Bulgarian goalie wore a wig during the tournament. That was something new on the pitch, and might be distracting for the opponents.

Трифон легенда, а и цео овај тим Бугарске. Цела Србија је навијала за Бугарску. Да није била она крађа за пенал против Италије у полуфиналу, можда би и освојили. Јужноамериканци никад нису добро пролазили против Балканаца

Wrong - Romario was the superstar on the field, Cruyff off the field; M. Laudrup + Stoichkov were the 2nd ranking stars on the field, then came R. Koeman in the 3rd position on the field!

I was 10, first time I really took notice of football. My mum & grandparents are Irish so I was so excited when they played Italy. We eventually sat down to watch the final with Italy and Brazil, the TV stations scrambled and we couldn't watch it. We were gutted

Greetings! I was 12 and was obsessed with football! By the way, we remember the great polish teams of the past as well! before my time but I read about them and have seen highlights. 70s and 80s Poland was very strong. Boniek was one of the best players in the world!

In my opinion, West Germany beating Hungary in 1954 is the only World Cup upset that I would put ahead of this one. But other than that, this feat that Bulgaria pulled off in 1994 is simply astounding! 👍🏽 🇧🇬 P.S. Stoichkov was a beast.

A historian of the game! Great reference to both classic games! People forget that Bulgarians showed up to the mundial in ‘94 not having won a game at the World Cup in their *entire history*. Got thrashed by Nigeria 3-0 in the opening game. Then caught on fire until the semis.

And yes, very true how Nigeria beat Bulgaria 3-0 in the opening game, yet Bulgaria pulled off wins against Greece and Argentina afterwards in order to finish in second place in their group. Eventually reaching the semis, like you mentioned. It was a great tournament for Bulgaria! 🇧🇬

Был ребёнком, болел за Болгарию и Румынию на этом мундиале. Румыны со шведами такой матчище закатили, просто труба. Ну и конечно, от болгар все офигевали в те дни
Досехпор эта матч даёт мне радост. Как лечков засадил немцам. Лучше игрок балгарий для меня эта лечков брав парен. Дагестан анжи Махачкала. Дикий дивизия.

VERDADE absoluta isso daí amigo, o timaço da Bulgária era de outro planeta, e com o Hristo Stoichkov como principal mente da equipe tornava a seleção búlgara numa grata surpresa para os nossos olhos. O gol dele de falta me lembrou o que ele havia feito quase dois anos antes no mundial de clubes de 92 diante o São Paulo de Telê Santana!

Классный матч. Один из лучших на том чемпионате. Очень хороший состав был у сборной Болгарии. Стоичков, который был тогда в числе лучших игроков мира. Костадинов, Балаков, Лечков, ставший для меня открытием, и другие. С тех пор, к сожалению, сборная Болгарии как-то особо не блещет.

Also, it must be noted that during his times in action. Jurgen Klinsman was a formidably dangerous attacker in the midfield and forward for Germany and at Club level. He was a consistent goal hunter whom goalkeepers dreaded and opponent defenders feared.

Ach ist das lange her... Schade das Bulgarien nicht mehr so stark ist. Da hätte sogar gegen Italien im Halbfinale mehr drin gewesen sein können, wäre man konzentriert geblieben und hätte man sich von seinem bisherigen guten abschneiden bei dieser WM nicht ablenken lassen.💪 Wundert mich etwas, da nach dieser WM fasst nur noch Kroatien als einzige Balkanmannschaft bei den folgenden Weltmeisterschaften konstant gut war. War vielleicht ein One-Hit-Wonder🤷♂️ Naja kann ja vielleicht noch werden...

The Bulgarian team definitely got overconfident. They’d just beaten the last two World Cup winners! And Italy had looked very beatable until that semifinal. Italy played their best half of the tournament in the first half. The Bulgarians turned it on in the second half but it was too late. There should have been a penalty whistled against Italy in the second half they would have tied the game. But those types of calls don’t go against a giant like Italy when there are medals at stake. Unfortunate but true.
Tough game.Both team played well.
I got to see this team as a teenager against Argentina and let me tell you that was an awsome game with soo much talent on one field without Maradona.

Los nombres eran lo más raro de los rumanos, al mismo tiempo tenían nombres latinos (Adrián, Daniel), nombres anglosajones (Gheorge) y nombres rumanos (?) (Ilie, Florin)... Los apellidos búlgaros terminaban casi todos en ov o ev
If it wasn't the French referee Quiniou at semi-final (gutted because Bulgaria kicked out France off the World Cup Qualifications), who knows...... Bulgaria could've beat Brazil in the final. I remember Brazil didn't play very well vs Italy and needed penalties to win. Both Brazil and Italy looked very tired at that final match. But Bulgarian players would've forget about fatigue and "eaten the grass" and fight like a Lion vs Lion. You never know what could've happen, we can only guess. Of course - FIFA arranged the "better" final match - Brazil vs Italy, the two countries each had won 3 world cups by that time. This match may look more intriguing, yes, who will win 4th title, but Bulgaria vs Brazil could've be the ultimate game for a small country that gave everything to reach the semi-finals. And could've make even people who don't watch Football - to watch that match. That golden Bulgarian generation deserved the chance of their life. But FIFA played very nasty placing a French referee, that's how they roll.

The fact that Mexico took this Bulgarian team to PK’s in the round of 16 actually shows how good that Mexican team was.

Good team, yes. Campos was a good goalie and they played possession football well. But they were gifted a phantom penalty and the Bulgarians played with 10 men (ridiculous red card to the Bulgarian fullback) for an hour. And the Bulgarian team was already playing without their starting fullback, center back and defensive midfielder. They had a winger playing center back (he happened to provide a great assist for Stoichkov’s goal). The full match is on KZread, although it’s with Bulgarian commentary. I re-watched it recently, had forgotten about the horrible refereeing.

@@SKa-tt9nm Mexico also had a red card but I will definitely rewatch the game…..it’s a classic

@@SKa-tt9nm the 1st half was superb. Fantastic football from both teams. Stoichkov midfield general. But the referee completely ruined the game in the 2nd half giving a string of free kicks and yellow cards for non-existent fouls.
