuals and hops, which you might have noticed I addressed in the video. Thanks for continuing to watch Oliver!

I mean, this is a late answer, so you probably know it already. "Pre-manual" gets you higher. Since you can pull up the front wheel higher.

If you want to learn how to turn on the front wheel for a switchback, we teach that on our website at www.fluidrideonline.com. It's free for 2 weeks so you could see that at on charge. That is the most advanced way to do REALLY tight switchbacks, but is not the fastest in most instances. Linnea and I demonstrated proper switchback form earlier in this series which you can find on this page. hope that helps! -Simon
