Bulova Precisionist Champlain chronograph

Ойын-сауық

NOTE: The MSRP is higher now than it was when I bought mine, they are now set at $825. The Bulova Precisionist Champlain is a large and bold design with an exceptional movement and stellar fit & finish. They've come a long way in the last 5-7 years.

    I just bought this beautiful piece for $700 and I got to say I am loving it, it looks even better in person. This watch is not as heavy as the reviews I have read on this watch. In fact, it is quite comfortable on my wrist. This watch is well built. My only complaint is that is watch is not Solar. Other than that, I am really loving this watch.

    I have this watch and it is very precise. It is a great watch. Of all my watches though, it does eat batteries the worst. Batteries last in it for about three years before they die and need to be replaced. You can take it to the jeweler to have them do it (Wal Mart won't) and they will charge you about $35 for the $1 battery, plus labor to do it. I guess they see you coming when you have a more-than-normally-expensive watch. A complete jeweler's toolkit and a five pack of batteries will cost you about $25 on Amazon if you are more do-it-yourself inclined. There is a tiny tiny screw that needs to be removed in order to change the battery, so you want to do it over a large, black felt pad, wear reading/magnifying glasses and handle the screw with tweezers so that you don't lose it. Another thing about mine is, there was a sharp burr on the case next to the crown that tore up the top of my hand/wrist until I took a very small, fine file and smoothed it off. It was easy enough to do. It took me a few seconds, didn't leave any evidence, and was better than going through the warranty shenanigans for a watch that was otherwise perfect, but I shouldn't have had to do it in the first place on an $800 wristwatch.

    Great 5-minute review! Thank you. Just ordered your watch earlier this week. (I saw this review only after ordering mine.) Picked it up brand new with tags for USD 449. Plenty reassured by your comments here. It took me all of 10 seconds to fall in love with it, by the way! Love at first sight. I was actually looking for an automatic with sapphire crystal but for me this one was just too persuasive to resist. This is actually a racing watch. Perhaps it needs to be marketed as one. Looking forward to racing with it. Again, Bulova need to up their PR to market this better, because I'm certain not enough folks have seen one, or the Precisionist range for that matter.

    4-1/2 years later in mid-2020. . . I have quite a few Bulova, most of them from their Swiss mechanical "Accutron" line with ETA and Sellita movements, which became AccuSwiss before being discontinued altogether a few years after Citizen bought Bulova. I've got four with the P102.xx movement, two under the Accutron II name and two under the Precisionist name. Bulova also sold them under the UHF label (Ultra High Frequency). Various forums with sections on HAQ, aka High Accuracy Quartz, had much ballyhoo when the Precisionist line was first introduced. They have noted *none* of Bulova's 262 kHz watches live up to the +/-10 second per year accuracy. Much of the speculation has centered on Bulova not using properly aged crystals which drift some as they age. Other than the crystal shape, there is no thermal or other "feedback" compensation in them to provide correction. They're much better than the typical +/-15 seconds per month for a good 32 kHz quartz that's been regulated at the factory before going out the door or the +/-30 seconds per month for the no-name $20 discount department store watches. Mine are in the range of about 15 seconds or so every six months when DST time change flops in and out. My three 196 kHz Seiko 8F32/8F56 Perpetuals are about the same and they have 10 year batteries - with their accuracy improving some with daily wear (also no thermal compensation). Regarding Bulova in general, they're mostly nondescript conservative styles and have been for many years, with these and the former Swiss line having some of the the exceptions. Nevertheless, Bulova as a brand is reliable and durable, even if the overwhelming majority of their offerings are not haute couture. Regarding accuracy, the most accurate in the world remains the Citizen Chronomaster that's sold only in Japan with their A660 movement. It's rated to +/-5 seconds per year, and lives up to that claim. Bring about $2000 to the table to buy one, and that's the discounted price. Then get ready for the import duty when it hits US soil. Lots of stuff gets through without duties imposed. Seiko has its "9Fxxx" movement in its Grand Seiko line. Also only sold in Japan, and bring $2000-$3000 (or more) to the table to buy one; also discounted price. They're rated to +/- 10 seconds per year and live up to it as well. Seiko grows and *ages* its own crystals for these, cherry picks the best of them, and then programs the IC inside the movement to precisely match its crystal. Has internal temperature compensation that measures ambient 540 times per day. Bulova's claim that it's the "most accurate in the world" is bogus. There are more accurate timepieces that live up to their claim - unlike Bulova that had to seriously backpedal when the HAQ crowd on forums took them to task, and started calling and writing to Bulova. That said, if you want better than these, you'll have to pay for it, but don't expect +/-10s per year because you're not going to see it, especially over time as the watch and the crystal inside ages.

