They indeed use a real climbing rope and real harness. If you look closely on 23:19 you can see a nylon rope on Jamie's harness. It's just covered in duct tape. And the harness is a sport climbing harness covered as well. I'm glad they used that kind of protection but they could just tell the viewers that they have a back up just in case.

I'm pretty sure the belay rope was real but they did actually use the duct tape rope. just if something went horribly wrong they did have the nylon. But yeah the whole episode played out more like a parody of a survival show than a mythbusters episode

I would not be surprised if they made those ropes at the shop where they could check the strength and or the one connected to the harness is a proper rope. Other options would have being professionals going down with the gear that they have but an emergency breakaway rope (one that has a bit extra slack so it does not take weight until the person starts falling) and a non-zero chance that they switched at least the safety rope out to reduce possible wear issues

What they used is duct/duck tape, you are talking about foil tape but the original was duck cloth with adhesive backing used in WWII to seal ammo cases and that is what they used here. Despite your objection it 100% is known as duct tape and is what 99% of people think of as duct tape.

@@jongrey1916 It's not what was written on the order forms when I re-ordered stock as a sales manager at a hardware store for 3 and a half years (I left 10 years ago to become a truck driver)... Duct tape was only made of aluminium, according to the specs! Cloth tapes were exactly that, Cloth! (what we see here) And it tears easily in a straight line vertically or horizontally; BUT, you would never apply cloth tape to aluminium ducting, that is why there's "duct tape"... 2 completely different products! Cloth tapes come in multiple colors! Red, black blue white grey green etc etc.. Duct tape only comes in one color, silver, as it is made from aluminium and you will never be able to tear duct tape in a straight line free-hand like you can with cloth tape! There is a HUGE difference!... But hey, I'm the ex sales manager of a big hardware store with 25 years experience in the trade on site prior to that job; what would I know, right?! 😁 PS:..oh but wait, the specifics were on the order forms online saying exactly what each was and it's purposes😱I guess our suppliers hired the wrong people to do that too😂 PSS: btw it's "duct", not "duck" lmao🤣😉
