Bulls @ Blazers, 1998 (Gm 45)

Спорт

MAN this was a fun Blazers team to watch. Sheed/Sabonis/K.Anderson/Rider; these guys could pile it on quick and that's exactly what they did here. Transition scoring, midrange shots and 3PT bombs. Portland hit everything they heaved up, finishing the 1st half shooting 68% (86% after 10 minutes of play).
Even w/ the hot streak, though, Chicago managed to hang around. To begin the second half 'DA BULLS' go on a 15-1 run and never looked back, putting the clamps on Portland defensively.
MJ led all Bulls scorers w/ 29 including timely shots in crunchtime; Pip followed with a strong 18/8/8.

I was at this game. I was 14 years old and sitting in the very last row. My mom spent $150 on the ticket from a scalper. I met the bulls after the game because it was my bday. Never forget shaking MJs hand.

I was at this game as a middle schooler, my aunt took me. I missed the intros so was mad as that was the only time I saw MJ in real life. As a blazers fan, I thought we had it with that big first quarter lead...nope........Jordan is def the GOAT.

Yeah '97-'98 was a tough year for Chicago, with Pippen missing the first 35 games I think (may have been less) recovering from foot surgery. His loss really affected the team, and they struggled early. At one point they were 8-7. I think by the time Pippen came back, they had built a 24-11 record. They finished 62-20.

This team and then on through to the '99 season for Portland, was at the least a serious contender if not the Number ONE - single most stacked and deepest team in NBA history and yet no one even knows about it let alone talks about in the same way the talk of those other great teams from that same ere: like the Jazz, Bulls, or Nicks, or even the Lakers and Hornets were all great teams, had no where near as many good players who had previously proven to be big-time stars at one point, were at that point in time still considered Al-Star caliber, or specifically players who didn't put up big numbers due to such low playing time and then later in the future would go on to big time stars in the league - like Jermaine O'Neal and Bonzi Wells! They had off court problems, but ones that easily could have been delt with and really were hugely over-hyped by the mainstream sports-analysis community like at ESPN, who incessantly were go out of their way to malign their greatness due to them not having one of those "marquies" players who is then also very personable, which with 'Sheed, Rider and then eventually Rod Strickland for his second stint and fionally both Patterson and Bonzi, all were extremely hard people to get along with and notorious for having little i9f no relationship with any sports journalists, (not to mention though - on top of that was the technical fouls that Sheed became infamous for, which were just ridiculous many times, due to his rep he would pick up technical-fouls for almost nothing sometimes, i even saw him once just trun and look at the ref with an animated face which was apparently enough for the ref to T-him-up for). That team was without a doubt on the verge of finally playing and performing at their full potential when that horrific "team-destroyer" GM dismantlement that team faster than it came together - by trading all their best wings and a couple big's for worse big-guys and for super-old guys which made the post 99 and into 2000 was the single worst management of a team's personnel in league history! We traded Walt Williams, Kalven Cato, (and i believe Greg Anthony too), for Pippen for fuck's sake who in his prime wasn't a tenth as good of an all-around scorer as Walt was and though he certainly had better intangibles like his ball-handling and point-forward types kills, but by 99 he had changed his game significantly and was a huge ball-hog when he was at Portland. Walt could have given you 3 or four more really-really good years, (this guy was one of the most underrated great ASF's in the late 90's and man he was the single most important X-Factor for that 98 and 99 Blazer team! but, the worst trade was when we sent Rider and Jimmy Jackson to Atlanta for Steve Smith!!!!!!!!!!!! Steve was another guy way past his prime who also really wasn't that impressive op player in his prime where as Ruider was a far better and most versatile player than smith and his average wasn't staggering at Portland due to all the other big-time scorers they had, but Rider did alot of things great, and was easily the most underrated 2 guard in the league with Sheed being the most underrated PF as well. Sheed was/is one of the most unstoppable PF's in the post I have ever seen, plus he was almost as athletic as Garnett, he had a much better shot and back then after dumping Rider, there was no way in hell that Wallace shouldn't have been the go-to guy in crunch-time - but instead it was always Pippen who was a mere shadow of who he once was yet he was relied upon as the go-to guy as if he still was that guy. God tho Ruder and Jimmy Jackson, who was another extremely underrated wing who played practically identical to Pippen except he had a much better outside and mid-range shot and though he was a couple years removed from an injury that inhibited him from dominating like when he was with the Mav's, but in 99 he was certainly still more athletic than Pippen and plus he was significantly faster and more agile to boot! After that we had one more great and immensely underrated SF in Stacy Augmon who was one of the most impressive athletes i have ever seen, and in his time at Atalanta he had developed a deadly mid-range jumper but his still was more of a slasher while then also then developing an impressive post game as well! But it was his D that made him so integral to that team's success one of the few guys who could contain Kobe from going-off back then while then posting him up at the other end to make the Lakers pay for having Kobe in at the 3. Even though both were extremely slender wings, it was obvious that Stace was significantly stronger though and was also had way more toughness than Kobe and it showed. Not to mention Garry Trent who very simlilar physically-speaking to guys like: - Lamond Murray, Jerome Kersey, Big-Baby, Sullenger, Baas, Jeff Green, Laphonzo Ellis, Corliss wiliamson, Marcus Fizer, Sam Clancy, Romero osby, Joey Graham, Carlos Boozer wayman Tisdale,Antawan Carr, James Johnson, Elton Brand, Tommy Hammonds, Barkley, Ced Cebalos, or say Xavier McDaniel even. Though he was ripped and immovable to say the least -he wasn't just muscle-bound and tough, he back then also had an extremely impressive vert for a guy his size, (which was another trait he shared in common with Shaq- after all being nick-named the Shaq of The MAC as he once with the Magic leaped out of the building for a guy as heavy as he was), plus an okay jump shot on top of it. Now, I really loved Grant back then too, easily the best all around rebounder in the league in my opinion, while being a better defender than Wallace, and also had great post moves with a good mid-range shot - but Rasheed was his better at every one of those skill-sets though, plus he was 6'11" compared to Brian's 6'9", and didn't bring the shot-blocking ability that Wallace also had. As good as he was, he wasn't near as good as Sheed - and honestly, he took away playing time from the likes of Walt Williams, Jimmy Jackson, Stacy Augmon, Garry Trent and so on - and not to mention from Rasheed and Rider who were to two top players those years back then. Sabonis was a god , nothing to say other than that LOL. But, aside from losing Williams, Trent, Jackson, Cato, Rider, Anthony, and then eventually Jermaine O'Neal and Carlos Rogers, for Pippen, Smith, Dale Davis, Shawn Kemp, and eventually Schrempf: one of the main reasons they didn't do as well as they certainly would have in both 99 and then 2000 - was the fact that with all of those scorers with that Rider/Wallace/Sabonis lead 97 through 1999 Blazer teams - were all hugely underutilized when it's all said and done, due to trading away one of the best "true" Point-Guards and distributors in Kenny Anderson while bringing in his place Damon Stoudamer who was far too much of a gunner and ball-hog and really hurt the team as a whole because of this. He just disrupted the flow of things completely, and what pisses me off is that Anderson was still a great scorer too, sure he had an awful outside shot - but just like Augmon - he had developed a deadly deep-two point and mid-ranger jump-shot while also still was quick enough to take it all the way top the whole! The thing is though, he scored without hurting the scorers around him, where as for Damon he scored and shot so damn much to the detriment of his teammates getting into a rythom and scoring as much as they would have with Kenny. That's why Porter and Rod Strickland were both such great PG's because though they both were huge PG's who both at 6'3", were still certainly quick enough to do fine against little guards and tho Rod never had a deadly outside shot, he scored alot the same was Kenny did - in pulling up and hitting mid-range jumopers or going to the hole and then Terry on the other hand was one of the best shooting guards in the league! He was deadly from outside or in, and also with his height allowed him to drive top the hole whenever he wanted. Now, in spite of them both being so good at scoring, both of them though were 100% true-point-guards tho through and through, in that they were distributors first above all else, and would only score to compliment the other big scoers around them - whether it be: Clyde, Kersey, Duckworth, Drazen, Harvey Grant, Cliff Robinson, James Robinson, Buck Williams, Walter Davis, Fatt Lever, Kiki Vanderwehg, Steve Johnson, Racy Murrey, aaron McKey, Sam Bowie, and lastly Mychal Thompson. To this day it pisses the shit out of me theat that moron first broke up the Drex/Duck/Buck/Kers/Porter/Cliff/J-Robinson/Bryant/Ainge team up a full 2 or three years too early - but with being said, that doesn't come close to what they did to the Rider, Jackson, Walt Williams, Kenny Anderson, Brian grant, Sabonis, Rasheed, Stace Augmon, Greg Anthony, Jermaine ONeal, Cato, Trent team up a full three or more years too early!

