Bunmi's Mystery Gut Illness and What I've Learned

Do you think it was gut stasis or gut obstruction? On Easter Sunday 2021, I came home to find Bunmi hunched over in pain and refusing food so I rushed her to the emergency vet. I made this video to help educate on others on what symptoms to look out for and what they can expect at the vet visit and recovery.
Part 2 will be about how I re-bonded Turbo and Bunmi after we brought her home.

Hi everyone! This video is longer than I wanted it to be and I tried my best to be as concise as possible. There are chapters so you can skip through to the sections you want to see. I have more information I'd like to share on gut stasis and gut obstructions. Would anyone be interested in that? I will also do videos on how I gave Bunmi her syringe medications and what it was like to re-bond them ❤️

I'm interested! I lost my bunny to stasis on Sept 15, 2021. I still cry like a little kid missing him. The vet bill was $3,200...paying for a vet when your sweet bunny didn't make it is a kick in the teeth. Especially since I blame my vet. I just paid it all off and now...well, I got two more bunnies in addition to the one I still had and all three of my fluffy darlings go to the vet next week. 😬🥺🤣😂🤣 But this time I DO have insurance (United States) until I can build up a savings buffer for bunny medical bills. Your videos are the best I've run across. So happy I found you.

Dropping a note to say how much I like and appreciate your posts. I have two adoptee rabbits that came into my home 15 weeks ago. A M/F (fixed) bonded pair, likely brother and sister, roughly 3 1/2 years old. She's "Tinker" and he's "Tailor." I am in New York City, and I found one provider for pet insurance here, Nationwide. They are not the only insurer of rabbits in the country, but they are the only one in New York. My plan has a $250 deductible per year and then pays 70% of the vet bill. My co-pay is the other 30%. Unfortunately, Nationwide doesn't cover transportation to/from the vet, which would be in the hundreds per incident as well. Hope this is helpful to someone. My best to Bunmi and Turbo and their wonderful mom.

Good on you for taking her to the vet and paying for the bill. Our bunnies had quite a few GI stasis episodes caused by gas pain, luckily we never had to go to the emergency vet. We have meloxicam (vet prescribed because we are long time bun owners the vet trusted us to administer medication) and simethicone which is non prescription baby gas medication from chemist warehouse (the brand we use is Infacol, cost 13 dollars and you do need to discard 28 days after opening but it's a small cost comparing to afterhours vet) at all time, and as soon as one of them seem in pain and uninterested in food, we give them the two medication and try belly massages as much as they can tolerate(and if we hear loud sound from belly confirming they had gas) every 2 or 3 hours. If their body temperature started to get cold we'd syringe feed warm water and critical care once or twice depending on how long they stayed in the stasis. They'd usually come out of the stasis in the same night. We found the earlier we notice the issue the easier it is for them to come out of it. In the past we don't notice until come home from work like 6pm then we thought maybe it's not stasis and waited two more hours to see if they'd eat voluntarily then they'd be in pain for hours and we don't get to sleep until 3am because we started medication and check ups so late. Now if we spot the pain really early on and give them medication straight away, they'd come out of it by 10pm. But every bunny is different, our two late bunnies rarely had gut stasis in their whole lives and they were eating everything. But our current bunnies are on much simpler diet (because they had so much stasis we gradually cut any gas inducing food out of their diet now, so no fruit at all, only bok choy and cos lettuce at veggie time, I feel bad for them) yet they still had so much stasis. I'm actually seeing our vet today to discuss what could make them so prone to gas pain, happy to update here if you're interested

@@BunsBestLife The vet did a general check on them and they are both quite healthy. Our bunnies are a lop boy and a rex girl, the vet said generally lops are more prone to teeth issues and female rabbit's spaying surgery if not done properly could cause some issues with the inner lining (sorry I can't remember the term), but vet checked his teeth are okay and the fact they both had stasis around similar timing means it's more likely the food they ate. The vet confirmed we should keep their diet plain and simple, if they no longer have stasis we can slowly introducing other veggies one by one. The vet also confirms it's okay to give them maloxicam and simothicone when we suspect a stasis. The only scenario they won't work is if there is a blockage, but the bunny would have more severe symptons if they have a blockage, e.g. they'd be literally collapsing, so they need to be taken to the vet anyway. Good luck, I hope you won't have to go through this anymore!

