Bunk and Old Face Andre The bunk works back on a murder to clear Omar's name.

Фильм және анимация

The bunk works back on a murder to clear Omar's name.
This is a friend of mine, Detective Moreland.
You doing OK there or what?
Listen, for my friend, tell me one more time
how the thing went down.
The boy came in.
He puts the nine on her.
Says to me, ''Whatever you got.''
A nine, huh? Where were you?
Where you see me at.
Nine wouldn't go through this.
- Why did you come out?
- Cos he said to.
- Trying to save her life.
- Right, l'm saying...
This is like Bank of England glass.
Fort Knox glass.
And who put that up there? Huh?
Guy must have had
an elephant gun or some shit.
l don't know. The boy had a mask on.
A mask, huh?
Like Zorro, huh?
- When did that happen?
- A few weeks back.
- Put in a report?
- lt got away from me.
We're going to need you
to come down to the office
and straighten out a couple of things.
l'm running a business here.
l ain't going nowhere.
Give me a bottle of Mylanta. Please.
His whole story is fucked, and here's why -
First, it don't make any sense.
The shooter took out the woman
and left him breathing to talk to you.
He should be dead, too.
Second, that's a drug depot in there.
The glass, reinforced steel,
camera, low inventory.
And, third, he's shining us on
about that big-ass .50-cal hole
because l know who put it there,
and he knows.
And if he were to say,
''Oh, that? That's Omar's previous.
''Ripping off a re-up in here'' -
which is what happened -
he be fucked.
So what? A guy comes in the first time
with a .50 calibre because
he knows the glass is thick,
then comes back
the next week with a nine?
The job isn't about picking
the stories we like best.
Motherfucker. Now you're going to
lecture me about what the job is?
- My apologies.
- OK. Let's go downtown.

What's messed up is Andre would've been screwed no matter what. This was Marlo or Chris's idea of a setup on Omar, but they didn't help make up a good story or even let Andre in on what they were doing until after the shooting. If police had sent in anyone worth their salt from the beginning, Andre would've either been arrested or killed by Marlo for something he didn't do.

I loved this scene and the ones connected to because they show just how much resistance there is inside the department against good police work. Even if you’re right, even if you’re persuasive, even if you’re not Jimmy McNulty, people will still be mad at you when you interfere with the program and start showing how real detective work should be done. Props to Bunk for sticking with it and doing what’s right. He righted a wrong and got Omar to give up killing (at least until he came back from the Caribbeans).

That was exactly my biggest takeaway from the depictions of law enforcement in this show, that the act of doing real police work for the benefit of the community will be shot down at every turn by higher ups to avoid creating more work for themselves, or jeopardizing a possible future political career. Season 2 is the best example of that, where every single homicide detective and police in leadership roles fought tooth and nail against McNulty adding all of the dead women from that shipping crate to the solved/unsolved homicides board. "We do not go out looking for bodies to add to the red (unsolved)" Same thing happened later in the show too when Lester realized that all the vacant houses were being used as places to dispose of a body, and immediately got shot down by Landsman for not only trying to add tons of unidentified murder victims to the board, but for doing it right before an election in a way that could hurt the candidate they were supporting. Still one of the best portrayals of the soul crushing government bureaucracy and corruption I've ever seen on television

@@TheSamLegacy The other principle though is what we'd run into with McNutty and Bunk- natural police when out in the field, working through the logic, finding every minute detail. Those skills ain't the same as what makes a good police captain, cmmdr, major etc. That's more about people managing, logistics, and knowing how to play just enough politics to keep the actual politics away from your people so they can do their thing. McNulty is one of the worst at playing the political game out of any character we ever see in fiction, and Bunk succeeds at politics only by mostly keeping out of it.

I love how you can just see Vern's confidence in his original theory slipping away second by second as Bunk starts to ask questions and point out discrepancies in the story. By the "trying to save her life" line at 00:43, it sounded like he didn't even believe what he was saying anymore. Awesome scene with Bunk obviously, but also I think a really powerful scene for showing Vern's character. He started out pretty much convinced he was right, and was going to finally take Omar down himself over it even if some of the story didn't exactly add up. In a lesser show, his character would have been a hardass in this situation and given Bunk shit for his theory up until the point where he was inevitably humiliated when it was proven wrong, but this isn't a lesser show. So instead his character actually has the decency and humility to not only consider the fact that he may have been wrong, but to actually accompany Bunk to the scene to see for himself if he was wrong. Sure he still holds onto his theory for a little while at first, but by 1:19 you can already tell he knows Bunk is on the right track, and by 1:39 he looks straight up embarrassed with how wrong he actually was. Didn't even question Bunk or try to get a word in afterwards once they left the store, just silently stood there accepting that Bunk was right and he was lied to. Absolutely awesome to see a reaction like that instead of the normal standard "my way or the highway" shit in most average shows dealing with police or criminals.

I remember there was this candy "store" between 3rd and 4th street on Ave B on the LES in NYC. The place had the plexi glass cage with a slot just big enough for money and gem packs to pass through. The only items they sold were those .25 cents colored drinks and potato chips. Never understood how that store stayed open for so long.

The camera looking on the outside is to protect Andre from thieves: that is why Omar uses Reynaldo as a cover to distract Andre from himself entering the shop. The cameras on the inside are a fluke. You can’t certainly have a working camera pointed at a place where people deal drugs. Even Old Face Andre ain’t that stupid.