True. One thing I think they needed is more deferential role players. I've noticed a lot of teams either need that balance or all of the talenr acknowleding one guy as an alpha to run plays they down the stretch. I don't think the 2000 squad had that which is apparent when they went scoreless for stretches in the 4th. That also was an indictment of the coaching too.

This is one of the best comments I've ever read on the 'Tube. Been trying to find it for a while after I originally read it once. Also wanted to add the late 00s TrailBlazers to this very short list as well. Fully healthy they at the very least take away one of Kobe's Finals MVPs, and would still be atop the Western Conference to this very day. Thanks 4 posting

This was on the Bulls annual "Circus Tour". When the Ringling Bros Circus comes to Chicago they tied up the Chicago Stadium/United Center for a few weeks. So the Bulls would do their west coast road sweep. Suns, Nuggets, Clippers, Lakers, Kings, Blazers then Sonics. FWIW: The Nuggets beat this Bulls team at Denver on the same road trip just after a tough game in Phoenix. MJ was so mad at the loss, he had Denver marked on the calendar for when they came to Chicago. Naturally they blew Denver away. As for this particular game, these Blazers were too focused on trying to win the Bulls respect. You have to remember almost all NBA teams were playing the Bulls this way and they knew exactly what to do. Steve Kerr said the start of this season was by far the hardest because they knew it was the last. Took them awhile for the players not named Jordan to find their mojo.

This was the beginning of the end for the nba. Ppl don't even realize it bc the jordan and bulls disguised it. But the crop and style of basketball coming was what led to what u see nowadays. Opposite of 80s bird magic pistons bulls. Unwatchable now. 3 pt contest w refs on court. No d, meaningless stats, players walking all over the place. Not a real sport anymore, just an exhibition league now. Atleast baseball is basically what it's always been, post steroid era, and football too, with tweaks bc of concussion scare. But hoops used to be the most entertaining and dramatic is gone bc the reality of it is gone. They killed the goose. Hopefully when lebron goes away they'll retweak the officiating to make it real again.
