Bulgarian AK Mags- good or bad choice?

This is an overview of the only Bulgarian 30 round AK magazine in my collection. Would not lock into the mag well initially. After scraping and removing some material it locks in but will not come out without repeated bumps to the bottom of the mag. This was purchased as new surplus from Gun Mag Warehouse as item BULAK30MTRY. This could be due to self- cleaning follower and steel feed lips out of spec or the size of the rear steel lug (not sure) as I have read people who purchased this magazine had no fitment issues with M70 and other American machined AK magazine wells. Magazine has "CAl.7.62X39" identifying Caliber 7.62 x 39mm. Fired 30 rounds through this magazine with one failure to eject causing mis-feed and a round not going into battery.

Yeah, you are right. The older mags stated "Cal" and that was changed to "CAL" but this mag had "CAl" so I did not get that one right. Thanks for your feedback-Doug.

I've had the same problem with my Zastava with the Bulgarian polymer mags. But a little filing on the upper area of the hind lug will get the mag to fit. The steel Bulgarian mags and all others work well.

I have 8 of these magazines, and they fit perfectly in my Arsenal, and WASR 10. I haven’t tried them in my Zastava m70 yet cuz it’s at a different location. I also have several of the metal Bulgarian mags with the polymer follower, and they have fit in all 3 of my rifles.

Good to hear that info. Who knows, maybe my magwell is to blame. I have seen some other videos and comments about M70 and fitment-some fit some don't. Appreciate your feedback. That is helpful-Doug

UPDATE-using a Dremel tool over the weekend, I took off some of the bottom portion of the front steel lug. It's still doesn't come out without some effort. I'll keep at it, but for now, no quick mag changes. These are on sale for half off on the web today when I checked them out.

I have a PSA AK103 clone and have a bunch of magazines from surplus to brand new. I have 4 Bulgarian mags 2 polymer and 2 steel no issues at all. Although one of the polymer mags was a bit hard to get out. Over time it just worked itself out :) nice rifle btw man

Thanks for the feedback @vincentsilva5663. Never heard anything bad about the Bulgarian mags before. That was the reason for purchase. Who knows maybe the mag well on my M70 is cut too small and that is why it doesn't fit. I took a Dremel sander to the back lug and front lug and seems good now. I appreciate you for watching the video. Thanks-Doug

Texas Weapons Systems Hob Knob Enhanced Charging Handle. Mine came off while I was chambering a round. Stayed on for 400 rounds, though. Have not put it back on yet. I will get it back on this week. The charging handle on the Zastava is a bit longer than other rifles so may stay on other makes better. I have a KZread shorts video on my site on it. Appreciate the comments-thanks - Doug

Texas Weapon Systems Hob Knob charging handle. It stayed on for 400 rounds. It actually came off while charging the rifle during the video. I was looking for a Zenitco charging handle and the TWS seemed like a good fit. I like it. Appreciate the comments-Doug.

super simple fix, just take a file, and file a little bit off of the surface of the rear lug on the magazine that makes contact with the mag release button, it should work. I have had the same issue with new mags from different countries and its always been the issue. super easy to remedy:)

It's a US PALM AK30 mag. I got it from The Gun Mag Warehouse. I got some Chiquita Banana stickers on it now. I have a video that I may get out there. Looks like it has steal lugs, but it does not, and no reinforced feed lips. It's solid though and everyone needs a banana mag for an AK. Thanks for the comments-Doug.

Buying polymer??…… invest in a dremel… especially if you like buying a lot of different kinds….. 2 seconds hitting the front and back lugs where you see the obvious wear will work wonders.👍