    Yet more . . . I have a Precisionist with the same chrono movement inside (16 jewel P123). IMHO it's the best of the three Precisionist chrono types Bulova has made now. There are several different models with it. You can conserve battery energy when not wearing it by putting it into "chrono" mode with the left side pusher when not wearing it. Hours, minutes and date will continue to advance, but they consume a fraction of the energy the central seconds hand consumes. The "tells" that differentiate them from the other two types: (a) 4 "eyes" at 3, 6, 9, and 12 (b) 3rd pusher on left side at the "8" for switching to and from chrono mode, and (c) 1/1000th flyback subdial at the 6. The worst of the three chrono types is the newest one, the CURV, with no central seconds (caliber 8137). Normal seconds subdial ticks in 1-second increments. The seconds counter when you start the chronograph has an abysmal 1/2 second timing precision. Even a mechanical can achieve 1/4 second precision with a central seconds hand. The last one (caliber 8136) only accumulates elapsed time to an hour, with 1/10th second precision, and its movement is a *zero* jewel directly derived from the Miyota 32kHz 6S20. Sadly, their Lunar Pilot homage (aka Apollo 15 Moonwatch) has the 8136 inside it.

    Hello. Thanks for your informative comments on the Precisionist. You know alot about them. I am new. I am thinking about a Marine Star 98B301, or Precisionist 98B315. Not sure because of the mineral glass. You seem not to like the Precisionist that much. Is it because anything better will cost you more? And is it Solar Powered?

  • @Sparks52

    @Sparks52

    3 жыл бұрын

    @@bzeola I'm not as concerned about the mineral glass. Bulova doesn't use sapphire on anything but their more expensive pieces, although I wish they did on these. I'm not banging my watches into things during my normal daily activity. For those occasions in which I'm doing car, home or major appliance repair, or am doing large projects in my woodworking shop, I wear a G-Shock beater. The Marine Star 98B301 has a zero jewel Miyota 6S20 inside and it's an OK basic level chronograph movement with 1/20th second precision. By comparison the 98B315 Precisionist has a Bulova 16 jewel P123 "Precisionist" movement inside with 1/1000th second precision. I'm much more partial to Bulova's 1/1000th second Precisionist chronographs than the (IMHO) overpriced Marine Star. The Champlain style doesn't appeal to me, but if it does to you, go for it. There's a 98B316 with a steel bracelet versus the rubber strap and would suggest that. Put a strap on it if you want after you get it. Straps are *much* cheaper than trying to find a bracelet for it. As an alternative to the large, industrial style of the Champlain, I have a 96B260 with the same P123 Precisioinist chrono movement inside and it's a more conservative, straightforward style, plus it's not quite as large (had a 3-hand Champlain and gave it to my brother). Overall I'm very pleased with my 96B260 and it fits my wrist better than the Champlain did. As a trick, because I've got quite a few watches, I put it into chrono mode using the left side pusher when its stored in the watch box (but *don't* start the chorono running). This stops the normally smooth sweeping central seconds hand, and conserves battery power, moving only the hour and minute hands. When I put it on, I toggle it back into normal timekeeping mode with the same left side pusher. :-) To answer your last question, none of these are solar powered. AFAIK, Bulova doesn't make any solar powered watches (in spite of Citizen's ownership).

