Bull breeding experts on Bull Framing Tips - KAGRC |part 1|

The Kenya Animal Genetic Resources Centre is located on a 200-acre piece of land in Nairobi’s lower Kabete area.
Started in 1946 by the Kenya Government, the centre produces and distributes bull semen for use by the country’s livestock farmers.
With time, the centre’s mandate has grown to include providing artificial insemination (AI) training to farmers and supplying equipment for AI services in the country.
The price for the semen varies from one bull to another depending on market demand for the said bull and the distance your inseminator or agent will cover to make delivery.

Kenya has had a very small pool of exotic milk producing breeds which have not been genotipic and phenotypic advanced for a long time.we keep rotating the same genetic pool. Your organization should invest in type/progeny testing and introduce Multifaceted approaches to gene introduction to Kenyan population ie production vs phenotypic vs management traits. We can't continue with all rounder bull selection UT will not serve specific functions ie production (butterfat content /casein content etc), phenotype (colour coat/muzzle, backline, chest, pins, hock, feet scores), management (calving ease, teat placement, mammary capillary distribution, somatic cell scores, temparament, mothering skills, heat and disease tolerance etc) Further research should be done on cross breeding potential withing the bos vs indicus breeds to exploit underlying hybrid vigour. Introducing fleckvieh, brown Swiss and other smaller but adaptable breeds into our genetic pool for milk production will go a long way in boosting purpose specific milk products in Kenya

Try brown Swiss if you are a cattle keeper.... It's dual purpose, high milk production (Canadian and American type) and gives very good hybrid vigour
