History is history and that is that , to make money from it is ludicrous and wrong. It is a great thing to learn and not repeat the bad and improve on the good. If they don't like it and want to make money and rewrite it, that is not history that is capitalizing off it for profit and that is wrong.

Seriously, why hang a million dollar picture that any loon could damage with paint or a sharp object when instead you can hang a reproduction of said painting with no stress? Heck, if I owned a museum with expensive stock, I would use repros.

Anyone who knows anything about Military vehicle restoration (especially Armour) knows that getting parts for 80 plus year old vehicles is extremely difficult, that is why we need to repair or more commonly replace components with remanufactured items, important thing is at the end of the day we are preserving military history for future generations

The Tiger 1 of Vimoutiers (Normandy, France) has been expertised. The tiger of Vimoutiers has been appraised for a complete restoration (it is empty since 70's) We need 1 million euros to restore it in a cosmetic way. It would take 10 millions to put it back in working order. So yes it is always a question of money !

I've been to some museums in America that had mannequins wearing uniforms that were worn by soldiers who fought in the American Civil War. None of the uniforms were original but were reproductions of those worn by those who fought for the Union Army as well as those who fought for the Confederate Army. I wasn't disappointed because they showed what soldiers of both sides wore as well as how they were equipped. In my city of Evansville, Indiana during WW2 there was a factory here that built the P-47 Thunderbolt fighter. The city had bought the remains of a P-47 that had crash landed in a lake in Florida. It needed a lot of work to restore it to be a display only plane at a museum and volunteers worked at making new parts and control surfaces and pieces from scratch. Were people disappointed that almost half the plane would be made from new handmade parts for display? Not in the slightest because it would have been something for people to see up close what kind of plane was built in our city during WW2. So until the purists come up with a complete original tank or plane or whatever on their own then they can go and piss up a rope.

The issue here is anger. Not righteous anger, such as the man had who gathered parts and rebuilt the Tiger known as the FrankenTiger. Germany decided to outlaw private ownership of military relics which in my opinion makes for a morally poorer nation. Hence, the man sold it to a private collector in the United States. But we in the the West are losing our minds to anger, which is really bad because whatever politics or hobby, or interest we have, is only about 1% of who we are as humans and anger turns it into at least 80% of who we become and NOBODY likes running into a person like that. So, if we can all be civil and more importantly, polite in discussions then we can hope for more than just telling someone to get screwed because of his opinion or position. Sadly it take so much effort to change things. What would a person have to do to get the German law about confiscating something like a Tiger tank you have worked for ages to repair? And those who think FrankenTiger is a one off that never happened, think again. Lots of German tanks that we destroyed had their useful parts removed in order to repair other tanks and have one that runs properly and functions like it should. So the FrankenTiger is nothing more than a repaired Tiger that was repaired long after the others were. By the way, the oldest surviving Tiger is the one in the Fort Benning Army museum. It was captured before in North Africa that is in Bovington. And what had been discovered by people who had hands on experience in studying and preserving that Tiger discovered early on is that this Tiger has a turret that did not come from the factory attached to the hull it is riding on. hmm. FrankenTiger?

  • @PanzerPicture

Thanks for the comment, I think that a lot of these grazies are also jealous, but the Frankentiger was actually not sold because of some law, which I don't even think is true, the Hoebig collection restored many tanks and sold many tanks, the Frankentiger was sold to fund the restoration of a second Tiger which is a drivable one.

As 3 D printers capable of working with metals get more and more advanced the ability to cost effectively reproduce parts to get old tanks and airplanes in running condition will greatly decrease. This is a good thing and it beats hunting around the world for 80+ year old parts that weren't part of the original vehicle anyway.

Great video and I share your sentiments. I would rather see a put together "franken tank" that runs than just leave the scraps buried in the ground. Also, a pet peeve of mine is all the complaints directed at museums that do not make the preserved artifacts (tanks - like in the US Armor and Calvary Museum) running, because they want to carefully conserve said artifacts for future generations. It seems now days, no one can be safe from the armchair trolls in their mother's basements (likely b/c of all the WW2 tank war games).

I think repro pieces in museums should be like announced, i mean like if an original piece and a repro item are displayed together on a mannequin i think it's okay if they don't lie and say it's original, for restored vehicles... I guess it's okay to put different engines in the vehicle, i myself if i would have a vehicle project and parts are hard to come by and i really have no other choice i'd take the most similar alternative, if it would be the engine i'd try to put a modern engine with the same power and a similar sound so it does not go unnoticed, if someone would ask about it i would not lie that it's a new engine and not it's original engine... Better see something or see something run than see nothing because unavaible parts...

I think that a lot of repro, should be represented as just a representation of what a uniform of that time looked like, they do this for mid evil period armour and uniforms, but for WW2 not. I think if they tel the history for genuine items and just leave the repro for the representation part.