    An interesting movement and I like the overall 12h chronograph concept down to 1/1000th second, and a smoothly sweeping seconds hand, which is great for an analog quartz movement. I have some problems with this execution of it. The overall size at 48mm is more than I would generally want, but I know there's a sizable market for huge watches that ooze testosterone and look like tool watches, even if they're not . . . Invicta and Android have sold boat loads of 55mm behemoths. First, the real accuracy of the Precisionist on the street: See the HAQ (High Accuracy Quartz) forum on WUS (Watch U Seek) and search for "Precisionist." You'll find a number of threads about Bulova's Precisionist movements not living up to their +/- 10 second per year or better claim, but performing much worse than that, with some crystal aging effects now emerging that are further reducing their accuracy. There should be a serious caveat NOT to expect a particular example to be much better than about +/- 3 to +/-5 seconds per month, versus +/-10 seconds per year or less. It's most important to note the quartz crystal in Bulova's Precisionist movement(s) is NOT thermally compensated, which is considered a Best Practice Design Requirement for a HAQ movement. The Precisionist is better than many quartz, but not much at this watch's price point (even the going street price). It's very disappointing Bulova would make HAQ claims that are not bearing out on users' wrists. Second, the battery life: You didn't give the battery life on these. I would presume it will be reduced some affected by continued manipulation and use of the chronograph complication, with switching on and off the central seconds hand in timekeeping mode. Again, anecdotal reports on the WUS HAQ forum show the watch getting 2-3 years on a battery, with most toward the 3 year range. I would have expected 5 years at its price point, with the caveat that it will go down some, but not much, with heavy chrono usage. A battery life of 3 years is what I would expect from an entry level men's quartz watch, not a mid-point or upscale quartz. Third, the fake diver case design: At 300m, it's got the requisite air diver depth rating (although I've seen nothing showing the design is ISO tested and certified for it). That's not the problem. It's the fake diver timing bezel, which quite obviously cannot rotate because of its horizontal curvature and the four mondo bolts around it, should never have been put on this watch. It's made even worse by the knurling which gives the impression at first glance from a distance that it can be rotated. Some other hour or minute markings should have been used, which Bulova has done on other watches, NOT dive watch timing marks. Doing so makes it look cheap and cheesy. Be a real dive watch, even if only to 100m recreational depth, or don't be a dive watch, but don't be a fake dive watch, aka a "Desk Diver." I'm really hoping Bulova can come up with something better for the HAQ concept and a 1/1000th second 12h chronograph. The obvious design goals and marketing are in the proper direction, but the execution of them is seriously lacking for the market price.

    @@silverghost4206 I have three Bulova with the "Precisionist" movement inside . . . Bulova changed the lineup names several times between Precisionist, Accutron II and UHF (Ultra High Frequency). One of them is a Precisionist and the other two are Accutron II. I speak from first hand experience regarding their accuracy. I've also got three HAQ Seiko with the 196 Khz 8F32/8F56 Perpetual movements in them. Those run 10 years on a single Lithium cell (provided it's new when you put it in the watch). The Bulova run for about 3 years 3-4 months on a single cell. They have the same class of accuracy as the Bulova. Two were made in 2001 and one in 2003, with Seiko creating their HAQ Perpetuals a decade before Bulova created its Precisionist/Accutron II/UHF line.

    My Precisionist ate up batteries at an alarming rate. !!! CR2016 is a useless battery. I fit CR 2025 and leave out the plate and the microscopic screw. The lifespan of the CR2016 is a year if you are lucky and never use the Stopwatch. Once you change the battery the watch is no longer waterproof unless you pay £130 to have it re sealed every year !!!!
