Bumblebee: The One Nobody Expected To Be Good

Фильм және анимация

After the Last Knight everyone thought it was over. A prequel wasnt on anybody's mind. Especially one about Bumblebee. Then it came out.
I like the Bumblebee movie. And talking about something good takes less time than talking about something bad.

Charlie is such a genuinely engaging depiction of how grief can rob you of the joys in your life. Charlie isn't quitting diving, struggling with car repairs, and hiding her dad's music collection simply cuz "sad cuz dad ded". These were things she shared with him when he was alive, and now that he's gone, she feels as if she can't do those things anymore, as it would be the final nail in her father's coffin so to speak. Accepting that he's gone, and to her, that feels like a betrayal. Thats why she's so aggressive towards her family who have already moved on, it isn't just angst. She can't let go, which is stopping her from living.

Hailee Steinfeld did so well in this film. This is the first time in a Transformers movie where I was actually invested and understanding of the main character. The team truly did a good job in that regard. It’s too bad PH couldn’t really focus on that. Side note: Best underrated moment was when Charlie got the “Smile” book for her birthday. That book basically represented the pain of holding onto grief while others try to tell you to ignore it or drop it like that’s an easy or healthy thing to do. Plus, that message connects to the microaggression of telling women that they should “smile more” and “stay positive,” which inherently disregards personal feelings and contributes to a culture of objectification. Feels kinda fitting that this would show up in the 80s, when those concepts were still starting to be challenged. Perfect foil to the dreaded Texas statute, and proof that Bumblebee has something meaningful to offer (unlike the Bayverse)

I grew up with the Michael Bay Transformers. Because that was simply my only exposure to the franchise, as I wasn’t even born at the time where I could witness Transformers in the 80s. So to me, I was used to seeing the overly detail look of the robot designs for so long. And I admit, that was the part I found the most epic at times. Especially the animations that go with it. But, I personally loved The Bumblebee movie, despite some others thinking of it as average. Not only that they translated OG designs extremely well that even I recognize characters that I have heard from word of mouth. I was captured by how funny, wholesome and sweet the interactions between the main cast of human characters were, and how they interacted with Bee. But one scene that stuck with me, was one brief bit at the end when Bee has to leave. As he does with the view of Charlie in his rear view mirror, you can see the words on said mirror written something in the lines of “Objects in mirror appear closer than they are”. I wasn’t expecting this movie to be worldwide amazing. But it hits me much more than I expected.

There are so many things I like about Bumblebee is 1) Bumblebee’s inspired maneuver by Jazz from G1 2) The choreography 3) Lack of shaky cam which is so good to see. 4) Creative death given to a good Decepticon Hearing Soundwave’s original voice and seeing all the original character designs with modern special effects-filled me with such nostalgia and joy. I love how Megatron isn't even truly shown in this movie, yet the Decepticon's presence is so strong that this movie didn't need Megatron to make them look like true villains. Shatter and Dropkick were amazing villains, They don't just snarl and growl constantly like demonic werewolves and act in a more human and relatable way. Love how their colors are differen, in bay movies, most of the Decepticons are black and gray. Expect a few. Dropkick is honestly adorable. The little things he says in the movie is just hilarious. The way he goes "huh what are you doing?" and "this is humiliating" when Shatter kneels to the humans. It's so much character. Despite him being a psychopath mass-murderer, it somehow makes him likeable. I love where Bumblebee kills Dropkick. Everytime I watch that, it makes me laugh. Travis Knight uses his knowledge of animation to truly capture the fight scenes with the Robots. Everything is fluent and connected. The Transformers actually use their transformations properly while fighting and do so in a satisfying way. Bumblebee vs Dropkick was a good fight for me. Goes to show that with the right Director, you can actually make something great. Sadly Bay seemed to lose that focus after the first movie. This is what I wanted from a Transformers movie all along. The Autobots and Decepticons actually look like themselves, with no unnecessary explosions and no hot girls. It’s perfect. Even if this movie is not perfect, I still enjoy it. It's sad that many movies I watched were 10-50 years ago. There are still go ones like the Mario movie in my opinion but not many.

@@Harmonmj13 I agree, I enjoy bayverse optimus but more so as his own character. I get the whole concept of a war broken optimus (rotb did that better) but the bay films never had that concept in mind (as there's no official evidence behind the scenes that was an idea bay or any writer thought of) and they just by coincidence had optimus act right in the first film and just stopped caring about accuracy regarding his character as the sequels went onward. It's a personal interpretation that bayverse optimus was war broken but not a legitimate fact or purposeful idea the films wanted to do and even if they wanted to do such a idea, they didn't do it properly. Especially when not a single character bothered to acknowledge optimus's change in behavior or question his anger or logic at points. Meanwhile we get that in rotb and even in fan made bayverse projects. But unfortunately too many bayverse fans tend to forget the words of Peter's brother and the fact you don't commit war crimes if you are the "good guys". Even more ironic alot of bayverse fans are Americans and America is always portrayed as the heroic country in war films yet America committed war crimes in borderline nearly every war it was in.

I was genuinly questioning my entire love for Transformers and had no interest in this Bumblebee spin-off. But when I saw that first teaser trailer, I knew something was different. This had heart. This had emotion. Genuine emotion. Seeing Bumblebee hide in the corner, hiding his face like a scared child and embracing Charlie's hand after being assured safety? That actually made me cry. Cause I never expected to see such emotion in a Transformers movie, especially not after The Last Knight. I love the first Transformers movie and I respect the impact it had on the franchise, but Bumblebee is everything that made people fall in love with the series. Travis Knight’s approach was much more personal and intimate, a welcome addition. i'm pretty sure the filmmakers knew this movie's story wasn't going to be original at all. they probably just needed an old-aged yet effective story to help fill in for a movie representing a heart-felt and fun-loving tale. and if anything, that's how i see bumblebee as: just a plain, simple yet fun and wonderful time. a movie to take away from the convoluted craziness that were all the bayformer films.

I saw this movie in theaters with my brother. We thought we had the whole theater to ourselves because it was completely empty. We were excited because we could both talk about what we don't like or liked about the hot garbage we were about to watch. But when the pre credits started playing, one guy walked into the theater and sat down two rows ahead of us. That was the only way this movie became a let down because I certainly wasn't expecting it to be any good.

Personally, I've never really minded all that much if a movie has a very similar story to another movie. It can bring new and interesting things to the table besides story. Example: "The Last Samurai" and "Avatar" Both good movies, with basically the same story. One of them didn't have any Samurai in it though, and the other didn't have any spaceships or floating mountains. And "Last of the Mohicans" didn't have either of those, I'm pretty sure. So "Bumblebee" might be basically "The Iron Giant" with more '80s references, but I bet one of those movies didn't have any Decepticons in it.

Having grown up with the bay films, part of me is kinda pleased, but also a little confused, that they kept the Bee look from the older movies despite how many others were changed to look closer to their G1 designs. Im guessing maybe since the film was in production when they decided to go G1 ish, they just didn't or couldn't change the design to be closer with the others, or maybe its probably so general audiences could recognize him more easily, even though they would've had a whole film to familiarize themselves with his appearance. Either way im honestly pleased with the design they went with.
