Bulls are grazing our standing hay, right where it was grown on the plant.

Bulls are grazing our standing hay, right where it was grown on the plant. There is a huge savings in wintering animals when they can feed themselves every day on forage standing on your farm. This results in no hay feeding, no fossil fuel used, less labor involved by just rolling up a wire, and last but most important is the animal health is better across your herd.

I was in Ireland for the first time in September, one of the most beautiful things were the sheep and cattle grazing. I thought of you and quietly smiled. And no ugly mega farms like we have so many here in Wisconsin spoiling the views.

I've been stacking and burning to increase pasture for almost five years now. The regrowth is pretty crazy, I guess from the nutrient in the liter on the ground. Those are nice piles, they will burn pretty clean.

Love the story about "Hay Insurance" at the end of the video Greg! I could not agree with you more. Had a similar thing happen to me and I made the same promise to myself "NEVER AGAIN." Nowadays all my round bales are placed on pallets in the field where they will be fed no later than October. I have applied many words of wisdom from your lectures and pasture videos in my very small goat operation. Thanks for the great info over the years and always looking forward to new videos!!! Got a video on the channel of this years winter feeding setup if you want to see it for yourself. Constructive criticism is always welcome!

I had the same thing happen to me, only it was my horses who were in danger. "Scattered showers" on Saturday ended up turning into 18" of snow on Sunday. I'd just moved into the area and didn't realize this could happen. I didn't want to get hay while it was raining on Saturday and planned on getting it Sunday after church. I woke up to several inches of snow on Sunday and only had enough hay left for a light breakfast feeding since I'd planned on getting the hay later in the morning. By the time church let out, there was more snow on the ground and I could barely get back onto my property with the hay. That taught me a lesson I never forgot and I made sure to have an emergency winter supply of hay by late October/beginning November every year after that.

Merry Christmas to you all too! Thanks for the video! I was walking in the pasture last night and I saw tons of earthworms. We got that slow soaking rain the other day so all the earthworms are coming above the ground. I know we have grass greening up and growing very slowly here too. After Christmas, it is going to get colder but it will be freezing at night and above freezing during the day. I sure like we are past the winter solstice. Looking forward to longer daylight and shorter nights.

Great video but I think Greg conflates protein with energy. Bermuda stockpile, if you have enough of it, should have plenty of cattle available energy but may not have enough protein to digest it. Of course, if analysis shows your Bermuda is on the high end, 8% protein say, that's enough for bulls and open cows. Third trimester or lactating cows will need supplementation but stockpiling would still be a winning strategy.

I don't believe there is ever a "stupid question." That's what I was taught fifty years ago in college and it made all of us students braver to ask "stupid" questions. I have been feeding my horses pure Bermuda hay for two year because a year ago there was no grass hay available. Did you hear Greg say that if you are pasturing your cattle on Bermuda and I think he mentioned one other type of grass you will probably be low in protein and energy and a protein supplement is probably needed. How fortunate that Greg is always teaching and we can catch these pearls of wisdom that we didn't even know we didn't know. I thought I was feeding a better hay than plain old fescue.

Merry Christmas Greg. Thaks for your interesting lessons. I'm from Argentina, country were I worked in a huge dairy farm (2000 milking cows) and the operation was supported on grazing, especially alfalfa. I agree 100% with you about the cow can harvest their food, it's very cheap and efficient. 3 months ago I moved to Alberta, Canada with my family as a student in a College of agriculture and I'm passionate from Beef operations and I have to learning a lot (including language), however, your videos teach me a lot. I have a question about what do you do in snowing season. What is the main forage that cows eating. Congratulations for your determination in your operation and for the quality of information you share. Greetings. Bairon

We have 2 “ of rain coming today. A Christmas gift for my acreage and pond! The El Niño closing out two summers of horrendous drought here in eastern Kansas, or at least my part of it. An article I read way over 20 years ago in Barton’s Magazine described El Niño described them as not in isolation but as proceeded by two years of drought s in other parts of the world before the event. This last three weeks are looking like the turnaround. Merry Christmas to all you out there.

It's sad people look up to all these idiots driving lambos and not people like Greg that could actually change the world for the better. It doesn't matter how much money you have when biology itself is dying and everyone's being poisoned. At some point people have got to frickn realize this stuff is serious and we need more farmers like this. The only environmentalists are see are lunatics who want to tax carbon. We are the %1 who can see reality and have cared long enough to figure out real solutions. Stay strong you're all great humans.

People like Mr. Judy don't own the fantasy industrial complex that tells our children what to want. The real lunatics are those who think oil will go on forever. We ran out of oil before when we used whale oil and had killed almost all the whales. I bet there were fools back then yelling " hunt baby hunt", but with no whales to catch, that was just childish and silly.

No, we do not worm our livestock. By not worming, we have allowed out animals to build up natural resistance against parasites. The worst part about worming animals is that you destroy your biology on your farm by poisoning all the manure piles. Don’t do that 😊
