Biography of Bulleh Shah in English language: Syed Abdullah Shah Qadri (1680-1757) famously known as BullehShah was the great Punjabi Sufi (mystic) poet, humanist and philosopher. He was born in Uch Sharif (District Bahawalpur) in 1680. His ancestors had migrated from Uzbekistan.
When he was six months old, his parents shifted to Malakwal, where his father, Shah Muhammad Darwaish, was a teacher and preacher in the village mosque. His father later got a job in Pandoke, about 50 miles from Kasur. Bulleh Shah received his early schooling in Pandoke, and moved to Kasur for higher education. He also received education from eminent teachers Maulana Mohiyuddin and Hazrat Ghulam Murtaza.
After his education, he went to Lahore and became disciple of Shah Inayat Qadri, an esteemed Sufi saint of his time who belonged to Arain tribe.
Baba Bulleh Shah spent most of his life in Kasur. He was a humble person by nature and led a pretty simple life.
Bulleh Shah followed the tradition of Sufi Punjabi poetry initiated by famous poets like Shah Hussain, Sultan Bahu and Shah Sharaf. The verse form Bulleh Shah primarily employed is called the Kafi, a style of Punjabi, Sindhi and Siraiki poetry used not only by the Sufis of Sindh and Punjab, but also by Sikh gurus.
Bulleh Shah’s poetry and philosophy strongly criticizes Islamic religious orthodoxy of his day. His poetry emphasized love and peace and he constantly advises to get away from the worldly comforts and luxuries. He gives message for the love to humanity. He explains the ephemerality of life. He strongly condemned the class differentiation and social and religious injustice prevalent in the society. Through his poetry he advocated for a need to get rid of the oppression of poor.
He died in 1757 at the age of 77 and was buried in Kasur. Because of his liberal poetry, he was declared Kafir (infidel) by some illiterate extremist Mullahs of Kasur and they advised people not to offer the funeral prayer of Bulleh Shah due to the allegation of Kufr. However, the Janaza (funeral prayer) of Baba Bulleh Shah was led by Qazi Hafiz Syed Zahid Hamdani, a leading religious person of Kasur.
Due to his personal conduct, strong character, and his love for humanity, he is popular among Hindus, Muslims, Sikhs, Hindus and people of different faiths. They all equally love him and like his poetry.
