Two of Bulgaria’s most famous sites, the Rila Mountains and the Rila Monastery, lie south of the capital city, Sofia. We signed up for a tour that took us to both of the sites to see the beauty Bulgaria has to offer.
After an hour and a half drive south and a twenty-minute ski lift, we were at the foot of the hiking trail that would take us up into the Rila mountains and take our breath away, both from the beauty and the lower levels of oxygen at 2500m (8200ft).
There are seven lakes to spot along the trails, as well as streams to cross. You can even fill up your water bottle with crystal-clear mountain water on your way up. The hike is strenuous and takes a few hours, but the view from our picnic spot was totally worth the effort.
As we made our way down the mountain, always the most fun part of any hike, we met a fox! Reminder: Don't feed wild animals!
Rila Monastery is another hour and a half drive from the foot of the ski lift. After the hike up and down the mountain, we were all exhausted and napped most of the way there.
We woke up at the entrance of the Rila Monastery to a surprise announcement: there is a special donut shop behind the monastery, and they sell out fast. We scurried past the monastery to get to the donut shop before the last call. The monastery has been there since the 10th century, it wasn’t going anywhere.
We returned to the monastery to tour the centuries-old church. Filming inside is forbidden, but the intricately detailed frescoes that decorate the outside walls give you a good idea of what the interior looks like. Entrance to the monastery is free. The donuts are 3 Lev.