@@megancao9250 So interesting that bit about the spay surgery. I wonder if that could be a potential factor in Bunmi's sensitive tummy. I hope for your sake and your bunnies sake that they don't make you go through that again. You sound like a wonderful bunny parent ☺️

So glad your baby is OK! This is why I think it's so important to have domestic bunnies inside the house with you. They are prey animals and hide their illness. My Lola has reoccurring stasis since 2018. We go through this at the most, 3 or 4 times a month, and when it's good, once every other month. We *always* have Simethicone on hand. That seems to be the most important thing for Lola, since hers it usually due to gas. I'm happy to help any bunny parents who have questions! :)

Thank you so much for sharing your story! Without your efforts to show us those serious gut issues my bunny would have died last weekend due to GI stasis. Thanks to your video I realised quickly that Leo was in trouble and needed help immediately! I found an open vet nearby (it was Saturday night), who gave him the right medication. But his temperature was already low, so it took a couple of days for him to fully recover. Your videos safe bunny lifes!!! (...and they are pretty good :) Greetings from very far away Germany! ♥

Thanks so much about sharing about this! I feel like GI Stasis is every rabbit owners worst nightmare. What kinda of bunny camera do you have? I'm planning to go on a weekend trip and have a friend check on my bunnies, but after seeing how fast Bunmi got sick, I'm thinking that a bunny cam could be super helpful to have.

Gut stasis is a secondary condition - always caused by something else - most commonly improper diet creating imbalanced gut flora, but it can also be caused by stress, dental issues, a fright, dehydration, or other medical events. The treatment is motility and hydration to re-boot the gut. I note on your invoice there were things that did not need to be done - like the xrays and vitamin c & b for example. Your bill should never have been that high and Turbo should have been with her - there was no need to put her in an incubator overnight, as treatment should involve tummy massages to move any stuck poops outward and feeding intermittently. Rabbits recover better when their bonded partner is with them. Rabbits need to eat every 3-4 hours to keep the gut moving. If there was nothing else wrong with Bunmi, the most probable cause was not eating enough or drinking enough water. Rabbits also hide illness so this would've not just happened suddenly. In NZ, vets send the bun home for the owner to administer meds and do the monitoring. It costs about $300 all up. All that is needed is upper & lower gut stimulant, eg: Metochlopramide, Cisapride, Ranitdine, pain relief (Metacam/Meloxicam) and subcutaneous fluids. It is usually the fluid therapy that sorts it. As they cannot control their temperature when on that pain relief, they need to be kept warm. You can syringe feed the medications with Critical Care in conjunction with tummy massages and water until bun is eating on their own and pooping. Never give them anything sugary when they have stasis as it compounds it. I treat my rabbits at home when they get stasis, and only go to a vet to get lactated ringers or if there potentially is a blockage - but you can feel a blockage. I’ve always been able to resolve the stasis within a few hours. I have the required meds on prescription from my vet so it is at home ready. To correct their gut flora, you can feed them what is called a ‘poop milkshake’ - it is cecotrope poops from a healthy bunny made into a puree. Some good plants to get a bunny eating again are plantain (ribwort), pineapple sage, lemon balm, dandelion leaves, fennel, and fresh grass - these all stimulate the gut. I’m glad Bunmi made it, but the treatment was honestly overkill and not quite right.

When Rabbits get stopped up they will eat "Aloe Root" as a laxtive to get going again. Keep some Aloe plants in your house, Rabbits know that aloe helps them. They will only eat the Root if they start to eat Aloe its ok they will only eat a little, it not going to kill them. So if they dig into the aloe root you know they don't fell well.
